Ummmmm, what happened to the island?

But seriously, thats pretty incredible.

The sands making up the barrier islands along the coast are transported from north to south by the currents where they are typically deposited on the existing islands naturally replenishing themselves. Once Charleston constructed the jetties to open up the harbor to traffic, sand collects on the north side of the jetty wall and no sand makes it to the south side of the jetty, so all the barrier islands south of the jetty disappear without any new sands being deposited.

We have to pay to haul sand in and physically "replenish" the beaches south of the jetty almost every ten years so the existing homes are not standing on open ocean water.
Morris Island is kind of inconsequential and they just let that island go ( but they are spending millions of dollars to keep the lighthouse structurally sound in open ocean water). This is the same island that Ft. Wagner was on (from the movie Glory).

This might be a dumb question, but couldn't they just shorten the length the north and south jetty extend into the harbor? Or is it one of those things where its too late, and not possible to adjust the jetty?

As far as I know, from an engineering perspective, the jetties have to extend a certain amount out of the harbor to allow the river water into the ocean but also to keep the harbor deep enough for the ships to enter. They were built over 100 years ago. I have not heard of redesigning them. They are too massive at this point to demolish.

You can see hear how far out they extend.

They are 2.5-3 miles long and we lose 6 feet of hightide land per year.

Thats really interesting. I didnt know that Charleston harbour was that shallow to begin with that it needed that massive jetty.

On a side note, the immediate northern side, of the North extension of that jetty must be super shallow if thats where all the sand ends up. Or is that where they excavate the sand to dump on the south side of the jetty?

Some times though it is typically a mix of inland soils hauled there and dredge spoil, though now, a nice ecosystem has popped up along the north jetty and its a great fishing spot. The same conservation group that fusses about the jetty being there also fusses about not disturbing the ecosystem there... LOL.... Oh well.

We are trying to get to 48' depth in the harbor. There is a new 3 berth port terminal being built now and we got the new bridge over the Cooper River so we just gotta deepen the harbor and we can start getting the super massive container ships. That would make Charleston and Savannah two of the largest east coast ports volume wise.

Of course the funding is federal and is tied up in the sequester/budget quagmire. C'est la vie.

A pissant third world starts a war to get the Feds out, half a million die, then whines about the Fed Funding being slow when they should pay for their own damn improvements. It's your own silt clogging your harbor. Clean up your own mess with your own money. Bastages!

I know right. Those damn republicans have been trying for years to get the harbor deepened. The liberals want it left alone. LOL...Obama removed it from the budget. Please don't forget about all the carpet -baggers who came down after the war of northern aggression and started up reconstructionist industries using low wage earning freedmen and young boys with no fathers.

From Lindsay Graham's own webpage:
Senate Debates Legislation Affecting Charleston Harbor Deeping
by Senator Lindsey Graham

The United Sates Senate is now debating the Energy and Water Appropriations bill which contains many important provisions for South Carolinas’ harbors, waterways, and coastline. Among the most notable is a provision I introduced, which makes the Port of Charleston eligible for funding to continue its harbor deepening study.

Deepening Charleston Harbor is the number-one issue for South Carolina’s economy. The Port of Charleston is our gateway to the world. That’s why I have long believed that when it comes to deepening Charleston Harbor, failure is simply not an option.

Today, one out of every five jobs in South Carolina is tied – directly and indirectly – to the operation of the Port. Deepening the port will allow us to keep these jobs in our state and also create more jobs in the future. We are moving to a more merit-based approach to port deepening and I’m confident Charleston will fare well under that new standard. Charleston port deepening offers the taxpayer the biggest bang for their buck.

Under the provision affecting Charleston Harbor Deepening:

Funding for ongoing Army Corp of Engineer projects -- which were not included in the President’s budget submission to Congress -- will be eligible to receive up to $10.5 million for ongoing harbor studies. The federal share of the Charleston Harbor deepening study, which will be matched by the state, is expected to cost approximately $4.2 million in the next fiscal year.

Our new provision is a breakthrough in port funding. Under the current system we are shut out because we were not included in the President’s 2012 budget. Now, Charleston will be eligible to receive federal funding to continue our deepening study. Until the study is complete we cannot transition into actual construction on deepening the harbor.

Other provisions will also have positive impact on South Carolina’s ports like Georgetown and coastal communities which continue to face erosion problems. They will be eligible for funding in various areas including a $55 million account for commercial harbor maintenance, $40 million for shore protection, $30 million for small harbor maintenance, $22 million for navigation, and $15 million for inland navigation channel maintenance.

My life is so crazy comfortable that my mind has fabricated a heightened sense of importance on things that don't really matter in order to induce a healthy amount of stress.

Today my mind has decided that I should be really stressed out about where a kid (who I don't know) should go to school and play a game with a ball.

With a bunch of other kids we don't know, and probably never will.

It's really been difficult for my wife and I. We can't decide which excursions to take on our Sandals Jamaican vacation over Labor Day.
