The next Antonio Gates.

Bueller...Bueller...

Anyways, ok..so, is this his last year of athletic ability? Not that this really matters much but for pure discussion, say he makes the team, is his bball scholly then turned into a football one?

Joey is sitting this year. If he played football, he'd be on a football scholly or walk on.

Unless he continued to play basketball, but even then I think he'd be considered a fball scholly, but I forget the rules for the duel sports schollies.

If he played basketball and football, he would count against football scholarships.

As someone mentioned, you get one more year of eligibility to play another sport. Greg Paulus played four years of basketball at Duke, and then transferred to Syracuse to play a year of quarterback.

Joey still has one more year of basketball left after this season... So will he get two years of football eligibility?

You are correct. I forgot about Freeman. But, the guy before him was Jerome Collins.

Impressive that you remembered Collins though. He was an OLB for most of his career. I forgot he moved to TE.
He and I overlapped at ND (might have been classmates) and the word around campus was always that he was one of those guys who had freakish athletic ability but just couldn't find the right fit position-wise on the field. Always seems a shame when that happens.

Anyway, back to Brooks, I found this article from back in the fall. It describes how Brooks is sitting out this season to preserve 5th year of eligibility in basketball. No mention of plans to play football; that must be a recent development.
Notre Dame men's baksetball: Brooks takes anew path - South Bend Tribune

I assume switching to football wouldn't affect his eligibility and he'd still only have one year left, but there may be some weird rule I haven't heard of. I certainly hadn't heard of the four years of Bball and a degree --> 1 year of football in a grad program without sitting out a year rule until Greg Paulus.

It's an interesting idea. I'm curious about what it would mean for the TE depth chart. Since we added Smythe late in the cycle, we are pretty full at TE: Niklas, Koyack, Welch, Heuerman, Smythe. Adding Brooks could mean: a) Welch is a big question mark coming off his injury and the staff isn't sure how much he'll be able to contribute, b) the staff still plans to use a lot of 2- and 3-tight end sets this season (with the incoming RBs and WRs, I thought it was possible they might shy away from that this season), and/or c) the staff would like to redshirt at least one of Heuerman and Smythe, and having another mature, athletic body at tight end would allow them to do that. He'd have to put on some weight in the summer, probably. Intriguing prospect, for sure.

247 confirms that Brooks will be trying out at TE this Spring and hopes to earn an offer. Open to walking on though. Was first approached by Alford about it.

They also note that Brooks played TE and WR in high school and has been working out with QB's after getting encouraged by Kyle Rudolph.

That's awesome. Needs to bulk up if he wants to play TE but 6'5" 225lb and athletic is a good start.

I love the fans tweeting players to tell them the news. You think they don't freaking know?

I like the idea. Could help us in the Redzone. Anyone know if he played football in High School?

Yes, he did. Before focusing on basketball. I'd wager he must have some value to the team in an immediate way too. I read that he has been working with the QBs for awhile now. Given that he will be a 5th year senior next year (granted he still has 4 years of fb eligibility), I'd think they'd only give him a scholly thinking he ca ncontribute right away, because the odds are slim he'd stay around for all 4 years.

Never know though, I saw him out around South Bend quite often as a student (and talked with him at length at Brothers one night), and he loves being in South Bend.

It sounds like found money to me. Maybe he'll be nothing more than an offseason story, but he could also score us a few big TD's. I'm excited to see what he can do!

Odds are zero of him staying for 4 years because he can't do so. He has one possible year of eligibility left for NCAA sports. He will try out for the football team this spring and if it doesn't work out he hasn't ruled out transferring for basketball. There is some interest from Big 12 programs according to 247.

Brian Kelly said that Brooks played hard and did everything they asked him to do. In the end, they just didn't want him taking away reps from the two freshman TE they just brought in.
