How is Bobby Elliott doing? (And Prayers, too)

Has anyone heard about how Bobby is doing? I think this is more important than some of our more trivial foibles; this man has as much of a stake in 12-0 as anyone. Anyone know how his surgery went?

METHA
May Bobby be filled with loving kindness;
May Bobby be healthy and strong;
May Bobby be free of all dangers, internal or external.
May Bobby be filled with the ease of well being.
May Bobby be happy!

In case anyone is wondering... bone marrow transplants require getting blasted with chemotherapeutic drugs, some of which can damage the kidneys. After a BMT, the individual has to continue to take immunosuppressant medications, some of which can also damage the kidneys. The ability of a medication to harm the kidneys is its "nephrotoxicity", and he was on a regimen that likely destroyed them.

He is currently caring for himself using, from the sounds of it, peritoneal dialysis. The role of the kidneys is to purify the blood and maintain the appropriate balance of a number of things, including electrolytes. Peritoneal dialysis utilizes the peritoneum (a layer of tissue inside the abdomen) as a membrane, or filter. The tissue is highly vascular, so he essentially surrounds it with fluid with a certain concentration of various substances and lets equilibrium take care of the rest (toxins/excess substances move out of the blood and into the fluid). The fluid is then drained. The process is time consuming, it is difficult, and it requires a lot of resolve. Needless to say, Bobby Elliott is a tough dude.

Kidney transplants, while being major surgeries, are actually done quite frequently these days. He is at increased risk of infection during the procedure due to his current immunosuppression, but I'm sure he will be in good hands. It will also help to prevent his body from rejecting the kidney.

May God bless Bobby Elliott and grant him a speedy recovery.

God bless Coach Elliott and Godspeed on the recovery. On a somewhat trivial note, didn't I see an interview with him today on UND.com? Must have been prerecorded.

It was, they mentioned somewhere. When checking, I was unsure whether surgery was being performed today 2/7 or yesterday. But in BK's interview(s) from yesterday, he made it sound like he was under the knife as Kelly interviewed around noon. By the way, I am impressed with the emotional display Brian Kelly tried to hold back when speaking of the issue.

Bobby may have come late, but he will always be a valued member of the family; Bobby is what football at ND is all about.

And Bobby and Harry make Brian Kelly one of the greatest coaches of all time, just on the basis of their hire.

That's good news. Diaco and Kelly had a lot of priase for him over the past year. Kids really seem to like him

Update from 247 says Coach Elliott was released from the hospital and is on the road to recovery. As long as there are no setbacks, the plan is for him to be back for spring practice.

To persevere through that is amazing. Dealt with some adversity on the field too...just unreal....Job Well Done is an understatement.

Take care of yourself coach!

Should we wear kidney bean necklaces during the Spring Game for Bob?

Buster, you are a freak! I love you man!

But I am so glad Bobby is doing well. Not for a selfish reason. The man deserves a break!

Coach Elliott seems like a complete gem to me. He has managed to turn a nearly impossible situation on the field into a pretty good show, and the fact that a player of Max Redfield's quality wants to come here with him as position coach says a lot too.

Almost more than that, Elliott is a mature man, not a youngster "on his way up". If Kelly stays longterm, Elliott is a guy [like Hiestand and Martin] who probably stays too --- giving the staff great stability.

I like Elliott a great deal. We're lucky to have a mature coach like him in the secondary.
