Q. The college football playoff came out, and the Big 12 got left out because they did not have a 13th game on their schedule. That's what the committee chairman said. In light of that information, does that affect how you guys might approach scheduling in the coming years here? Or is there nothing you can do about it at this point?

COACH KELLY: Well, I think everything is a fluid situation after today's decisions relative to who the four teams are. I think everybody is kind of back into their own conferences looking at did we make the right choices in scheduling and decisions? I'm sure Jack and I will get back together and look at where we are and are we doing the right things? Certainly, I think it's, again, a situation that has to be looked at and evaluated because it's such a fluid situation. Do we go to six? Do we go to eight? I think all those things are on the table for discussion as well as would we be in at 11‑1?

I think those are all valid questions to be asked, and it's our responsibility to be prepared to answer those questions based upon how we're scheduling. Fair question and one that I think we'll have to evaluate, like most conferences evaluate where they're at right now.

IMO we would not have made it in at 11-1. Perhaps we could have squeaked in had we pounded SC, ASU, Louisville (bigger win than FSU), and beaten Stanford by a larger or equal margin to Oregon.

FSU dropped to 4 at one point while the only undefeated team. TCU dropped from 3 to 6 after pounding a team by 50 just because they didn't have a quality conference championship win.

Sign me up for joining the ACC. Wouldn't have said this a few years ago, but I will now. Bump a low grade team like VA, or add another like Cinci, UCF, or Memphis, and call it a day.

Might be easier in a few years when they go to an eight team playoff, but right now, unless we're perfect, gonna be tough.

I'll add that they believe these are two separate issues. They think that Arute is speaking about potential penalties as a result of the frozen 5. Then there is a separate issue with players in trouble.

Say we join the ACC, does that mean we cancel one or multiple of USC, Stanford, Navy?

May not be the right thread for this discussion.

Please cancel Navy. That alone is reason enough to join the ACC.

But Arute says it's nothing negative. Penalties would be negative, right?

He said "at this time..." Does that mean something negative will eventually occur? Kind of strange wording by him.

Just now on his show

"there will be some changes that are possibly going to be made in south bend in the college football program."

"what that means? i'm not even certain at this point."

he keeps saying that he is not trying to be first with news, but wanted to alert people to pay attention.

"it is nothing that is out of control. take a deep breath."

Then Gino Toretta says, "all that should tell us is that we won't be surprised at coaching moves before it is all said and done."

I don't know if that last part let things slip or if that's even connected to ND, but Toretta finished after Arute's statement.

Edit: after a break, he came back and let the cat out of the bag. "fine. your head coach is being courted."

"my intention is not to come across as Joe Schad." LOL

I was just stating that there is a source that is somewhat reputable that is hearing something could be coming out.

I can't imagine how Kelly's departure could be spun as anything but a major negative.

I certainly hope changes are made. After a season like last, adjustments do need to be made.

Maybe someone's getting the can, and Quinn really is coming to South Bend.

(I can dream, right?)

That's what he said? His news is about BK? Yeah, that's absolutely not surprising, and in fact not news at all. Shrug.

The linked article gets its info from a DIFFERENT article that is just another run-of-the-mill BK bashing piece. They equate the turbulent times at ND to BK potentially being in hot water with Swarbrick (the article had no sources, just speculation), and also talked about Swarbrick himself being on the outs with "many at the University."

All speculative garbage with no sources. Just some bro getting info from another bro that has no sources and an ax to grind.

This situation is all kinds of fucked up and stupid. Kelly leaving is a negative, no matter what Arute would insist. But who would court him at this point? NFL teams? That's a pretty big ego to take a risk on, without the Harbaugh resume of success. College teams? Realistically, who would have a chance of pulling him away? Michigan is a step down, nor am I convinced they could pay him enough to even match his current compensation. Florida already has their coach. Nothing else makes sense. Or maybe nothing does.

Would BK even be considered a good hire in the NFL? Don't really believe any of that article.

LOL that article draws from that Bernstein piece which is laughably inaccurate hot garbage? Jeez...

Being serious for a second though, I think there is reasonable chance Kelly could end up at the Bears, Giants, 49ers, or Dolphins depending on what opens. But there isn't anything to warrant even discussion right now.

And you shouldn't. The article is speculating based on "sources," when the source is really just another article based on speculation with no sources.

the redskins may like his spread offense with rg3 if they decide to can gruden. Snyder is a guy who will pay and has the ego to match his checkbook. I hope im wrong though

Next.
Man.
In.

Alford, your up.

I'm a big fan of Tony's, so I hope he gets the CSU job and does well. But he's a long way down the list of coaches I'd like to see as Kelly's successor. We've twice hired guys without any HCing experience before, and both were unmitigated disasters.

I don't think Kelly would be good in DC.

To be fair, I think there IS a discussion that can be had about BK and the NFL, but it doesn't need to be of the "sky is falling" variety that will undoubtedly run rampant.

This radio show bro is just using common sense, this isn't anything substantive (yet). He probably doesn't even have a source (unless it's one of the two, crappy articles linked earlier), all he needs to do is use his platform, mention NFL job openings, and then connect BK, a coach who dipped his toes in those waters before.

Now, everyone knows who he is, and automatically uses his speculation as a "source" or a "report."

We CAN have a discussion about BK and the NFL, but we should try to do it calmly, not using a bunch of garbage info haha.
