Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses

This is insane. Not far from me, a construction crew was working on the bridge and 7 are missing, they estimate 20 vehicles were on it when the collapse happened. If this would have happened during the day it would have been 100x worse. This definitely going to slow the massive shipping traffic out of there.

The video is almost unbelievable. During a PC this morning, officials said they had already rescued two people. One was in critical condition while the other must have been unhurt as they refused treatment. Prayers to all involved.

Pretty bad, this is most definitely going to go from a rescue mission to a recovery mission pretty quickly.

The scariest. Hopeful prayers

Another reason I have damn near panic attacks driving over bridges

Pretty wild that this bridge didn't have dolphins but the nearby power lines did.

Water temps are about 50 degrees. 8 hours into the incident no one is surviving this if they are still in the water. They are still putting drivers in the water for now. I would imagine that might stop since the tide will be coming in. Can’t take the chance of the debris moving with the increased tide.

Just awful.

With the tides being what they are, and the depth of that channel, I can't imagine it'll be a search and rescue after 12 PM.

Are there harbor pilots in Baltimore? Or do the ship captains operate in port?

I saw an article that said they had harbor pilots, but the boat lost power and thus hit the bridge pier without control. They sent a mayday signal ahead of the crash which supposedly allowed for some traffic to actually be stopped before entering the bridge.

That's pretty clear from the video. You can see the accident here (skip to 9:52:50).

Pretty clear the vessel loses power and gets pulled into the bridge by the tides.

Perhaps we shouldn't allow non-serious people to oversee complex systems just because they check a diversity box.

Obviously Pete didn't wreck the ship, but this comment is completely asinine and unacceptable. And we're having planes emergency land every day it seems, trains derailing all over the place, supply chain is wrecked.

Dude is a pandering moron.

Hope that shipping company has some decent insurance……they are going to be liable for some extensive damage and loss of life.

I think it's going to be more complicated than that.

"The ship management company, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, reported to MPA that just prior to the incident, the vessel, Dali had experienced momentary loss of propulsion," the statement from MPA said. "As a result, it was unable to maintain the desired heading and collided with the Francis Scott Key bridge."

The crew on the ship issued a "mayday" call before it collided with the bridge, per the Maryland governor.

did he really just say thst or is it an earlier quote? If he just said that then shame on him. If that is an earlier quote, shame on you for suggesting this is his response...

It was early in his tenure as Transportation Secretary. It has nothing to do with the current accident. To somehow try and say that this incident could've been prevented if he wasn't worrying about racist bridges is beyond ludicrous.

Yeah, that quote is from 2021 and it is in reference to when the highway system was built. It's majorly disingenuous to bring it up now and try and make this disaster into a political conversation..

It's irrelevant when he said this - he said it about a bridge as Secretary of Transportation.

It takes a pandering idiot to think a bridge is racist in 2015, 2020, 2024, etc. This is how this many thinks, and on official record. He's not a serious person.

Sometimes you just need to know when to shut the fuck up. When posters with the same political views as you think you’re out of line, then maybe that time is now.

Right... So because he mentioned, a few years ago, that redlining and racist principles existed in construction (which they did), means somehow he is responsible for this and his "incompetence" led to anything happening here EVEN FUCKING REMOTELY

This is the stuff why people can't stand you dude.

This quote, proven false in relation to Robert Moses constructing bridges too low to prevent buses from bringing certain people to beaches has absolutely nothing to do with a cargo ship striking a bridge support causing catastrophic collapse. Could we please keep the conspiracies and politics out of this at least until the bodies are recovered?

No - it just means he's a non-serious person and shouldn't be in charge of anything at the national level. We have zero standards these days.

He's our leader in transportation, and he thinks bridges can be racist. Not behind the scenes, loudly and proudly. He's a clown.
