My wife and I just passed South Bend (great to see the Golden Dome) on our way to Chicago. I was there last year for the Miami game but my wife has never been. Any recommendations on activities or restaurants while we are there? Thanks in advance.

Recommendations:

UNOs the original. (Restaurant.)

Definitely cruise down town. Afoot even better.

The Hancock Tower.

The Pier. (Might still be too early.)

Wrigleyville. And Wrigley. (Go Cubs go!)

Try to catch a Blackhawks game.

I suppose you've already seen the FB stadium.

We are probably doing the pier and Wrigley doesn't have any tours yet. We may walk around the outside though.

The Shedd Aquarium is pretty rad. So is the Field Museum. Walking up and down Michigan Ave is pretty cool too.

I don't know if it's too early for this, but people really like the architecture tour along the Chicago River.

Dude agreed with both of these.

Right next to the FB stadium too.

The Chicago River has some awesome beer joints/restaurants along it too.

I've been to Lou Malnati's and it's amazing. My small school principal is from Chicago and he said Gino's East is his favorite. I've also hear great things about UNOs though.

We are doing the museum and have talked about the aquarium. We also wanted to do an architecture tour but tomorrow is supposed to be 30 degrees and windy. May not be able to

If you want go full tourist, the Gangster Tour is actually pretty effing cool. They show you Capone's old stomping ground areas, and where the St Valentines Day Massacre took place.

As far as food/drinks, I enjoy old grimy establishments with a lot of history like the Billy Goat Tavern or Miller's Pub.

It's nice to hear good things about Chicago. My first thoughts we're avoid that hell hole they call an airport and don't get shot.

Ahhh, yes! Lower Wacker, right?

I went there for lunch with an ND classmate in the late 70's. When "cheeseburger, cheeseburger, Pepsi – no Coke" hit SNL with Belushi and Aykroyd I remembered it vividly. Years later I was in Chi Town for a wedding. At the end of a long day (and night, it was about 2 or 3 AM) my wife and I were still "rolling" with friends of the groom and looking for a place to grab a bite.

I blurted out "Billy Goat Tavern" and the other couple, Chicago natives, were more than happy to head there. It's been years so I don't know how much, if at all, it's changed, but its history with Chicago newspaper writers (when the Tribune was "legit") is fascinating.

GO!

Your boy does this for a living as a concierge

Must do's:
Michigan Ave.
Millenium Park
Navy Pier

Museums are great. Museum of Science and Industry, Field Musueum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium, and the Art Institute are all quite impressive.

Restaurants:
Portillo's for Chicago style hotdog and Italian beef.
Lou Malnati's or Gino's for Chicago style pizza.
Signature lounge in the John Hancock for a drink and awesome view.

Shoreline is also running river boat tours tomorrow at 10:45 from the Michigan ave bridge

IMO, downtown Chicago is the cleanest and safest of the Big Three far and away. It has all the perks of NYC and LA, but with a Midwest sensibility.

If it weren't for visiting about ten times while my parents lived there, another four or so times while I lived in Indiana and about 40-50 flight connections thru O'Hare ( not one on time) then you'd be right.

Also, you don't need to visit Chicago to know this:

The 15 Most Murderous Cities in the United States - PolicyMic

If you are visiting Chicago you shouldn't have to worry about the murder rate, no tourist attractions are even remotely dangerous. Downtown Chicago is gorgeous, clean, and probably the most fun major city (when the weather isn't sub-artic).

Well maybe besides US Cellular...but who wants to go there anyways.

Or a humid sweat box in the summer.

Hey don't trash the airport. I have a part time security job there.

That said when I graduate this May and get my PT license in October I am gone from that there!

Started working in DT Chicago on the 1st. The city isn't that bad. If you wander south side and look like a tourist, yes, they will pick on you. I grew up in STL and I would say it was much scarier there than in Chicago. My only advice is keep your phone close. They will snatch that quickly regardless of where you are.

I forgot to mention Berghoff's. The atmosphere, beer and bar are worth a stop. I've spent a bit of time on a bar stool there a few times over the years.

I thought it closed up shop a number of years ago, but I might be, gratefully, wrong.

Eat, drink, walk and be merry.
