How much do you pay for cable/internet?

I have Directv with 2 TVs hooked up to HD Genie DVR. 220 channel package (no HBO, Showtime, etc) $112 per month. Comcast 25mbps internet on promo for first year at 29.99/ month. I have my own cable and DSL modems, so I can just threaten and switch back if needed. Uverse just became available in my neighborhood so I may go to that if Comcast won't keep my price down after promo expires. I do like Directv other than during a thunderstorm. In looking at my bill, I am being charged $47 for home phone with no long distance through AT&T. I will have to get that ripoff looked into.

I have a cpu and 4Tb hard drives attached to my smart tv. I have no idea whats on primetime tv and havent for six years.

Went from an apartment to a house. Not quite the boonies, but a little outside of town. Fiber is still being considered here, so I should only have a year with this. Honestly, not as noticeable a difference as you would think. The other side of the internet only operates so fast. At 1000, you're faster than everything there is.

That's some insane speed up, if I was still a videogamer, I'd have loved playing at your house.

I changed from 5mbps Dsl to 25mbps Cable, and could tell no difference playing BF4 or something similar. It's more ping for gaming. Downloading music, movies, whatever.... on the other hand, is a totally different story....thread jack over....carry on

So I work at a cable/internet and phone company now since I made this thread. I get everything they offer for 14$ a month. Now when you guys sign up and the package with the phone is the best deal.... they are lying to you. There is always a package that is internet and tv only it may only be 15 dollars of so cheaper than the plan with phone but that is 15 dollars you keep in your pocket. As far as threatening to switch services most rep will not care one bit because they less money they give you during the month the more their commission is. Best practice is to cancel service and wait a couple days and then you see the magical offer show up. Now that is not to say you won't get that one rep who has a heart and will help you out but that is few and far between. If anyone has any questions about this stuff let me know. Oh and if ever calling in for a better price ask for a supervisor they just want off the phone and will give you the world.

Unfortunately until we move, satellite isn't an option. To many trees in the way. I'm debating on maybe slimming the package and going with one box.

$120/mo for FiOS incl. every channel (plus multi-room DVR), FDV, 30/30 internet. It's discounted ~$75 for me since I work for VZW.

Maybe it's regional pricing, but I also work for VZ and I only have the Triple Play as an option, and that's ~135 for one box and one DVR after taxes. The employee discount is actually more than I currently pay for the Double Play so I'm opting out... Cell phone plan was worth it though.

Edit: Company hasDirectTV in the break rooms/gym and if it's sprinkling that thing is unwatchable.

We have 4 smart phones, 2 laptops, and a smart TV. What would be an optimal speed to subscribe too? When our Uverse was installed they claimed it was fast and so on. It hasn't been. I had my GF check the bill and its only 18mb speed.

Also I'd like to move to a streaming device. Any suggestions on which ones are best?

Start with DSLReports Home : Broadband ISP Reviews News Tools and Forums and check out reviews in your area. Then head to Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and test your speed. I'll bet you a million vbucks you're not getting close to what UVERSE says you're paying for.

Majority of Uverse users I know aren't all that pleased since they switched. I only have Uverse and Comcast to choose from, so I went with Comcast. Typically cable, but rule is faster than Uverse or DSL.

I have a mix of streaming devices. Roku, Amazon Fire stick, Chromecast. All work. Depends on what you have (content provider) and what else you want to use it for. I find myself using the Fire stick more than anything. Likely because I have Amazon Prime, and it works very well (standalone, without a tablet casting) with my slingbox. Let me know what you use it for, and I can help maybe.

It's pretty hard to get away totally from cable. I have friends that have gone to slingtv, which is limited, and have stacked other things on top (like Disney). Check this out https://www.sling.com/package . You still will need an HD antenna for local... If you have generous friends with Comcast, and they are willing to set you up with a login, you can stream almost everything. I have a few buddies on my account.

I am definitely not an Apple guy. I did the test. My numbers were 11 and 1.75. I've looked at Sling and decided that is a good option with the Disney add on for the little one. I just want to ensure I have a decent speed internet to support everything.

11 is borderline not enough. I'd say you need a solid 15 if you want to stream, surf, etc.. If you'll be running multiple TVs, min 15, probably want to be more in the 18-25 range. That is unless you want to buffer. If you know how to config your router, recommend setting QOS to prioritize certain devices (your streaming devices) or types of traffic.

Streaming HD content requires about 7-9MB per stream. Lot's of fluctuations based on encoding, the device, etc., but factor in 9MB per stream and you'll be pretty safe.

Called Time Warner and they offered me $145 per month for the same services.

Here is what I get with either package (one tv):

HBO, Showtime, Starz
50 mbps
Phone (that I won't use)
DVR

My question is how do I get this price lower? Is it even possible? I haggled with the Time Warner lady for half an hour and that was the best I could do. I really don't want to go from paying 107 to 145...

I've read this entire thread but I'm looking for specific advice to my situation. Alternatively, if this is a good price and I just got lucky with the $107 just tell me.

$107 is stupid cheap. I have 150 mbps internet but the rest of my package looks similar to yours. I had $125 for the first year, $155 for the second year, and now I'll be at $180 going forward.

I think I was at 30 mbps with the 107 price. So you think 145 is a reasonable price for the next year?

I still have not called my current provider back with the Time Warner offer in hand so I am hoping I can get them to beat that.

I also forgot to mention that I have to provide my own modem at that price.

If you can get the modem for $10 or less, that sounds about right.

I am not sure how their system works but at my work sometimes, to close the sale we will sign the customer up for internet first at a new customer rate. Then we will add on the cable 2nd at a current customer rate which is more heavily discounted.

$107 is a heck of a deal.

I have Comcast Xfinity X1 Triple Play with 150Mbps internet, Showtime, HBO, Starz with DVR and two digital receivers plus phone. I pay $158 all inclusive (taxes, digital converter, universal connectivity fee, regional sports fee, broadcast TV fee, franchise fee, FCC regulatory fee, regulatory recover fee). My base cost before the bullshit fees is 119.99 per month.
