Can I get in on a PM.

Also, it's really upsetting for me to hear about Powlus in this negative light. He was my favorite player growing up. Being about 45 minutes from Berwick, he was definitely my childhood idol.

Here you all go, I don't give a shit. Mods can delete if they want. Fuck Polian

We lost that game in 2021, Freeman never had a chance

I'm not going to divulge too much about Powlus, a lot of it is personal and has to do with players and their families but let's just say there's reasons that we lost out on Amon Ra, Cody Simon, Sonny Styles, Eichenberg etc, many of those families never considered sending another kid to Notre Dame because the way Powlus treated players and their families. It was part of his job to look out for families and he never made a serious effort to be effective in that role and was so apathetic towards the treatment of players and their families that it drove many players and their families to absolutely despise Notre Dame. Powlus stuff goes much deeper but I don't want to say too much without telling people's personal stories, not my place. He is a genuinely bad and incompetent person (totally botched the Andy Ludwig situation, him and Hunter Bivin who is another cancer to ND football) and I don't say any of this lightly.

Polian had this golden ideal for Notre Dame that was a total fabrication of his own mind where ND was this haven for only the smartest (often white) kids from private and catholic schools who were also good at football. Polian would take a list of the top ~750 recruits in a class and strike off ~70% of the list to eliminate those who were not RKGs. Polian then would not allow the staff to make any attempt to contact these people who were outside of this narrow scope that he had set based on high school, standardized testing, geographic area (basically struck off every recruit from Florida), and unfortunately I believe sometimes race. The whole "shopping down a different aisle" thing was a figment of Polian's imagination that BK enabled him to put into practice for many years at Notre Dame.

Secondarily, Polian did everything in his power to shut down any NIL efforts in preparation for the rule change in July 2021. I was part of a group working hard on putting together some NIL efforts for HS recruits and also helped with the IPC project. Polian did everything possible to undermine those efforts. When IPC tried to involve HS recruits and pay them for media appearances he shut it down, when the other group tried to steer recruits and transfers to ND he undermined them in admissions (Josh Downs was going to come to ND for a measly $100k for the 2022 season but Polian stopped it). Polian never wanted ND players to make a penny besides "real NIL" he fought tooth and nail to stop there from being general income for every player then when he lost that battle he decided to target walk-ons and make sure that all NIL was directed towards scholarship players (disastrous for culture and team chemistry). Originally in 2021 we wanted to pay $25k to every scholly player and $2.5k to every walk on, he said it was too much and that they would all be arrested if they had that much in their pockets. He went to the press to have them torpedo any efforts and refuse to write about IPC or any ND NIL where we tried to gain momentum. He never wanted NIL numbers advertised in spite of a lot of evidence that it helped with recruiting and at the end of the day it was really him who never wanted transfers at ND, as much as admissions only wanted grad transfers, he wanted NO transfers.

Lastly, it should be known, that many would consign Peloquin to the company of Bivin, Polian, BK, and Swarbrick. Yet, Peloquin strove to elevate the Notre Dame to new heights, but he was shackled by those bums and their antiquated vision of some sort of pure white bastion of college football against the sea of darkness of NIL and players who like football more than going to class

Powlus sucks and has sucked for a long time. He was demoted and is no longer involved with football whatsoever.

the irony of Polian's stance on recruiting was that ND would let studs from prominent Catholic schools like Chase Young etc go to OSU without ever even reaching out
On Chris Zorich's podcast, Tom Lemming told a story about Chase Young's recruitment. Lemming has been friends with DeMatha's HC for decades and he asked him why ND didn't get Chase Young. DeMatha's HC told Lemming that it was because Kelly never visited the school, he would always send the position coach or the area recruiter. Urban, on the other hand, was constantly at the school.

At least some of that about Polian I buy at face value, no question.

And it kind of goes with some of my annoyances about how "things get done at ND" or have gotten done in the past.

"We'll do the the ND way" often means you're not playing the same game as everyone else while pretending you are, and it sucks. Happened a lot during BK's tenure.

Well sheet maybe Kelly had his can't be done at ND attitude and left for a different set of reasons, unless he was a part of this problem? Or, did he just succumb to it while here and just did what he could do for ND recruiting and then finally left for LSU. And hopefully, MMFF is pushing back against this shit (or getting people to do so).

Lemming still thinks ND should own every Catholic school player and will become a dynasty again on the back of Chicago Catholic League kids.

There's something to be said for trying to be more present in the schools where we likely have a better chance of landing guys, but recruiting is so national and coaches time is so limited that I don't know how realistic it is.

Maybe we take a page out of the Texas Tech playbook and bring someone on staff from each of the big private school conferences to be our consigliere for the area.

Spicy. The brothers going to different schools has annoyed me for a while. Amon Ra, Sonny Styles, Eichenberg, etc were massive losses.

Powlus is still around and my mind immediately jumped to JOK + NOB to Michigan, which is more of the same. Obviously there are several other factors at play here but you do start to wonder…

I mean generally I feel like ND doesn't do enough outreach to catholic schools across the country. I don't think they even visited my catholic prep school and we still sent 4 kids there my year. Kind of got the same treatment as every other elite school.

It's an absolute fact that Brian Kelly did nothing to tap into the WCAC (so not just DeMatha... Good Counsel, Gonzaga, St. John's too). It's not that ND didn't recruit the DMV, but there was no face time or networking from Kelly. In the offseason, you will regularly see James Franklin, etc. It's a talented loaded area and frankly it's low hanging fruit considering how many coaches/teachers/families are ND fans.
