I was just glancing at the schedule and we only have one bye week this year. Is that new?

Just the way the calendar falls. only 1 in 2012 too. This year our first game is Sep5, last year was end of August. I can typically tell by how Labor Day falls.

Tsk tsk LA, you know better than this...

2007-2009, I can barely dignify with a response. Weis couldn't develop the trenches to save his bloody life, what baring does he have with Kelly's track record?

2010 was essentially all with undeveloped Weis players, so non-factor again.
2011 ...LA, are you serious? I know he was only here for 1 season, but did you blank Aaron Lynch from your memory? He was an elite pass rusher, despite him being a total head case.
2014 You start a sophomore with little to no pass rushing ability, a true freshman behind him, a recently moved OLB on the other side, a true freshman behind him, lose the only legitimately experienced edge rusher on the team and expect a good pass rush? We were worried about finding a pass rush, but hope was more of the answer than legitimate answers.

Outside of 2012, we haven't had this type of talent and experience on the edge in the last 9 years, despite the concerns. Oh yeah, and by the way, way to bring up totally irrelevant points having nothing to do with the point at hand. You're STILL bringing this garbage up? Jesus f*cking Christ...Didn't I already answer this shit on ISD? I did, now shut up about it. I'm tired of this LA. You're like the ND fan rendition of Family Guy, beating a dead horse with another dead horse.

That's right, Balki with the preseason sack...

Based on this, we'll have a fresh excuse ready to go like always when the pass rush disappoints again.

A single bye has been more the norm. Last year's double bye probably was dictated by reworking the schedule to fit in the requisite ACC games ... to fit in the ACC's overall schedule.

I'm more concerned about our starting quarterback with very little experience than I am an experienced d-line with an upgrade at coach.

actually AZ has a bye week the last week of the regular season. several conferences have 1 or so school that gets screwed like that.

seemingly every year a Pac12 gets done over like this and they take turns every year lol

yep. it's somewhat in their control though. Out of conference scheduling is really up to them. The SEC does a good job of keeping week 13 full.

True, but we also blitzed more last year than any under Diaco, and we aslo gave up tons of chunk and large gain plays because of it when we didn't get home. It worked well when we had the personnel in place the first half of the season, but the same philosophy with players not ready or incapable of performing said tasks are a major liability. We now have more untested players on the DL this year. How good are the other DL people that Tillery comes in ans wins the job? Tillery is a talent and may dominate but that really is saying something when we have other upperclassmen that he beat out.

Consider me very worried about a pass rush this year especially in BVGs system.

I agree with this completely. We don't have any elite talent, I do think BVG may be able to whip something up out of this group. If we believe ND needs elite DE talent to win a chamionship/have a good season, we are likely going to be waiting a lot longer.

If we believe depth is needed and continual rotation of good players, then I think we have hope.

I'm torn. We obviously want a pair of Tuitts or Lynch's on the outside and a couple LNIIIs or Jarrons on the inside (or Sheldons).

I think we have enough pieces that a quality coaching staff should be able to put a winning product on the field. TCU has a great defense and they don't routinely sign blue chippers. Same with MSU up until recently, now they are starting to gain traction with top-level talent.

We have enough talent on this roster to win. We have enough bodies on the DL to have a rotation and keep our guys fresh. The rest is up to the game plan and luck.

Let's hope the luck of the Irish swings in our favor this year.

I think if we get guys who fit the system, the pash rush will be fine. As stated earlier by men smarter than me.. TCU and MSU consistently puts out great pass rushes without signing elite 5 star DL talent.. They develop and put them in great positions

I think the whole "ND can't recruit pass rushers" angle is overstated. Trumbetti and Rochelle were both top recruits at their position and had great offer lists. ND can get top shelf DE talent -- the staff just needs to develop them.

Rochelle is not a pass rush DE, though. Trumbetti obviously is, but I don't think it's unfair to say ND has struggled to land and maintain that particular position recently.

Long ago were the days of John Ryan starting. We have talent. Let's just hope that a proper d-line coach will now push them over the hump.

Swing and a miss. If that's your version of a sack, you would have been a perfect DE for the Weis teams.

Who is this pass rusher you are talking about with talent and experience??? All you gave me was a list of excuses. Thanks for making my point. You ALWAYS have excuses. The pass rush might surprise people, but it is absolutely a legitimate worry (just as it was every other year it disappointed), and you have done nothing to change anyone with a rational mind's thoughts on that.

And those other points were absolutely relevant. You're the most emotional poster on this board not named Rudy89, and YOU are telling people to "R-E-L-A-X"??? All I did was give you a couple of times where you completely lost your shit, to show that of all people on this board, you probably shouldn't be telling people to "relax". I mean, just yesterday you claimed it was your "right to vent" when you foolishly called BK a mediocre coach, and now you're telling people they can't vent? So only YOU are allowed to vent? It's called being a hypocrite. It would be like me telling people not to get into arguments with people on this board lol.

Sorry John Ryan, but you're wrong on this one (again). It's a legitimate concern. Hopefully someone steps up out of the blue.

In all honesty, all you did was confirm Hollywood's post brother...... Regardless of the coach or what players we have had ready or not, underclassmen or not, 2012 was the only season in recent memory where we had a decent, not great, decent pass rush. Last year was the closest to 2012 but even that was not enough. Sure there were some high spots here and there but Diaco's system never generated the pass rush either by plan or not and QBs have not had it rough against NDs DL outside of 1/2 of 2014 and most of 2012.

As for Weis' teams, outside of Hayseed, Ethan Johnson and Fleming, I am really struggling to even come up with a defensive pass rusher that was consistently producing.

Actually, not. The question wasn't what year did we have a great pass rush. It was about fans worrying about it, and something better coming through.

So anyone bringing up the Weis years, is obvious obfuscation of a point by diluted logic and presbyopic attention to the point of the conversation. So throw them out.

So in five completed years :

2010 through 2012 were building years, 2010 being Kelly's first year, which showed a marked improvement on anything Weis or his defensive ying-yangs put on the field!

2013 - don't know where you guys were, but there were little worries expressed with Nix, and Tuitt returning, and a change to a 4-3 (about 40 percent of the time.) I remember most people bitching that year about a passive defense, and sure people noted that Stephon was pudgy, but that was it.

Who watched football in 2014? Yes people were worried preseason, but we had some young guys do pretty damned well for playing with little or no experience. And pull out our really starter deficient games, and the defense didn't actually do terribly. At the beginning of the season, BVG said that he would have to get pressure with special packages and stunts, so anyone who worried about where it would come from or spent any time worrying about it was wasting time!

Better time spent taking about how defensive ends developed; Lewis-Moore, Tuitt, Rochell, Trumbetti, etc. I think these guys all got to a consistently high level, for where they started from. Lynch, did his thing and was gifted but basically uncoachable.

This was what spawned the whole brouhaha :

Aloha said, "We lack an elite pass rusher and BVGs scheme calls many blitzes that only accomplish taking guys out of the secondary levels......too similar to tenuta for comfort." And ,Balki said, "This has been discussed. BVG is nothing anywhere near like Tenuta. BVG doesn't blitz as often and his packages are much more subtle and less predictable. Needless to say, he's not going to bring the house every down like Tenuta did. As for elite pass rushers, I think we were hoping the same thing in 2012. We had lost our only legitimate elite pass rusher in Aaron Lynch, and we were hoping Tuitt and Shembo could develop into good ones. They did. Gotta be patient."

For all the people that want to see gloom and doom, want to bully or misrepresent what a poster said :

Do you really want to go down this road bogs? I've completely left you alone. You should probably do the same.

It's not "doom and gloom" to be concerned about the pass rush. Not at all. You all said the same thing in 2013, when you claimed we had "8 players that were potentially elite defensive ends!!!!!" LOL. How did that work out? How long did you argue and argue and argue that Tony Springmann and Kona Schwenke and Ishaq Williams were going to kill it for us that year? How many sacks did they have that year between them? Have you ever come out and say, "Dang, you guys were right. My bad." Nope, like Sean44, nothing but more excuses.

And here was your exact quote:

I will bet, with the presser, and a few things I have heard, that this year's d-line buries last years in terms of performance. Louis and Sheldon are going to be impossible to handle, and no one will see Stephon or Prince. They will just be there yesterday, the day before they started; that fast. Add Jarron, Ishaq, Springman, Utupo, Houndshell, and Stocton and I think we are going to have close to a dozen that can play, eight elite.

Embarrassingly brutal.

It's funny how the guy telling people to "RELAX" is now being "bullied". The most emotional poster on the board tells people to relax, and I'm the bully? Gotta love it. Like you did last week, I look forward to you flipping out again for no reason.

Didn't Aaron Lynch only have 5 sacks?

*** 5.5 sacks and 7 TFL. Great for a freshman. If Trumbetti does exactly that this year, most will say he had a "nice" season. Lynch's '11 season is about 1/3 of what Joey Bosa did last year.

Fantastic for a freshman. But not good enough as a team, when the guys around you aren't performing at the same level. Not so mention the penalties and his blatant disregard for assignment football, which teams exploited later in the year (see: USC).

Trumbetti has to have at least 3.5 sacks this year, assuming healthy. He's one of the few I truly project as being a high caliber player.

Splitting time with Okwara will be hard for him to put up big numbers but I'd like to see more than that. 6 sacks and 10+ TFL's is where my numbers would be.

I'm not sure he'll get to 6, but I agree that he needs to show better than 3.5. It sucks that Jones went down, because his taking up double teams all year could have been just what the doctor ordered for Trumbetti to break out.

a good secondary makes a good d-line and vice versa...

I think our D does fine this year but I do worry about the option teams we play(navy, esp Ga Tech) could be very problematic for us.

Yeah, but a good DL can do a heck of a lot better job of making the 2ndary look good than the other way around. Our 2012 DBs were no all stars. True freshman in Russel, Jackson, and Zeke Motta who ran like a 4.8.

I'd take the strength in the DL over DB all day. But I hope you're right this year.

I'm not sold on Bosa. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but he's not as great as everyone thinks. Look at his stats vs. decent teams last year (which are hard to find on OSU's schedule), he disappears. He racked up 6.5 of those sacks in three consecutive weeks against Rutgets, PSU, and Illinois (who won a collective 8 Big Ten games and all finished below .500 in the conference).

Would I take him? Yep. Would I trade someone like Lynch, Tuitt, or even Day? Eh, I don't know. I'm just not a big believer that he can play well against good competition. And frankly there's nothing to prove me wrong yet.
