Harbaugh went ape yesterday too with an official. Doesn't matter. Won't hear about any of it in the "news". Doesn't fit the anti-ND narrative.
Harbaugh's rant was on the ESPN front page all day yesterday. If we don't hear any more about it, it's because they won the game.

ND winning or losing has NOTHING to do with the purple-faced Kelly bullshit we had to endure for YEARS. We get it - you work for ESPN.

Harbaugh's rant will be spun to portray how passionate he is.....

Have no problem with what McElwain did. New coach laying down the law. Kid did the throat slit gesture after TD and got penalty. Saban and Meyer both would have ripped him a new one.

The media are such pu$$ies. It's freaking football. There should be a lot of yelling all the time. Go watch ballet if you don't like it.

Most people found Harbaugh's rant to be amusing. Most college football reporters and analysts are so gung-ho on him being back coaching in college that he can get away with anything right now and receive no backlash. Also, Harbaugh is a known commodity, and his sideline blowups have been seen for years before arriving at Michigan. Kelly was still somewhat of an unknown nationally, he could have gone purple face every game at Cincy or Central Michigan for all anyone knew, but I think it was eye-opening to see him do it on NBC during a meltdown of a game.

Yell, scream, and get in their face for doing dumb stuff.

This is where I'm at with it, it's football if you find it offensive I hear fencing is in need of soft fans and players!

You know what, I think that there is a time and a place for this kind of reaction, but not for something as silly as this. If a kid spears the ref like in Texas, or slams an opponents head into his helmet a la Pacman yesterday, then cool, tear into that ass. I get it, it hurts the team and costs a few yards. Maybe bench the kid or humiliate him in practice by making him apologize to them or run or whatever. But to lose your shit like that is kind of over the top. It's a highly charged and emotional game, but hell, it's not like they are invading Normandy. Sometimes I think we forget that this is supposed to be fun, and this kind of stuff reminds me to take a step back when I start taking it too seriously.

I was annoyed by the constant purple-faced-Kelly attention, but I also am not as convinced as you are the whole rest of the world sees and does everything based on how it relates to Notre Dame.

Is simulating the severing of a throat and the imagery of said gesture really something done in the name of fun? It's quite more intense than a chest bump or shushing the crowd IMO. Maybe the kids should remember it is supposed to be fun and they won't have to feel the necessity to mimic murdering somebody.

If it was my kid he wouldn't sit down for a month of Sundays. I don't care what age he is.

This, although I've also seen opposing fan bases castrate coaches like BK and Muschamp that have gotten into player's faces in the past, and many of their own coaches have gone into their own tirades so just about no one is immune to it. At the end of the day it is football, some players respond differently to a fired up head coach, and some others don't. I don't think we ever really saw Kelly light into Golson while he was here, he probably knew that the fragile ego couldn't handle it.

Idk, that seems a little over the top to me when the context of that is really just that "it's over" or "they are finished." Your my boy blue, but I'm gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.

Yeah the throat thing is stupid to me. It's pretty commonly understood to be playful/not ACTUALLY murdery.

In addition to Cack's point, it's simply something the kid knows is wrong, and is selfish. I'm sure the coaches have been clear about after-play gestures, showboating, etc.. When a kid does something on an individual level that can cost the team, it's just simply unacceptable and deserves a good yell. I'd have preferred he not cussed at him, but a good yelling was totally needed.

No, that's totally fine. I get that it is against the rules and you guys are right about it being a selfish act. I just think that the coach acted ridiculously. Again, it's just a game. I understand he let his team down, but he's a kid playing a game. When I was in the Air Force I got yelled at like that, but I understood the consequences of not doing things a certain way, however the military is not a game. These are kids from all different backgrounds, I am not sure that screaming at them on national tv in a humiliating fashion is the answer to correct such a thing. Now if he is a soldier and ignores his LOAC training, then by all means chew that ass!

AMEN...Sometimes the shot over the bow includes everything you can muster...including a little public humiliation. Seriously...no one ever heard the Florida Program is/was/can be out of hand??? Would it make everyone happier to have the kid benched or suspended??? Personally, I'd rather have my ass kicked on TV than sit.

And let me add this. Can anyone name someone who looks at the likes of Bomani Jones and says...He helped shape me as a man. I bet there are 100+ such men who'd sincerely say that about Mcelwain...so while Jones may think the "antics" distasteful, I'd take that coach DAMNED "seriously", shut my pie hole, and learn something. And I'd start taking that Florida program seriously...He will own Florida in short order, and be back in the SEC discussion within 3-4.

Not a dig, but surprised you have that attitude being a military man.
Regarding if it was a corrective action, I bet the kid gets it loud and clear now, and will be better for it. What I did like, was the kid took the yelling, and kept his mouth shut like a soldier :)

PS. Thank you for your service!!

Yeah, I think I have just gotten soft since I had my first kid lol. I agree with you about him taking the ass chewing like a man though. Oh and no need to thank me brother, that was the most amazing time of my life! Worked my ass off, played even harder! Got to go to 6 different countries, though three of them sucked ass, were hot as hell, and there was nothing but sand and assholes that hated us, but even then, I still enjoyed it lol.

There most certainly is a need to thank you, and everyone else that puts on a uniform! Reps for the humbleness though lol.

I disagree its just a game. If players don't act right makes the coach look bad could cost him his job. If this player did this against a good team might have hurt him and cost them the game. I know I am not tell you anything but this is a job for the coach and he has to put his foot down or someone will do it to him.

That's a fair point, but does this situation merit that type of reaction? Yeah if this was 4 kids at Bama beating the shit out of another student on campus and stealing from them, then yeah get after em. I just think this was extreme for a game. He is a millionaire coach of kids, I don't feel bad for him. For the record, I wasn't thrilled with purple faced Kelly either. I want my team to win, but I want them to do so with class and grace. Teachers can find a better way than yelling and public humiliation.

I wonder what Bomani Jones would be saying about a player that got a little "bag man" love, or if he was signing thousands of pieces of sequenced paraphernalia, or he found out he really wasn't writing those papers. Point is we can look away or gloss over all kinds of systemic abuses and corruption, but a coach yelling at his player is the "crap" that these talking heads get on their high horse over for a few days.

I also agree with your take here. Just because these kids are young, it does not give them free reign to do whatever they want like take money, abuse women etc, and these guys on tv talking about it always seem to go over the top to make them feel better about themselves. Kind of sad really.

Yeah...no...it's not playful when people do it in sporting events. TJ Yeldon wasn't imitating Wednesday Adams or Loony Tune characters. He is simulating ending someone silently and bloody. It's also very common place in football, MMA, ...

whatever. It just my opinion and my kid will get his ass torn up if I ever see that.
