Would not be at all. You want consistent movement and big plays. But if you can only have one, give me the chain moving drives.

Chain moving drives that don’t necessarily equate to points over long touchdowns. Got it

Never did we discuss scoring/not scoring. Don't invent field goal posts to move. Big plays are more often indicative of blown assignments by the defense. Those come and go and if you're always moving the chains, they'll come.

Total 1st downs is a really good stat to measure an offense's effectiveness. This isn't a controversial observation or opinion..

OTOH, the way NC State was playing defense was pretty boom or bust. They loaded the box to stop us, and often did for awhile, except when we got through to their backfield and they had no one left.

Okay that’s fine. I will take points and chunk plays over first downs. My only qualm with the lack of chain moving was the egregious 4 TE set on 3rd and 2.

Good point. They might be better than we think too.

I'm with Ulukinatme. We only had 16 1st downs (State had 20). We had chunk plays on broken coverage, and an Estime 80 yarder and Tyree a 65 yarder. We were just ok at moving the ball today. A lot to improve on.
Slightly disagree…. I think the issue is play calling wasn’t aggressive enough

Nc state sold out to stop run and short passes… middle slants and posts were open all day for big plays but we kept running on first down, it maybe worked 4 or 5 out of 20 times. One was an 80 yarder because there’s not much of a second line of defense the way they were playing

Nc state was set up to hit big plays on, I think we could and should have hit more early

The big plays weren’t indicative of blown assignments. They were indicative of an offense capitalizing on what was given to them by an aggressive defense and finding the openings. I consider that very well done.

My biggest issue was the first down play calling into a loaded box…especially in the first half.
Agree, would have liked to see a spread formation then run it. Otherwise I like his play calling.

It did seem we started every drive between the 15 & 25 for most of the game.

We have weapons in the kicking game.

Their defense is legit, and Armstrong can be quite good. If he develops a couple of credible WRs I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they make some noise in the ACC and win eight or nine games in the regular season.

I’d grade him out at a solid B. In my mind, he had three really spectacular moments.

That play coming out of the delay was schemed beautifully. Pete Sampson had a tweet about it, but basically we schemed our three best linemen into a spot to be blocking at the point of attack for Audric. An unbalanced formation with Alt lined up as a TE.

Coming back to that TE wheel route to Staes after Sam slung one at his feet in the 1H was great. It was there the first time, and if not for the pass might’ve gone for 6.

In that pistol-full house formation, I think we all would’ve killed GP if he had run it again, but the PA to Sherwood was a beautiful call. Set it up by running Audric the first time.

It’s a chess match, but I think overall Gerry was good more than he was bad yesterday. And the good was really good.

War Daddy really used that weather delay to his advantage. That’s some veteran level shit, especially given how Tony Gibson was eating our lunch early on.

Opinions are like heads everyone has one.

From my stand point the OSU game is looking at being the same exact is last year. We have yet to show that we are willing (not successful) to take shots down the field.

Proof was yesterday they loaded the box and took us a half to adjust. I am happy to see they could adjust. *some of this may have been weather related*. They don’t have the talent OSU does on defense.

I would rather show we are willing to have gone deep to give the running game an opportunity early. OSU is going to load the box just like NCST did yesterday and if the o-line struggled in the first half against NCST they are going to struggle against OSU.

IF Central Michigan test this o line we are going to be in trouble against the good d lines.

Uneven offensive performance, but really executed when it mattered. I'm sure the offensive line will continue to improve

No... in any sport you want to do what you prepare to do and you want to win on that game plan with adjustments during the game.

This was a very BK like game. Boring jab, jab, jabs then either the defense doesn't execute or they install a small wrinkle and Josh Adams is off for another 50 yd run.

I never had a single doubt that ND was going to impose their will and wear down NC State with the run game even if they didn't make some on the fly adjustments as NC State showed it's hand.

This is a BS take. If they had 30 first downs and 400 yards of offense you’d be complaining that there was no explosive plays.

Explosive plays count, don't they?

Was Parker perfect? No. But after a rough start, the offense settled in and 1) hit on a couple huge plays, and 2) sustained drives against what could be the best defense we play this year.

It was a good showing.

This was evident in the fourth quarter. NCState did not want to tackle Estime and it showed.

The offense made them quit. On the road, hostile environment, opponent's Super Bowl and they go for 450 yards and 4.6 YPC? I'll take that all day.

Adjustments were key, especially after the delay, but even after "halftime" as well.

And this idea that if there is time on the clock in the first half and they're going to use it to step on the opponent's dick is about as refreshing of a football concept that has come to Notre Dame in years.

Cool breakdown!

Trying to imagine what I'd pay for a massively expanded version of this, viz. every single play on both sides of the ball, with brief ID of heroes/goats per play. Sort of a video version of what Brian Cook does (used to do?) on mgoblog.

Say what you want about the number of yards that NC St. ran up against the Irish but consider the legit penalties that occurred by "stupidity" (Kiser offsides on a punt, Morrison flagrant foul out-of-bounds, etc.) of and the fictitious ones called by the junior league officials that prolonged drives! Irish should have rolled up a 35+ point win against them IF those were eliminated!

ND outgained them 456 to 344, we averaged 7.5 YPP they averaged 4.4 YPP. That game was an utter domination on both sides of the ball by ND.

Other then the 1st Q, I am not sure what game people were watching, nor how they can complain.

Things to clean up? Sure, ran into a really good D? Yeah Steamrolled them after adjustments? 100%

You can't get much more balanced than that. IMO, the key tendency is whether the OC is calling the same one or two plays over and over under the same circumstances? For instance, does he call the same run play on 3rd & 3 whether you are at your own 25 or somewhere else on the field. From my non-professional coaching eye, I think Parker is doing a great job of not falling into a routine when calling plays.
