I seem to remember when Rees was a freshman and struggling with reads CBK would have cards held up to help him while making it a little quicker for him.
Am I misremembering and that's why He's not doing it with Golson?

Not sure if it will be with the cards but I think we'll see improvement this week. Kelly acknowledge that during the press conference. I know it's the nature of our offense and changing the play at line is necessary. But there were times yesterday, that we looked disorganized and confused.

I get that I was just wondering if when he was doing it with Tommy other teams started to figure it out.

From the looks of it he let golsen make the reads in the first half. My guess was he didn't foresee the problem and probably didn't have the cards ready. I expect to see the next game. Pure speculation but that is my guess.

Honestly, I don't think Kelly had much game planning at all (which he hinted too during the presser).

Purdue has a new D coordinator with essentially no film for years.

I think Kelly and Co were essentially winging it yesterday, but they got the job done.

I disagree completely.

This coaching staff doesn't "wing it" on anything

Kelly said himself that he had to watch film from 2008 to know what to even kind of expect.

They still game planned, don't get me wrong, but they were adapting on the fly for a lot of situations. (which Kelly also mentioned).

The one thing they knew coming into the game is that the defense would be loading the box (zach martin said after the game they planned for that).

So, by winging it, I meant adapting on the fly... And that was pretty apparent to me.

Well there is a big difference between "winging it" and making adjustments due to strategy.

Just a misunderstanding. Carry on.

To me, there is no Golson vs. Rees question. It's a Golson plus Rees answer. Kelly wanted to win the game. Given Golson's high potential and Rees' coolness under pressure, Kelly made the right calls by going with Golson as long as possible and turning to Rees when the pressure was on.

I think if Golson was healthy for that last drive, then he would of been playing.

Wasn't really looking at Golson vs Rees but more on how Kelly is with Golson as a young QB vs Rees as a young QB.
Not team Golson or team Rees I'm team winning.

Golson will start at MSU and probably for the rest of the year. However, B Kelly isn't going to miss an opportunity to win a game on Golson's emotions.

I remember that as well and it kind of stuck out to me... Gives me a little hope that the team simply wasnt prepared for the Purdue to the extent the staff is use to. They wont have that same problem with Michigan State. We will see though. I do think it is note worthy that they had to look at tape from 2008.

If I remember correctly, I believe the card system is actually more complicated. It gives the QB several options and is one more thing the QB has to decipher.

Golson has enough issues trying to get a play called with simple hand signals and vanilla reads. He really needs to start improving in this aspect of his game. Kelly's offense is all about tempo, and when the QB is taking the entire play clock to call a play, it kills us. I think he will improve at this, but i'm not sure we will see the cards again until he can start getting the simple plays called first.

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster. I love this board, by far the best that I frequent.

Just wanted to chime in on something Kelly said in the post-game because I haven't seen it mentioned yet: Did anybody notice the refs standing over the ball prior to plays when ND was on offense in the second half? Kelly commented on it, because apparently it was allowing Purdue time to make additional substitutions, and this supposedly is why it was taking soooo long to get plays in. Martin couldn't call a play until he could see what he was up against personel-wise, and by the time he could see what Purdue was in the plan clock was winding down. Kelly said he complained to the officials about it in-game, and that he would be talking to somebody about it this week (Big Ten?).

Anybody else hear this? Can anybody else elaborate on it? I was at the game and did not notice it......thanks!

Good catch!

I never really paid attention to that, but if it's true, then it certainly could attribute to the play calling delay.

Good first post, post more often Coach.

They said during the game that we substituted after the play so they did that so that Purdue could also do it.

I definitely noticed this, and I definitely noticed BK arguing with the refs about it. It was on a play down on our own 20 or so where we had to burn a timeout because we couldn't get the play in in time. At the time I thought that they hadn't reset the play clock or something because the ref was standing over the ball like he was waiting to do the old blow the whistle and wave the arm to start the clock move, but when he finally backed away there was very little time left on the play clock. I thought for sure they would say the play clock wasn't reset and that we wouldn't be charged with a timeout. Definitely seems like something that should be taken care of.

Like Polish said.. It was only when we made a late substitution on O that the refs gave Purdue extra time to sub.. I have no idea if that is a rule and don't have time right now to look it up.

I dont think Golson needs the deal-a-meal cards to get the plays...I think mayock was right (again) in that Golson doesnt want to turn the ball over so much so that it is effecting his play making ability. Golson had Eifert alone for 'jumpball' td at least twice and didnt even pull the trigger. he is hesitate in the pocket, hesitate because he is cautious. not because he isnt processing the offense. i think that is expected from a redshirt freshman starting his first home game. you see once the heat goes up, he has escapability, when he is reacting and not so know much thinking.....he needs more time to develope, and I think he can only get it by getting playing time.

its like the first time you jump off a diving board, you stand at the end of it, not sure whats gonna happen. then when you finally doing jump off, you become comfortable with it, and pretty soon your doing flips and stuff off it.

Golson just needs to get that first initial jump off the diving board out of the way and starting hitting Eifert

We will see more of what we saw in the 2nd half and that is BK essentially making the adjustments. If you look around the NCAA, it happens a little more often then I think some realize and I am okay with that.

EG is still a red-shirt freshman getting into his 2nd game action and 1st game against a defense that is better then Navy. The DT is 1st round talent.

Against MSU, I expect BK to be more involved with the adjustments.

From what I've heard/read, apparently the rule allows the defense time to make substitutions if the offense makes substitutions. The refs are supposed to allow some sort of time for the defense to make their substitutions, but it seems that BK feels that the refs were allowing too much time for the defensive substitutions to occur. Given the way that our offensive play calls come in (line up, see what look the D is giving and adjust) this was a big hindrance to running the offense smoothly/efficiently.

I wasn't that aware of the issue during most of the game so I wasn't paying much attention to the issue for the most part, but at one point I did think it was odd that the ref was still standing over the ball with barely 10 something seconds left on the play clock. I think that's when ND had to call a timeout and BK ran onto the field to give the refs some ish...as he should have.

This went on the entire game. Purdue was ready to snap the ball with 25 seconds on the play clock consistently. ND was lucky to have 15 seconds after the ref let the ball go. The one time the ref started the play clock backed off 15 yards and then when he noticed ND had an uncovered receiver on the outside ran up and put his foot on the ball. By the time he released the ball the receiver was manned and there were 4 seconds left on the play clock. ND had to burn their last time out and Kelly had every right to be mad.

They did use cards at times during the game.

I did't see the big graphics of the past but did see a Red Army guy holding a text sign about a foot tall and two feet wide.

Another element is the variety of formations and the personnel packages. The QB, a rookie, has to ensure everybody is in the right place each play, pre-snap. This isn't Holtz's Triple Option.

Somebody in the Gameday thread pointed out that ND used 17 different players on the first TD drive. Multiple players increase the opportunity for error exponentially. Zach Martin probably knows through repetition who the LG is goin to pick up but does he and the 3rd string tight end think with like minds? Golson is still learning his job but he has to make sure that when he calls an audible he has the right personnel on the field and the line up properly. All this while the clock is ticking down.

love or hate tommy...that dude is a cool customer

I can't think of many quarterbacks who can't be considered cool customer?? And to me, it's not so much that Rees is a cool customer but someone who has realized that he isn't tall, isn't fast, and doesn't have a good arm and needs to make quicker decisions and throws.

Rees didn't look like too much of a cool customer when he was panicking at the line of scrimmage on that 3rd down play trying to call a timeout and letting the play clock expire and just heaved it up in the direction of John Goodman.

If Goodman doesn't make a great play there or if the ref made the correct call (delay of game) then Kelly and Rees would be hearing it all week.

And our offensive line did step it up tremendously on that final drive because they knew if Rees got sacked it would not only kill any chance of a drive but also the risk of a fumble from him.

Sometimes that is Golson's problem. looking too much at Eifert with other recievers wide open.
