I tend to agree, it's been watered down quite a bit from a couple decades ago.

Maybe it's just the nostalgia in me as I didn't follow ND football as a kid until 2000, but I the old NBC intro and the voice of Tom Hammond is a vibe.

Also to your point about the crowd noise, they most certainly did not leave out the crowd noise back then. Watch/listen to this whole sequence, the 3rd down stuff by Brandon Hoyte followed the the epic Zibby punt return. Crowd was electric, and who could clearly hear it on TV.

Hammond....

As far as night games I think the crowd is definitely more amped and it helps drive out the "down in front" crowd like you mentioned. For obvious reasons I think the opposition plays up to it too though, case in point late games against Pitt often end up close. Early games like 2020 and 2015 we seem to crush them by 2+ scores.

I don't think that's the case.

Pitt games have been mostly close, regardless of the time of the game.

7 of the last 9 games against Pitt were decided by 1 score.

I'd be curious to know if a lot of those 7 games were late games, because the other 2 were early afternoon ones. I know a bunch of the one score games were later.

Only 2009 and 2013 were late games. The others were either noon or afternoon games.

2008: 2:30 ET
2009: 8 ET
2010: 3:30 ET
2011: 12 ET
2012: 3:30 ET
2013: 8 ET
2015: 12 ET
2018: 3:30 ET
2020: 3:30 ET

Guess it's just the fact that a 3:30 start time is going to end at 7ish when it's dark in November, especially if it's in Pittsburgh. Feels like it's often a late game cause it's typically late October or November.

Man, I hope Dre Brown has absorbed as much as he could from Bill. This feels like a huge loss unless Dre can replicate/improve on Bill's ability to find talent. Someone get to the grotto and light a candle for Dre.

They need to hire more personnel for this group. That's apparently been the biggest issue. Hopefully that's the direction they are going.

I'm curious as to which players Bill was able to identify, present to the staff, other college coaches were not aware of, and became a true diamond in the rough and bonafide player for ND?

By all accounts, Bill Rees is a quality evaluator and nice to have on the staff. I'm not sure that he was indispensable and generally ahead of the curve in his profession though. I think he can be replaced. I've always gotten Bob Elliot type of vibes from Bill Rees- a pro's pro, an asset, and perhaps somebody you'd like on staff, but nobody that has really ever been vital and essential to a championship-caliber team.

Agreed. I see it like I see the Tommy situation.

Quality guy, tough to see him gone, but far from irreplaceable.

Maybe I missed it but does anyone know who’s going to be coaching LBs? It seems to have been pushed aside for obvious reasons. Just hadn’t heard or read any updates for a replacement.

I haven’t seen any updates other than Manti being a possibility……but that was just a pie in the sky type article with no real insight. Maybe Golden could handle that aspect though since he has coached LBs before.

So Rees was handling both OC and QB coach if I’m not mistaken. Is that because of being limited on staffing numbers? If so and Golden could/does coach the LB’s that would still leave a spot for a position coach. Do we bring in an OC and a QB coach? Not sure which would be better. I guess it depends on who we get for an OC.

Laurinaitas was a GA which doesn’t count an official coaching number. Right now there is only one coaching spot available with Rees departure, his spot.

Bullough supposedly did a 3-year stint as a GA at 'bamer (the most the ncaa allows). This was preceded by a 1 year stint as a GA w/ MF at Cincinnati in '19

Now he's on to another GA stint with the Irish.

GA's, rather than analysts, can coach on the field. This is big news for ND as he will essentially be LB coach.

Is there a rule on pay/allowances for GA's, per the ncaa? Dude will be doing his FIFTH year as a GA at ND. I don't think that was supposed to be point of hiring GA's.

According to Loy, Max Bullough is expected to be hired to replace Laurinaitis
Can’t believe he’s 31, I remember his recruitment. Think we lost to MSU but he has family that played at ND (mom’s side?).

Great guy! Had several classes with him. I think his family is MSU and ND split and was on MFs defense at Cinci

Also, he'll be an analyst or maybe the new 12th field coach if the NCAA passes it.

He can't be a GA. GA's are capped at 3 years. He was a rare 4 year GA (1 at Cincy with Freeman & 3 at Bama) because GA's were given an additional Covid year like the players.

Based on what I’ve read about the Grad Asst rules….. none of this makes sense. There is a 7 year window from the later of either graduating or exhausting eligibility.

It’s assumed that he graduated in 2014 which would mean that he’s now past the 7 year window. The only thing that makes sense is that he didn’t actually graduate at that time. He was suspended for the Rose Bowl for violation of team rules. Lots of rumors at the time what it was, but it’s possible that whatever happened didn’t allow him to graduate.

Not entirely thrilled about the PED’s suspension in the NFL either.

No pay, though that might be changed this offseason.

Looks like Bullough was a GA at Cincy when Freeman was there.
