Doesnt Jacksonville have a submarine fleet stationed there? I am pretty sure the subs that were stationed in Charleston Navy Base and Naval Weapons Station/SPAWAR were sent to Jacksonville.

It's at Kings Bay, GA is less than 40 miles from Jacksonville.

Also, most of the people from the base live in Fernandina Beach area. So only 20-30 miles from the stadium.

Seems like Cleveland, Chicago, San Diego, San Fran would be logical locales for Navy games, and all offer recruiting bonus. Wish Houston and/or New Orleans could be considered for either Navy or Shamrock.

While putting the finishing touches of our 160-page, full glossy 2016 Football Preview in June, we were granted an exclusive one-on-one with head coach Brian Kelly specifically for that publication.

We asked 10 pertinent questions about the offense, 10 on defense and also had a chance to delve into some other topics, including his thoughts on coaching in the NFL in the future and about dealing with academics at the University. Here are a few excerpts:

Question: There is a popular perception that you have become frustrated with the limits here and the first opportunity you get after another good season, comparable to 2012, you will bolt for a potential NFL job. What is your response?

BGI/Rivals.com

Brian Kelly addressed numerous topics about his past, present and future as Notre Dame's coach.
Kelly: "I don't know how to stop that other than to say there's no other place, first of all, in college that I would want to coach. No. 2, I get to pick the players that play for me, I get to negotiate the contracts. I've got the salary cap, I've got all that. In the NFL, you don't get to do any of that. Look what Chip Kelly's going through. He tries to control all that and he gets killed for it. I can do all that here at Notre Dame.

"…Bill Belichick gets control over that but he's won [four] Super Bowls. I needed to know that to make sure I wanted to do what I was doing. After seeing that and after talking to a number of guys that I know in the NFL, it's crazy."

Can this team take on the identity you had versus LSU where you rushed for 263 yards and emphasized physicality?

"It's taken us a while to build the depth necessary to pound the football. We haven't had that, and we've got that now. We've built this to get back to being physical. …What I feel we have to be able to do is the quarterback has to be part of our running game. If the quarterback is part of the running game, we will be one of the top rushing offenses.

"…"The No. 1 personnel grouping today in college football and the NFL is 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, three receivers]. You can't pound the football like Notre Dame pounded it 20 years ago. There's not a fullback on the field. It's not built that way. So how are you going to do it?

"You can do it with the quarterback. If you have a quarterback that is central to the running game like at Ohio State or Oregon, the teams that are rushing for a lot, they're including the quarterback as runners. That's where we think our edge is this year. The quarterback is going to be central to the running game, which is going to open up everything else for us."

Other topics addressed on offense included tempo, whether quarterback Malik Zaire's inexperience will help or inhibit tempo, where he needs to improve as a passer, the progress of his backups and how the offense might need to change with them, and much more.

Defensively, Kelly addresses some potential shifting of personnel along the front seven to aid the pass rush, what KeiVarae Russell's return has done in elevating the summer workouts alone, and whether he thought coordinator Brian VanGorder's new NFL-style scheme was too complex last year for college players.

We asked Kelly what he defined as wanting to get to the "next level" when he hired VanGorder.

"The defense we played in 2012 was exposed in the championship game," he said. "It was all based upon that premise. Everything that we've done has been based upon getting to the national championship game — and then what we had to do at this program to get to the next level. One answer was more depth in our football program. We were woefully inadequate with depth on the offensive line, defensive line and then a few other position groups. We weren't there yet [in 2012].

"Defensively, we were too vanilla. If you had any time to scout us — we had two defensive calls, we had issues, we had no situational substitution groups. So that was the next level. We were going to change personnel groups and get into all those things anyway, and we were starting to evolve to it when we got to Brian. That's the next level for us defensively, and having the ability and depth to do it." - See more at: https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1782366#sthash.sAjCQLOT.dpuf

Interesting he would admit that about 2012, but it was pretty apparent watching them play that they did the same things over and over defensively and got away with it due to the strong DL.

Sub fleet I Kings Bay, Georgia. Not far from JAX. I think it is 30 or 40 miles away.

Edit: BGIF already mentioned this.

Good stuff on Kelly interview and many many eerie little comparisons to the '88 season keep popping up. Its the time of year when we think about these things ( not much else going on )that are common to both seasons--the latest--'88 MLB All Star game was played in Cinncinnati.

I think playing Texas #1 is great luck... When we announced the game I was worried to play Texas without a warm up, but the way this team is stacked... The team will be up for Texas in a big way

And Texas for us. This is a chance for them to take a giant leap in trying to return to their former years. I'm hoping for a blowout and I think we will win, but it won't be easy.

I love Charlie Strong and was disappointed when Texas snatched him up, but I really doubt that Texas will have the talent/experience to hang with ND in week 1. Texas will be good by the end of the year; I'm just not so sure that they will be in week 1.

Not sure they will have the talent either, but the emotions of opening up against the Irish at the Mecca might carry them a long way.

I remember doing a big write up for fun prior to another Notre Dame season where I listed the stunning similarity between the upcoming season and squad for Notre Dame and the 88 season and squad... the list was long and it got a lot of peoples here and on other sites all percolated... the season and squad I was comparing...??

Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly says coaching in NFL is a crazy thought | CollegeFootballTalk

I saw this posted on the 247 forums. We are all aware of the NFL rumors, especially from a few years ago. Maybe I'm being naive on this topic, but I believe that BK has decided that it's in his best interest to remain at ND until he either decides to retire or is shown the door. In the former case, I could see that being around 2020-2022. In the latter, there are so many variables, but the most pressing would be the team's performance on the field.

If I recall correctly, his contract currently runs through the 2016 season. If the team does as well as anticipated this year, I'd like to see Swarbrick negotiate another extension in the off-season.

I just cannot see BK being successful at the pro level, although I guess I could see him making a go of it... he's a very good college guy, stick to what you know coach.

I don't think people are looking closely at the one quote.

I don’t know how to stop that other than to say there’s no other place, first of all, in college that I would want to coach,”

I've seen a couple article headlines now that make it seem like Kelly said this:

no other place that I would want to coach

Gotta watch that BK, he is a true politician.

You don't get to being the head coach of Notre Dame unless you are psychotically competitive. Guys like that don't usually want to stop at the "second tier" of a sport.

(I say this as a guy who thinks the college game is a more unique and schematically diverse on the whole, but the sheer complexity of an NFL playbook dwarfs college and I recognize that.)
