Wow. Fuck that guy.

Who could ever imagine something like this happening? Sad twist of fate that the impenetrable cockpit doors to prevent hijackings and death were a contributing factor in this. Now I imagine you'll see pilots given some sort of override key as a safeguard to getting locked out.

Also, there is going to be one hell of a lawsuit against the airline for their pilot committing mass murder.

I just wrote about this in my journalism class. How the hell does something like this happen? What kind of screening procedures are in place for the hiring process of a pilot in this the terrorism age? Just horrible, my prayers to the families that lost ther loved ones. We are getting to a point where flying is just not a good way to travel anymore. Unbelievable.

Apparently this couldn't happen in the US because there's a rule that the leaving pilot needs to be replaced by another member of the flight staff. I'd expect that to become the new global standard.

Smart, so that you've always got redundancy of two people in the cockpit at all times. I guess there are people with much better foresight than me (well, maybe they never anticipated this kind of thing, but at least planning for something happening to a lone pilot).

The 1997 Silk Air and 1999 Egypt Air crashes were also pilot suicide incidents. There have been others. I strongly suspect that the disappearance of Malaysia 370 is also a deliberate act.

Did any more info about the Malaysia pilot come out? I remember he didn't seem like the type. Was an avid pilot, teacher, had a YouTube series about safety, no recent tragedy, etc.

I was surprised to learn that pilots aren't given psychological evaluations (well at least for Lufthansa and its subsidiaries). I bet that is something that also changes in the future.

That's right. Plus, there is a code that can be used to get back into the cockpit if locked out. However, that code is useless if someone else in the cockpit is manually preventing you from getting in, which it sounds like was the case here.

My father had a maxim regarding unexpected death, "When your time comes, your time comes. Just don't be in a plane when the pilot's time comes."

That is incredibly informative and a relief to know. It should absolutely be implemented as the global standard.

I haven't heard anyone object to the fact that the other pilot left the cockpit in flight. That is more than just a little odd to me as well.

Can pilots go to the bathroom in the cockpit? I'm learning in this thread just how little I know about commercial planes.

Not really, bathroom breaks are needed sometimes. If it was during take-off or landing, I would agree.

As said above bathroom breaks. I've been on planes in the US where the pilot leaves and the head flight attendant goes into the cockpit with the other pilot. Then when they come back they knock or use the phone to call into the cockpit for admittance.

In this particular incident it had to be terrible for the passengers to witness the pilot trying to get into the cockpit and feel that they were descending for 8 minutes. Awful.

It don't know. I'm guessing probably not ... at least without really irritating the co-pilot. :)My mom always made me go to the bathroom before we went anywhere in the car, so if I was a pilot, I'd have been readly for the long haul.

I don't know much about commercial aircraft but when I was in the Air Force we would do refueling called "Hot Pits" wich just entailed F-16's rolling up and leaving the engine running and we would hook up, gas em', and they would roll out. This one pilot would always hold up his piss bag and give me a thumbs up. I guess that is more of a circumstance in the nature of a fighter plane, but I always thought that was strange of him yet funny at the same time.

Considering that I'm in an airport right now, I think I'll choose to not read the article.

I have.never flown and probably never will. You would have to give me some of that orange juice that the A team gave B.A. Barracus to get him on a plane.

I find this new information incredibly unsettling...to me, this is akin to the Sandy Hook massacre. You take a bunch of people who are completely vulnerable and basically kill them execution style. I can only imagine how scared they must be and how absolutely distraught their families must be. They say flying is the safest form of travel but hearing stories like this - how so many lives can be put into the hands of other human beings who are human and make errors/have the ability to be mentally unstable/etc is incredibly disturbing.

Prosecutor: German co-pilot hid illness from employer

Looks like the co-pilot suffered from depression.

The article you linked disagrees. See the quote from your link, below.

Depression was speculated by reporters. As of 4 pm ET it is being reported that it is NOT known whether his illness was mental or physical.

The statement did not disclose the nature of Lubitz's illness, although German media outlets reported he may have suffered from depression. Dusseldorf University clinic said Lubitz went to the facility in February and March, most recently on March 10, for diagnosis but denied he was treated there for depression, Sky News
.
