I always find these points odd....are you honestly going to tell me with a straight face that Liverpools two league matches against Manchester United and two versus Everton were bigger more important games for the reds this year then the five points they dropped to City?
Whether or not that makes the games a rivalry is a mute point and subjective...but if you honestly think City vs Liverpool for the foreseeable future in England is not the biggest game of the year, whenever it happens, you're out of your mind.
Enjoy your champions league trophy, you guys earned it.
We will see you next year, cannot wait!
I stated who the club and their supporters feel their traditional rivals are. I may or may not have typed it with a straight face.
Apart from that, there have been periods where Liverpool's "biggest" matches of the year when they were actually contending were against Arsenal, United, Chelsea and now it's City. These moments change from season to season. Liverpool has contended for a title twice in the last 5-6 years and both times came in 2nd to City.
Social media plays a major role in this, especially over in England. There is a brigade of City fans that have gone out of their way to seek out Liverpool fans. It's mostly troll on troll crime perpetrated by both sets of supporters. Both sets of supporters have individuals that know enough not to engage. The majority of Everton and United supporters on social media seemed to hitch their wagons to City. A lot of other neutrals did too. I know Newcastle supporters, for example, that were pulling for Liverpool. I know other Newcastle supporters, those who reside in England, who hate Jordan Henderson because he came from Sunderland and as Liverpool's captain these Toon Army members went for City.
There were a fair amount of neutrals on social media as well that just hated on Liverpool and weren't even pulling for City to win so much as they wanted to see Liverpool fall short. It often feels like over there you have to choose a side as a neutral, whereas if New England plays the NY Giants in a Super Bowl, I am fine watching the commercials and not caring who wins.
Ultimately, which side of the pond you're on and how dialed in you are to the other along with social media play an important part in the perspective of all of this. I believe. I could be, and most likely am, incredibly wrong.
