Not to the extent of Philly. I'd say almost 50% of all nice restaurants are BYOB (maybe more).

Corkage Culture Across the US: Is Bringing Wine to a Restaurant a Right? - Vintage America - Eater National

I haven't been to Philly since high school. So I have no idea how many BYOB restaurants they have. I wasn't challenging that they have them, or that they have more of them. The original post sounded like you were insinuating that Philly was the only place that has BYOB restaurants. When in fact, EVERY major city has them. There are probably 5 restaurants on my block that are BYOB. Some charge corkage, some don't.

Really think you guys are sleeping on Philly:

1. All the amenities of a big city (5th largest in country) but without the ludicrous cost of living.

2. Blue collar attitude but there are plenty of attractive young people. Won't find as many of the d-bag finance types that you'd get in NYC/Chicago

3. Killer sports scene

4. Really, really underrated food scene. Can't stress this enough. BYOBs are fairly unique to Philly and are God's gift to the Earth.

5. Can easily escape the city. I'm an outdoorsy type and can drive 1 hour and be in the country fishing on some reknowned trout streams. I feel like it takes 2 hours just to get out of the NYC metro.

Favorite Major City

Newark is literally the worst place in the world. I have been there a thousand too many times.

You could add Jersey City, Orange, Edison, Harlem..just that whole area is AWFUL!

I only asked about D.C. cuz I work there and I hate it. It drives me nuts. Other then the NW/some of the NE..it's a crap hole.

Yeah it sucks. North Jersey is my home, but it's a pretty tough area.

Anybody here actually like D.C.?

I honestly don't understand how you can "not" like DC relative to the grand scheme of cities. Temperate climate, tons do... and lots of it is free, more reasonable prices than San Fran/NYC/etc., lots and lots of green everywhere, not cramped feeling, etc. The only legitimate negative with DC relative to other big cities is the transportation.

With that being said... your hater's guide to DC:
They call DC the capital of the free world... which really makes you want to take a closer look at fascism. The economy is great in DC and businesses have been flocking here in recent years because it's "recession proof", which is really just a euphemism for "suckling at the teet of big Government which never stops printing money."

All transportation in DC sucks. Driving is hell. Not only is there your worse-than-normal big city congestion but you will learn to fear blue diplomat plates more than Gary Gray fears the fade pass. The thing about diplomats is that not only are they universally bad drivers, but they are also generally immune to the rules of the road. So it's a perfect storm of incompetence and don't-give-a-fuck piloting a $200k car.

The public transportation isn't NYC subway bad... but it's bad. Not only do the routes make little to no sense, but breakdowns and track maintenance are a daily occurrence... as is broken air conditioning during the brutal summers. Take however much time the trip planner says it will take for you to get from point A to point B and triple it.

Think about how much you hate career politicians. Now think about how much politics in general annoy you. And finally think about what scum you consider lobbyists to be. That's your general DC socialite wrapped into one person. The sense of entitlement among some people is absurd, and only trumped by the rude and cutthroat nature of others. Most decent people who work in or around DC don't live there and commute in from the suburbs. Those that DO live in DC have to deal with one of the most corrupt (sup, Chicago) and horribly run cities in the country. The most famous DC public servant is Mayor Marion Barry. Barry makes Rob Ford look like a Boy Scout. Arrested for crack in 1990 he went to federal prison... only to run for mayor again upon his release and, of course, win handily. Marion Barry still serves as a DC councilman to this day.

Best of all? DC, legally, is still owned by Congress... yet its residents have no representation senators or congressmen with legitimate voting rights. How poetic.

I'm sure there are a few here, but I've never seen a BYOB restaurant in or around Phoenix. We could really benefit from some, too. Very difficult to find places with a decent beer list.

What part of town are you in Whiskey?

Pezzano's at Scottsdale & Shea was a good Italian BYOB. Great veal.... maybe I heard it moved (?)

I'm sure there are a few BYOB's on Central in Trendyhood. Don't get down there now that Humble Pie opened in Scottsdale.

There are a lot of fun places in DC. I spend the majority of my time in Georgetown or on 14th street. There are also lots of fun rec sports leagues on the mall and capitol hill and such. All really great places to be... and Arlington itself is a blast.

Minus a couple restaurants in Nashville, only strip clubs are BYOB.

I got a few PMs asking what BYOBs are so I'll elaborate.

BYOBs are Bring Your Own Beverage restaurants. The liquor license laws are fucked up in PA so not every restaurant can have one. Many restaurants in Philadelphia operate as a BYOB where patrons can bring their own wine, beer, liquor, whatever.

The reason this is awesome is because it keeps down the bill and it allows restaurant owners to take more creative risks when opening their joint. Owners aren't forced to pay arm and leg up-front for a liquor license. Most of the objectively best restaurants in Philly are BYOBs for this reason.

Interesting... there are a few places out, in, and around LA where you CAN bring your own stuff in, but not one that I'm aware of that doesn't have it's own fully stocked bar and where that's like 'the thing'... and when you bring your stuff, you pay a 'corking fee'… so there isn't that much in the way of savings.

Yeah, the idea that I have to pay to drink my own stuff bothers me. It's also like those steak places where you cook your own steak.

Shit, if I want to go out and and shop and pay for my own booze or have to cook my own food, then why the hell am I even going out in the first place??? Usually, I go out because I DON'T want to do all that crap myself.

Almost all of the BYOBs here are free corkage. A few have it, but that's typically reserved only for the super high-end restaurants.

Buon Gusto in Huntington Beach and Gypsy's Mediterranean in Long Beach are 2 BYOB restaurants that do not charge a corkage fee.

Cool, I do enjoy the nicer parts of Long Beach... I'll hit it up... Huntington Beach is cool but I tend to avoid it for a number of reasons in favor of other smaller, lesser known beaches...

There are a small number of places up here that are cool enough to let you bring your own stuff... but like I've have said, all have fully stocked bars and all have fees when you bring your own... the few places in LA I've found like that tend to do the same... then you have places like Morton's where you can actually just leave your stuff there til next time... again, for a fee. The Shrimp Alexander makes it more than worth it though. :)

Gun to your head, which city would you live in?:

-Baltimore
-Detroit
-Cleveland
-Gary
-Buffalo
-Montgomery
-Newark or Trenton

And the parameters of the question are that you'd have to live in the city, and not be able to leave its city limits.

For me Baltimore, and it isn't close. Sure it has a ton of crime, but having family in the area I've visited probably 10+ times and had a blast each time. Fell's Point, Highlandtown, even touristy Inner Harbor are all great. Love that place.

Oh and of course, Chicago. It's the best big city in the country. The people are great, there is literally something to do every weekend from April until October, and I've at least gotten used to winter.

I'm from the burbs but live in the city - so I've experienced both. I think most people associate themselves with the city either way because they've spent so much of their lives in it. I see the point, but who really cares?

Bars, Beach, Theater, Museums, Food, and Sports - they're all top notch. Love living here.

Where at on 14th St.?

I have lived in San Diego, Tampa, the suburbs of Detroit and now Chicago.

San Diego is the most beautiful city in the country but you need to make $200k to have a good life out there.

Tampa is hot in the summer but beautiful in the Winter. Cheap cost of living, no state income tax, little traffic.

Detroit suburbs are nice but lets be real.......its Detroit

Chicago is great in the summer, but awful in the winter. plus if you go south of the loop you risk being shot for no reason.

If cost of living were all even I would choose San Diego, but this is real life.... I would choose Tampa.

Our strip bars here are all BYOB for full nudes. If the strip bar sells beer and liquor the girls can't get full nude. LOL.

I've never been to DC but seriously, for all the hate it has gotten in this thread, DC is regularly on the 'best cities in the country' list... at least that's been my experience.

For not liking LA, I do enjoy the LA/Orange beach cities from about Redondo on down to Newport, Long Beach is a cool, diverse, city I guess... Seal Beach is great, though always massively crowded... Korea Town in LA is always fun, though don't be there at night...

Seal Beach is great. I was a planning intern there while in grad school. Sunset Beach will always have a special place in my heart. I made out with one of the bartenders at Mothers after we closed the place down. It was my first day in town too! Haha.

The only place I've ever lived where I would never live again is Dearborn, Michigan.

OK...I lied. Never thought that I'd land here but work brought me here. It truly does suck...but there are a lot of really good people here.

Sigh. It's not a bad city to live in anymore. The renaissance/transformation it's gone through in the last 5 or so years is unbelievable. I'm working in real estate as a summer job and the development going up downtown is incredible. Young professionals are flocking to the city and love it here. There's a lot of fun stuff to do if you know where to find it.

And plus, because this is important, USA Today named it one of the top 10 cities to go bar hopping in the world. Right alongside Dublin and New Orleans.

Sorry I know you guys don't give a shit but I've made it my duty in life to help outsiders realize that the national perception of Cleveland is outdated. Come and visit. I swear you'll love it.

Isn't this how Michigan is? When we used to go up to Kalamazoo there were two clubs right beside each other. One was full nude and no alcohol and the other was tops only and alcohol.

Chicago. But sadly, the violence has kept me away from there recently.
South Bend of course. Pittsburgh & Dallas are rather nice to travel to.

Least favorite. Detroit.

As long as you ride around in a Humvee, Chicago is awesome!!!
