Keenan is ok, but it is not the center of the universe like alumni hall on the south quad. Go dawgs.

Alumni Hall will wake their dead, we will sing her requiem.

Father George rules.

SDH is the best, just don't try to get more than one piece of fruit out the door.

Jason's comment reminds me that I forgot to add a positive point about NDH to my initial list. While (IMO at least) South Dining Hall is prettier and serves better food.

We had our wedding reception at the South Dining Hall, and as a Subway Alumnus I can attest to its beauty. My wife lived in Lewis Hall, and the SDH was always the place of choice for her and her friends.

For those who don't know quite what they are talking about...one of the beauties of ND is that there are no frats or sororities, which create a caste system of sorts and lead to exclusivity among students. At ND, everyone is automatically in a frat or sorority...and that is their dorm. When you see 2 former ND students meet each other for the first time, one of the 1st questions they ask, if not THE first, is "What hall were you in?" My wife and I just flew to SB via Chicago, and the guy who sat next to us just happened to be a ND grad. And the first question he and my wife both asked was the dorm question.

Its actually really cool IMO, and one of the things that I love about ND (if I hadn't effed up my sophomore year in high school I might have been there :banghead2). And the fact that football players are living amongst the students...very cool. Those of you who are just arriving there...congrats and make the most of it!!!

My last post as I am off to Lake Michigan for the week w/ no Internet access. Have a good week!

The best thing about Keenan is that you have the priveledge to be attatched to Stanford. Stanford may not be the prettiest or most historic dorm, but it definitely has the best/most fun guys. And anyone that will be living in Stanford, please take Irish Lax's advice to heart. You don't want to be on FT's bad side (I learned that the hard way)

@Anchorman:
I'm a Siegfried resident. Most of the football team are staying here this summer. Siegfried was built in the late 80s and is one of the better male dorms on campus (in the sense that we have AC, our closets and rooms are pretty big). We are the all-sport champion for the last three years. I think our football team won the championships in 2008 and 2009. I'm just a rising sophomore, so I still dont know a lot about the traditions of Siegfried. Our signature event is "The Day of Man" when the guys stay outside in shorts and t-shirts on a sub-zero winter day to do collect money for the SB homeless center.

Father John, our rector is nice and approachable. I did not talk to him a lot though.
There are several football players living in Siegfried during the school year. We had John Goodman, Tyler Eifert, Austin Collinsworth, Calabrese and David Ruffer last year. (Ruffer actually kicked for Siegfried football team first before he tried out for the real team.)

Only that I stayed there a couple of nights at a reunion. My 3rd floor room had a good view of the Dome. The basement had a nice common are in the basement. My class ('74) had a nice little cocktail party there. It was a pleasant stroll to the beer tent and the NDH for much needed coffee and breakfast.

That was in '99 though.

@dshans: we had a basement back then?

All right, you caught me. I was trying to recreate two foggy nights (did I mention the beer garden? The cocktail party? the dinners with bars?) from 10 years ago. There was a common area somewhere near the ground.

Is the entry a couple of steps down from ground level?

Oh, and I was trying to say nice things about Siegfried.

No, the ground level is the lowest you can go now, but I heard there were some renovations in the last decade.

That explains a lot. Lewis always has the hottest girls on campus for some reason.

yet no reps???

:whoknows:

That's how he rolls. I brought the Green Kool-aid man to his attention, he makes it his profile pic, and yet no reps.

Hello everyone I was just assigned my dorm and I am in Keenan Hall. Any feedback on the hall? Is the North Quad have a good dining hall? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a coincidence because just over a week ago I went on a tour of the campus and my tour guy was a current ND student and I'm pretty sure he said he was in keenan dorm haha

EDIT: wait actually I think it might have been sigfried (however you spell it)

All right, all right, all right. I spent maybe ten hours in Siegfried at a reunion – that includes check-in, check-out, a cocktail party and two nights of comatose sleep at a reunion. I don't know Jack about Siegfried, though my room DID have a great view of the Dome ... I have pictures – somewhere.

I spent two years in Holy Cross Hall (Go Hawgs!) which I appreciated greatly in spite of not requesting it. I only met one guy who did. I wish a way would have been found to keep it on its feet. It really was a great location: on a hill overlooking St. Mary's lake, well on one's way to St. Mary's (no ND coeds while I was in the dorm), definitely funky with a softball field, basketball and tennis courts and a walk-in fridge in the basement, a remnant of its days as a seminary, for keg storage and food sales.

The salient point is that you're at Notre Dame. You're on campus. You WILL make life-long friends that won't all be from your dorm. You'll make friends through classes and play foosball, ping pong and some iteration of World of Warcraft.

Some of these friends will be with you lifelong. Some, to be candid, might haunt your dreams.

Pick a dorm – any dorm. You WILL grow, you WILL learn and you WILL make emotional and spiritual connections. I congratulate all who have attended, will attend and appreciate that which is Notre Dame du Lac.

I will be celebrating my 60th birthday in April/May of 2012 at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival with as many classmates (and their spouses and offspring) as possible. There were about 20 at our collective 50th and we're hoping to corral more.

solution? bring a backpack in with you.

Is it that simple now? The geezers ruling the exits had HAWK EYES and were constantly scanning the tables from their chairs to catch someone making a wrong move towards anything that looked like a bag. I once literally attempted to put ONE sandwich into my backpack and that giddy geezer sprouted up from his chair faster than you can say "Matlock marathon."

The last time I was in a ND dorm was in 1995 and I'm not even sure which one it was now. But I can agree with previous posters on the South Dining Hall. Great food. Bottom line is you can't go wrong at ND, everything is beautiful. The sports camp I went to I spent a lot of time in the aquatic center and DeBartolo Hall.

Good Luck on your semester this fall! I'm starting some pharmacy classes and I couldn't be more nervous!

Welcome to the best dorm on campus! You'll love being a Keenanite, a Keenan Knight, and you'll love Keenan nights haha

Seriously though, always glad to meet another big football fan in the dorm. Feel free to wander into 106, 108, or 110 anytime and chill with me and my six man and talk ND football or whatever. Send me a PM and i'll give you my name and stuff so we can meet up once you get to ND and i'll be happy to answer any questions you have about anything!

Congrats on making it into and correctly choosing the best school in the entire world! I can't tell you how much you're gonna love it. Enjoy the rest of your summer and, once again, welcome to Keenan! You'll be happy you got put where you did.

I miss my old six man so much. That sophmore year was maybe the most fun I've ever had in my life. And it's a great way to tie the section together with the common room for freshmen and whoever else to come by and chill.

Nostalgia....... should have gone to grad school lol

When I transferred into ND after a freshman year at IU, Bloomington, transfers were not offered campus housing. Frankly, I was happy about that. Never wanted to live in a dorm once I got out of IU. There may be no "caste" system at ND, as a previous poster mentioned (e.g., frats, sororities) but, at least at that time, the off-campus culture was a whole different ballgame than the on-campus life. I knew quite a few guys who transferred off after a year or two, but never met one who transferred on, even when a spot opened up. Maybe they've expanded dorm space now, and maybe there aren't as many crazies living in the near-northeast neighborhood. But, the only advice I can give based solely on my experiences (and, admittedly, my own eclectic tastes) is to get off campus as quick as you can. (I can hear the BOOS rising already.)

No, but it that is where you are staying, it is a great dorm. Really new, has AC, nice location, you got a real good one if that is where you are

Yep, all the frosh just got their residence hall assignments. I stayed in morrissey for a week, those rooms were tiny - thank god I got a bigger room.

How did transferring work out for you in general? As a potential transfer student, I have heard mixed things. Some good, a lot of bad.

How was your experience? Worth leaving a good place with good academics and somewhere you DO like and have a lot of fun for Notre Dame, in your opinion (or anyone else that wants to chime in)?

I'm so on the bubble right now and kind of need to make a decision soon before I pick my classes, join a fraternity (if I stay) & really buckle down and get the 3.7+ I need. I obviously love ND and wanted to go there more than anything in the world before I didn't get in..
