I actually want him to get atleast a one game suspension. This is something very serious not to mention how ND haters would react. If he doesnt get a suspension he better do a **** load of community service.

Meh.

I'd actually be pretty upset with the university if Floyd gets zero suspension.

Depends..... if he has to do a bunch of stuff (community service, etc.) then I am totally OK with it.

What is the point of missing games? That it is punitive? Makes the guy feel bad? Isn't that what the civil penalties for breaking the law and getting a DUI are for?

My guess... if this tweet turns out to be true... is that Coach Kelly adds a game or two suspension of his own.

I'm in this boat. What does sitting out one football game accomplish? I think that it would be far more effective punishment to give him community service. He didn't commit a felony, let the courts do the punishing.

I don't understand this at all, honestly. I posted this in the other Floyd thread, and rather than retype it, I'll just quote myself. I stand by this:

If higher standards means not employing bagmen, fine. If it means callously hammering a kid over a mistake, count me out. Once a kid is in your family, you protect the kid. My loyalty in this situation would be Michael, not some abstract idea of "higher standards." You want kids to want to play in your program, you stand by the kid when they are going through a difficult time.

My punishment for Floyd: time served (no spring ball), 50 hours community service to be completed before he puts pads on again, mandatory AA/counselling, and a zero tolerance approach going forward.

Explain to me how suspending Michael for a game or two would be better than my proposed punishment. I think suspending him would be worse for everyone: the individual, his team and his university as a whole. Seems draconian.

On another note, I trust Arnold here. I know someone here was busting his chops about dropping Michael's name in a tweet just so people would pay attention, but Arnold is from the same town as Floyd and usually is spot on when Michael is the subject.

Keep in mind Res Life doesn't decide suspensions for individual games, their decision is whether to suspend him for a semester or not.

Given the history of Res Life matters, I would be very surprised if nothing comes more of this - at least in terms of what we know of here. I just hope he learns his lesson either way. The outcome could have been much, much worse.

Hello. He's already suspended from Spring Football, something stronger than Alabama, Auburn, USC or the usual probaters would do.

The question was not if ResLife would impose a suspension but rather when, would it be for the current semester or the next one. I'm guessing they were comfortable with the current semester and considered, "time served" and even more so that Floyd promptly accepted responsibility for his actions and is making efforts on his own to overcome his past behavior.

Agree 1000% (yes, that extra zero was intentional)

This makes sense.

He needs to be on probation and do a bunch of community service and more importantly don't be an idiot again. Please. I don't know if I trust him to not fuck up again.

I would. And everyone else on the team helping him not too. I think the levity of the situation has probably hit him hard. We should see the focused, prepared team leader Brian Kelly called him out to be from now on.

I disagree completely. He effed up in a MAJOR way. Drinking and driving is no joke. I have a DUI; I was stupid and deserved every punishment I got and even more. He already had a couple of minor alcohol-related run-ins with the law, and yet he still got in the car and blew a friggin .19 (which is really hammered). While I'm really happy that Res-Life (if true) has stepped out of it, I would have no problem with Kelly suspending him for 2 games. Hell, I thought he'd get suspended for 4 games.

I'd take your punishments and add games to it, and not feel bad at all. This isn't SC, this isn't the SEC. Suspending the individual isn't hurting...HE hurt himself. Draconian is suspending him for the season; suspending him for a few games isn't draconian, it's punishing the young making some horrible choices. You don't want to be suspended? Then call a friggin' taxi!!!

Believe me, I'll be at one of the first 3 games, and I'd love to see Floyd play. But if he doesn't, I won't blame anybody but Mr. Floyd himself.

To play Devil's advocate here, isn't that what the civil penalties for DUI's are designed for? I feel like if there is already a legal system designed to be punitive for DUI's... football-related punishment just to be punitive and teach a lesson is a bit of a double dip.

This is his 2nd run in with the law in as many years. This is also the same fanbase that rips other schools for looking the other way in similar situations. Also started threads about Jalen Rose and a Michigan player after the Michael Floyd situation.

I feel he should get at least a couple games. Now i am happy that he is not out for the year (or even most of it) but he should serve a suspension. Remember this is Notre Dame, not USC.

I would also add that he is getting punished by ResLife per the Du Lac. So people that want games added are asking for.

1) Civil penalties and fines
2) School suspensions per Du Lac
3) Additional football suspension

I find that draconian. Most universities dont get past #1. Our "inspirational peers" might get to their version of #2. Only at ND would fans demand #3.

I don't know about Indiana, but in Florida it's one year for the first offence, with chance to get the drive to work license thing in 6 months.

I know of two opponents on our 2011 schedule who take it far past ND.

In response to IrishLax's devil's advocate, why have ResLife at all?

As said, this isn't like he blew an .09 after a couple drinks. To get .19 on a 230 pound man is something that takes some effort. While I found Ian Williams' comments well-written, I disagreed with the "accident". One doesn't get to .19 on accident.

I think a season would be draconian although not entirely unreasonable. No games would be a sham. I suspect Kelly will find the right middle ground.
