Coming from a BYU student and avid BYU hater, I may be biased. But I've watched enough of their games and been around the athletes themselves to know they are about a 50-60 range team in the country. Garbage may have been a strong word, but ND would win by at least 30 if they played BYU or Wisconsin imo.

Yup, by advanced stats BYU is 76th in the country.

The best team Wisconsin has beaten this year is Iowa, who ranks 18th in advanced stats and is a PERFECT matchup for the Badgers.

New Mexico 74th.
Nebraska 75th.
Western Kentucky 98th.

So Wisconsin has played a bunch of teams that are bottom of the barrel, one decent team (Iowa), one good team (Michigan), and they're 4-2. How are they even ranked? USC is far more deserving of being ranked than Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a total fraud because their vanilla run-straight-ahead offense works against unathletic, crappy teams. They will get worked by any team with a run defense, or any team that can throw the ball worth half a damn.

It was quite incredible to see that is literally all they have. Even down big in the 4th they were running the ball over and over again!

So where would you rank Pitt, Vandy and Ball State in this then???

Also, you go to BYU but hate them???

Lol, let me be clear, I love the school, my family is devoutly Mormon but my dad got his masters at ND in 93 and we lived 30 minutes from campus so we all support ND. But going to church listening to every other Mormon talk about how great BYU is and how ND is overrated and that BYU is better obviously rubbed me the wrong way. So I grew disdain for that reason. What's funny is both my brother and I played varsity sports at BYU (me baseball and my brother rugby) yet we (my family) still don't support BYU sports haha. I can go on and on about my reasoning as to why I don't like the athletics, but this isn't the time or place.

And honestly Ball St is a wash because we are a different team then we were then. Vandy would give BYU a run for their money for sure. In a set of 10 games I bet they beat BYU 3 or 4 times at least. Pitt isn't good, but they threw everything they had at ND and outside of 2 special teams blunders, the game wouldn't have been as close. Idk, I just don't think that BYU is very good, (although they just made their obvious QB change so they might be trending up) and ergo, Wisconsin isn't that good.

UGA isn’t going to win out, LSU isn’t going to win out, Texas maybe, Oklahoma don’t have a good enough schedule compared to ND, Michigan ain’t beating ohio state

We'll see. Lot of FB to left to play out.
At this point, I think Bama, Clemson, and OSU will all win out. That leaves one spot. IMO, UCF if undefeated goes before a one loss ND. They are already ahead of in advanced stats.

It will be interesting when week 10 rolls around and we get the first CFP rankings. Regardless, clean slate UCF will be ranked better than current AP and Coaches if still undefeated.

If our OL doesn't get it together, and if we can't get a vertical passing attack going, won't matter much anyway.

If we are undefeated and UCF is also, 0% chance they even get past a 2 loss Stanford let alone us. They aren't a power 5 school. This Is hardly a debatable condition.

Group of 5 has their own Heisman according to some.

Michigan still has to play Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State (Sparty and the Buckeyes on the road). Does anyone honestly believe they’re going to win all three of those games?

We can only hope they beat MSU, PSU and give OSU a hell of a fight but lose. OSU will lose. PSU was over-rated hence MSU beating them rather handily,... If ya watched the game then MSU should beat everyone else on their schedule according to how great a loss PSU's was to OSU, in a white-out at home.

Michigan State won handily? 21-17 is winning handily? Did you watch the game? They trailed most of the game, with Michigan State only taking the lead with 19 seconds left in the game.

I hope Michigan loses all three. If ND wins out, we’ll be in.

Hardly debatable? It's very debatable.
First of all, I said undefeated UCF over a 1 loss ND (not no loss). UCF would not get in over any undefeated power 5 team. To say they wouldn't get in over a 2 loss Stanford is silly though.

Things are very different this year for UCF's chances.
Last year, UCF was unranked to start, and didn't hit the top 25 until week 6. They also started the CFP as #18. They ended up being #6 in the final rankings. They also went on to beat Auburn (SEC W champs), which beat not one, but two #1 teams last year. That itself changed perception to a lot of folks about UCF in general.

This year, they were in the top ten by week 6. They will be in the top 10 when the CFP rankings come out. They also beat Pitt by 31. They are also ahead of us in advanced stats, and would be much further ahead of us (and a lot of other teams) if they win out, and we drop one. If things break the right way for them, they could face two teams in the top 25 (Cincy or USF, and Houston in the CC) at the end of the season.

Not saying they make it in before any one loss big time name, but they could. And it is, very debatable.

I’d bet money a 1 loss ND gets in over a zero loss UCF. uCF’s best win would be who exactly? ND has the far superior schedule

I agree... there’s hardly a chance UCF gets in (short of every blue boood having either 2 losses or just one bad loss) over ND or any other name program. They choose to play nobody out of conference and their “big” wins pale in comparison to numerous name-brand schools. Point is there are reasons to not choose them, and it’s my belief the committee will absolutely find a more “deserving” team. I say this admitting they may actually deserve to get in given specific circumstances, but I just can’t see them getting it.

It's their conference that's the issue, not the OoC scheduling. In the last 5 years they've had pretty decent teams from the B10 (Mich, PennSt, OSU), PAC (Stanf), ACC (Lou, GT, NC), SEC (SC, Miz). Minimum 2 per year.

Their P5 opponents this year are UNC (postponed for weathr) and (gulp) Pittsburgh. Not exactly murderer's row. Though if they get through Cincy and USF they could have a ranked win or two under their belt.

That’s what I was driving at.... No flipping way they get in over a one loss blue blood with that conference slate and out of conference (this year specifically). If they had one or two marquee wins over highly ranked name brand teams, then and only then (maybe) they’d have a shot.

I’m not implying it’s fair or that I totally agree... it just is

This is their worst year in the last 5 IMO, but like I said, they have a history of scheduling P5s, some top 10 programs. And as it's been said on this very board, you never know what you are going to get scheduling 4-5 years (or more) out.

Who knew FSU would be trash. Who would have though only one of our scheduled opponents would be ranked in the top 25? Hell, even Michigan could drop 3 of its remaining games (@MSU, PSU, @OSU) and be unranked by end of season with 4 losses.

It would not be crazy for UCF to play ranked Cinci and/or USF teams. Houston could also easily be ranked end of season for a CC match up. CFP will also look at games with like opponents (Pitt and Navy), so far, advantage UCF on that one.

We spent all but about 2 minutes of the previous 6 games either tied or in the lead.

We spent about 54+ minutes either tied or trailing in the Pitt game.

Interesting if they could normalize that data to opponents faced (i.e. SOS). Bama's is pitiful.

Just an FYI on some defensive rankings. There are 65 power 5 teams. Of those teams, ND ranks...

Points Per Game - 12th
Yards Per Play - 6th
Yards Per Game - 14th
Yards Per Rush Attempt - 21st
Yards Per Pass Attempt - 4th
Margin of Victory - 8th

Pretty awesome stuff. Navy game didn't help the rushing stats, but Notre Dame is essentially running out a top ten defense right now which is awesome. Hats of to Clark Lea for his work along with Elston, Joseph, and Lyght. Recruiting is also picking up on defense which should allow this defense to be sustainable which will in turn help ND immensely towards competing for championships.
