I like having Parker in the booth and Gino on the sideline. Hartman is a 24 year old 6th yr senior, but this arrangement pays dividends in 2024 when a younger, less experienced signal caller comes of age.

Those calls. Yards for days. Impressive. I very much hope we can keep that up week by week.

I’m very cautiously optimistic the same way I was before the game,… if we feel anywhere near this good after USC, even giving a rough game in there somewhere, then I’ll get rid of the cautiously part.

I think George Porter called a fine game. We will need to hit more shots against the big boys, but it's a nice start.

NC State will be a test. That’s my barometer for how this season will go. They have a good defense. Obviously not the best team we will face but they are capable of keeping us in check. Dominate them, and undefeated is obtainable.
They certainly will be, they lost Leary but gained Brennan Armstrong, who followed UVA's previous OC to Raleigh. So, veteran presence at QB, who is in his 6th year just like Hartman, though he does appear to have regressed the past couple of years.

Their defense is no joke. They averaged 19.4 points, 100.7 rushing yards and 326.9 total yards per game last year — numbers that ranked in the top two in the ACC and top 20 in the country.

NC State has a very young defense. They are probably looking to outscore people with Anae at OC and Armstrong at QB until they get settled in.

Hence a clock chewing offense that runs the ball ends up being just what the doctor ordered.

They return 6 starters from a top 20 unit nationally last year

I really hope we see Tyree and Greathouse get more snaps going forward.

Parker’s offense looked identical to Rees’s offense. I don’t see any difference besides the calls and rotations. Being that it was Navy, hard to take much from it good or bad. We obviously looked good.

This is gonna sound a little ass-backwards but the best thing about yesterday’s game plan was that it was very vanilla. There was virtually nothing exotic, it reminded me a lot of watching an October NFL game.

All they did was call normal stuff and execute it well. This is also basically what Georgia has done for years, and it works as long as you have a talent edge or are efficient.

100% agree. I said this exact same thing just yesterday.

I think Tommy will be a great coach in the NFL someday. But in college, I feel it's more about getting the best athletes to execute easier game plans and let them play fast and confident.

Coach Golden essentially threw too much NFL stuff at last year's Def, and paid for it. It was reported he simplified things in order to get the guys to play faster w/o all the thinking. I believe I read the same about Parker --> that he was essentially taking what Tommy installed but just simplifying it.

Again, teams with top-end talent and with staffs who coach them well, but not in overcomplicated manners seem to play the most consistent, high-level football across a full season.

5-6 depending. With a second string littered with sophomores they're probably going to play a lot. Multiple things being true simultaneously.

Their returning LB is injury prone and has two newcomers alongside him. They open at UConn this weekend, which probably won't tell us a great deal, but I certainly hope they win.

Parker did throw in a few new looks a far as formations, but while he wasn't exotic, he was diversified in his play calling. He's smart not to move too far away from last years schemes. Otherwise it would be Sam plus 10 others learning a new O. You could tell SH spent a lot of time with Parker after he arrived on campus.

Fair points, Jig.

Good news is Hartman is very familiar with NC State having played them 5 times. He's 3-2 overall, 1-2 in Raleigh. Both losses were close contests.

Definitely going to be solid challenge for the boys, but I'm sure they'll be up for a heightened challenge following the two easier games to start the szn.

Fuck it, I want quick drives and to pummel those assholes into the ground, no chewing clock with a low scoring game. We already gave them the win under BK in the storm, no charity here.

For me
Tommy never called a good game last season.
He called some good drives, but never for the whole game.

Parker called a damn near perfect game.
Someone better tell the greatest coach in the history of college football that Tommy Rees is worse than Parker lol

Tommy put together a lot of really good game plans. That's why he's at Alabama right now.

As Roosevelt once put, comparison is the thief of joy. I'm just glad that the Park experiment looks like it's paying off pretty well so far.

Yup. If the OC job was Euchre then Parker played his cards very well on Saturday, but Rees also dealt him a damn near perfect hand.

I feel the need to premise this with, I have been impressed with Parker everytime he’s been in front of the media. He strikes me as a very sincere guy. Very easy to root for. And I truly hope he crushes it at ND. I hope we go undefeated, win a Natty, Freeman is HC of the year, and Parker does win the Broyles.

However, I’m going to try and remind myself of how I felt 1-2 months ago. With the amount of talent we have to work with, I expected these types of outcomes almost regardless of who was OC. The true test for Parker comes next year when he has to find his own answer at QB.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I feel like we're forgetting the 2020 and 2021 ND offenses here. Those were both top 15-20 units in CFB and neither had as good a qb as Hartman running the show. If Rees were still here I'm 100% confident our offense would cook under him too.

I get exactly what you're saying here, but this is a later problem for Luckylucci and everyone else.

We're so far off from having to consider this, I'm fine with putting it on the back burner and enjoying the present. If Hartman can be all he can be, this is going to be an attractive landing spot. Big OL, running game, tight ends for safety valves. SC has a swiss cheese defense so you know what you're getting into there and elsewhere.

Keep in mind also that the two QB who left this program are now pretty far down the depth charts at their new landing spots too.

Excellent point.

NC's HC probably thought they had seen the last of Sam when he entered the portal. lol

I’m not sounding any alarms for next season.

I can enjoy the present, which I did immensely on Saturday, while also recognizing that Parker was dealt an incredible hand to start. And, I’m not sure this is a true indication of Parker’s abilities as an OC.

Rees recruited and coached those QB’s. It’s his fault.

There are true tests on our schedule that will tell us what Parker is capable of doing with a solid hand. 11 regular season games left before he gets a final grade for the year but I don't think he could've done more on his first test. It was an A+

Seems more like BK called the shots on the recruitment, because once he was gone Rees landed Carr, Minchey, and Hartman. Pretty good trio in a matter of months. I would say he got quite a bit out of Book, Coan, Buchner, and Pyne given each of their limitations.

Ludwig or Klein could have been dealt the same hand and would have arrived with a lot more positive reaction from the fans. Ludwig especially. Parker was received as a lukewarm hire. At best. Considering the circumstances that led up to Saturday, I think he should be given a great deal of credit. That's about as clean of a performance as we've seen in a very long time. The cards were dealt and the guy in the seat at the table was The War Daddy.

You play the hand you're dealt. That's life. Parker didn't wander in off of the street from an analyst job. He was on the staff last year. When you consider how everything went down with hockey games, the WTF reaction from the national public and the disappointment a lot of us felt about the hire he walked into the hand without a lot of fanfare or confidence from the fans. Parker can say he blocked out the noise, that it doesn't bother him and give us the sound bytes but these guys know what is being said.

If Saturday had been a shaky sloppy performance nobody would talking about the hand he was dealt. I think most people understand the situation as it is and 60 minutes of real football is just the beginning of a sample size. He's going to have some ups and downs. There will be play calls where we collectively wonder "why?". There will be some off games that are shaky, and hopefully they win them.

He's going to go up against Gibson at NCST in a few weeks. They just missed each other at WVU. That's going to be something to look at.

The run game was much more north south, we ran slants and a couple screens. Hartman was under center quite a bit. Yes the line blocked well and was well coordinated, but overall the play development was much faster with the exception being the shots down the field that you would expect to develop slower. The PA game was set up much better, and ran a lot more crossers that were open but were not thrown to because other guys were open downfield. I believe it was maybe the first drive of the game on the deep out to Jayden Thomas, Tyree was also running wide open across the field underneath. It looked the same in the sense that it was more pro-style sets with TE's in the game, but it was hardly identical to Rees. I agree it is hard to make too much of it being navy, but I felt like there were very few if any plays where it was obvious from the moment they lined up that we either didnt have numbers or the play was going nowhere fast. We wasted 5-6 plays a game last year in that way.

Also 100% agree that I want to see Tyree and JG on the field more. Also cant wait to see Flores more involved in the passing game..he is crazy good in and out of his breaks.
