ISIS is a joke. ISIS isn't a threat. There is no global jihad. KKK is more dangerous. I'm worried about Tea Party extremists.

Who cares, its Twitter and youtube.

What is intriguing to me is not that they hacked the Twitter and YouTube accounts, it is what information they had to post on those accounts.

They are still digging into whether any of it was classified or not. If it wasn't, then I agree with you. If it was classified, then what?

Why does Military have a Twitter account???

A good question.

Seriously? If they broke into the White House and stole a paperclip, would you be saying "who cares, it's only a paperclip?" The point isn't the paperclip, it's that they were able to break in in the first place.

I assume you'd agree there's a big difference between your house and a gym locker. Your example is relevant to the former (which didn't happen). Account security for social media accounts is much closer to the latter. As long as one isn't foolish enough to store anything valuable in it (and CENTCOM didn't), then lax security isn't much of a concern.

That assumes the "door" they got through was on the Twitter side. What if they got into a higher security arena that was internal to CENTCOM and then got information from there that allowed access to the Twitter account.

What are the chances that this was just a random extremist sympathizer, and he hacked into the account the same way the Fappening bros hacked the iCloud: simply by guessing the password.

From there, the bro posted some information that is open to the public under the guise of a "leak." At least I've read in a few places that none of the posts were classified.

This says more about the security of Twitter and YouTube than the security of DoD networks. Still embarrassing for the US military, though.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest urged reporters to note the "significance difference between what is a large data breach and the hacking of a Twitter account," but said that the hack "is something that we are obviously looking into and something that we take seriously."

I'm not sure why some are brushing off the rise of radical Islam. It's becoming an international problem.

Occam's Razor. If an actual enemy of the state broke into a military database, there are thousands of more damaging things he could do than briefly hijack a social media account.

Twitter accounts are easily hijacked, and none of the photos or documents published by the vandal were classified. Just someone (maybe an agent of ISIS, or maybe just a bored neckbeard) grabbing low-hanging fruit.

I'm sure you're probably right, and I'm not in the camp that views this as an imminent "hide yo wife hide yo kids" situation, but I also think blowing it off as "who cares?" is a bit too nonchalant.

Clearly, the threat posed by Islamism has been mostly ignored by our media outlets. Responsible journalism calls for more alarmism.

CENTCOM's Twitter account today, but what tomorrow? Your wife's Pinterest account!?

I doubt it was ISIS. Probably an ex Twitter employee who fancies themselves as the next Snowden or something like that.

I wonder if there's any truth to the rumor that the password was: USA1776

Conversely, I'd argue that "who cares?" is the most appropriate default reaction to anything that happens on Twitter.

If anything, this ought to serve as a compelling case for why American government agencies shouldn't have social media accounts.

The whole concept of a CENTCOM Twitter or Youtube page is just comical to me in it's own right...

@CENTCOM Should we drone strike this target? RT for YES, FAV for NO

@CENTCOM RT in 5 second or this will happen to you! [insert myriad of images]

Like seriously why the fuck does CENTCOM need a social media presence?

Every echelon in the military from the platoon level up to major commands has a social media presence these days. They use them to disseminate al the public affairs stuff they do: show pictures from medal ceremonies, put out useful information, etc...

Believe it or not, even the service members and civilians who work at CENTCOM have families that appreciate seeing pictures of their loved ones while their deployed, or getting little pieces of news that might impact their lives.

edit: I should add that I get that you were joking, and I laughed

ISIS has one, too. They were using it for suggestions of how to kill that Jordanian pilot they captured. Pretty morbid suggestions, I might add.

This got me thinking....

when my friend left his phone on his desk and his Facebook open, I posted some funny shit on his status.

If you knew ISIS' s Facebook password, what would you post as their status?

I'd say something like:

I'm sitting here in Syria absolutely craving some Matzah Balls.
