But he’s also done some cool shit the Angeli/Minchey wouldn’t have been able to do.
Angeli looked mobile enough and was dropping some dimes in the second half. I'm starting to come around on him as the QB next year

Yeah I'm not saying hartman has been terrible but you even though he's like 47 he hasn't played in this style of offense ever so there is a large learning curve even for him and he hasn't really fit as well as we all thought

Parker did not cost ND. Hartman and occasionally the o-line not being able to execute in big moments of big games cost ND. Hartman panicked at times against OSU, Duke, and especially UL. Plain and simple. Would not have mattered who was calling the plays.
Parker was handed a loaded offense, and he blew it. He runs the ball out against OSU we win the game. He scored 5 TDs in the span of 3 games there. Parker had no excuses not to be at least mediocre. He scored less against OSU than Maryland did, blew it against Louisville, needed heroics against Duke, we should have never been there. He's got a championship level defense backing him up and providing him with lots of opportunities, but there's too many 3 and outs.

Not in the last 5 games
Hartman is holding this offense back at times. Defenses are not afraid of Hartman’s passing. That is why ND has struggled to run as much in last 5 games (although it was little better today). They can load box. Hartman has not made teams pay often enough for stopping the run.

Parker has not been great but has not been as bad as this makes it sound. In all 3 games listed here, Hartman made a lot of bad decisions and against Duke and Louisville in particular, Hartman played so badly that the defenses could confidently stuff ND’s run game. And that will continue to be the focus of opponents defense until Hartman can consistently make them pay, which he has not been able to do. WRs being injured did not help ND but if qb and oline can’t consistently execute does not matter what is called or who is calling it.

They'd have more than two losses without Hartman on this roster and less than two losses if Rees was still the O coordinator. Maybe undefeated if they hired a competent person with experience.

Yup, don’t think anyone thinks Hartman is not better than what Rees and BK recruited. But I seem to remember everyone wanting Rees fired as OC as well.
ND would also be undefeated with a Bo Nix or M Penix at QB and Parker as OC this year IMO. We will learn a lot about Parker between now and next season just as we have Al Golden. Some of the same people on this board now praising Golden were calling for his head much of last season. The point is that Hartman is good, but so far was not NC good, sadly. And the jury is/should still be out on Parker.

And Parker was not handed a loaded offense. Top 10 QB; Top 5 RB; Top 15 OL; average and inexperienced receivers equals good, occasionally really good, but not loaded offense.

Easily the most loaded and experienced offense in some time, probably going back to Weis. Weis would have killed for this OL, but his skill players were just a bit better.

Will Fuller isn't running out there this season. (Though Tyree, finally in the last couple of games, is flashing the ability to take the top off a defense). There also are not three Top 10 draft picks on this OL.

Personally I think the expectations that Hartman was going to be like a top five QB in the country were always a little unrealistic. There are reasons he was a pegged as Day Three draft pick, and a lot of them haven't changed. That said, he's good enough, I'd still say he's the best QB we've had since Clausen. Smarter than Kizer, better arm than Book. With better/more creative playcalling - if Rees were our OC? - I think we're probably 11-1 and a CFP contender. Alas.

Here is the mesh for Sam's second pick...if you go back two plays before this you'll see a very similar play. The WRs are flipped and the route trees appear different, but the Pitt LBs and S defend that one more aggressively. The OL blocking scheme is identical (RT 1v1, C/RG double, LG/LT double, TE coming across to kick unblocked DE). This play can't truly be an RPO though given Hartman's read. I'm guessing it was a designed/pre-determined run to pick up the first on 2 and 1. It also gave ND a look at how Pitt would defend that or a similar formation, which Parker came back to two plays later. Pitt won this exchange, but one minor positive is it at least shows Parker is trying to scheme plays off one another.

I was very frustrated watching the first half by some of the interior run plays, OL play and ultimately Sam’s decisions. Was the first pick miscommunication, poor route, bad throw or all of the above? The second pick saw a lineman or backer drop and 5 guys around the receiver. If that was a RPO then he made the wrong choice because Estime could’ve gotten the ball as the lane was opening. Watching the replay, Estime pulled up and picked up the guy coming free to Sam’s left, so I don’t know wtf was right or wrong. Hopefully, Sam and Parker raise their level these next 3 games, especially with Evans and probably Thomas out.

First pick felt like he short-armed it just a little and the DB made a nice play on the ball to outmuscle/cut off Rico coming back for it. Flores, too, has to be stronger there.

Second one was just a bad decision. Felt like a play where he decided pre-snap that he was throwing to the tight end in the seam and never even looked to see if the backer was dropping into coverage. He threw it pretty quick.

Is Thomas hurt again? He played pretty well early. Was nice to see him back.

Several of the writers at the game felt the first pick was a combination of Rico not selling the interference on the safety well (the safety should have been called for PI) and Hartman didn’t have great ball placement (should have led Rico with the throw). The second pick looked more like a bad decision by Hartman.

Thomas came up gimpy in the third quarter down the middle. As we’ve said before, hamstrings can nag, so really not sure what Thomas will add down the stretch.

The QB and wide receivers under Weis were waaaaay better.
I'm being a little facetious, but from a talent standpoint this is still the most talented and most experienced offense we've seen since Weis. With Kelly we were lucky to have one good WR a year, or the QB was a struggle, or the RB talent wasn't there, etc. Sometimes it was multiple positions because of the poor recruiting. We were a little thin at WR still this year when a bunch of guys were injured, but the talent is certainly improved from previous seasons.

Is it me or does our offense struggle to get plays in? Most the time I feel they are late to lineup and therefore get a lack of opportunity to scan the defense and audible.

The booth is scanning the defense for the audible that's why it can come in late. They aren't late like the previous decade with Kelly where we'd burn timeouts with abandon. In this case, I think it's you.
