It’s funny England goes through one if the more gifted semi runs in memory and all it’ll feed is their deluded sense of superiority... it’d be in panic mode but I doubt they can hang with Croatia and then the France Bekguim winner back to back...

I haven’t really picked up on that from the team or media coverage. It seems mostly like they’re just glad to be performing well with a gifted draw, rather than blowing it.

That’s how I feel whenever ND is playing well, like early last year. I’m not talking shit or shouting about a return to glory... I’m just happy things haven’t turned to hot garbage at some point yet.

It should probably be different for the World Cup, but one of the things that is attractive to me about soccer is that there’s no super fake effort for media peeps to avoid bias or feeling good about their club or country. You watch any NFL pregame shows, and it’s a bunch of former players and coaches trying to be fair and balanced and act all professional... but then they pick their former teams regardless of their prior reasoning or analysis.

I love turning on a Premier League match and hearing a former player providing color commentary. You can’t miss his animosity or favoritism, depending on which side he had stronger feelings about back in his playing days.

I also like that soccer announcers, in general, aren’t shy about being critical of poor play, poor refereeing, or bad sportsmanship. Announcers try to be diplomatic for the most part in other sports, but it seems to be acceptable in soccer culture to tell it how it is, and not worry about stepping on toes or pissing off one of the fan bases. That’s refreshing.

Yeah but, ND really does have a glorious past. England has 1 WC. In that regard they are like UGA. A lot of talk about their glory, a lot of hype every year, but underachievement and only 1 title.

I will say though, the England team this year doesn't have the same feeling of over confidence, obnoxiously cockiness of England teams of recent memory. The fans are the fans and oh well.

Yeah I really like the way this England team is playing. Really coordinated and solid soccer from everyone. Total team effort. I was rooting for them today and I’ll be rooting for them on Wednesday.

Pretty good game by England. Sweden has made great teams look horrible and couldn't today. Still some defensive hiccups, but Pickford came up big for them.

If not England, I'd like to see Belgium or Croatia. I enjoy watching France, but I'd rather see a first time winner.

So every other year, after the Euros or the WC I want to get into club level "football" (soccer) but I just...can't. For a number of reasons.
One: The domestic league is horrible. I know it is getting better but the first time I ever truly paid attention to soccer was the 2010 WC. It's hard to go from the insanely high level of play at the WC/Euros and then watch MLS. Even the name is stupid, it is not the "major league" as that would apply either a baseball like system or a promotion/relegation system like the rest of the world. We have neither. After watching MLS after the WC it is like going from watching the NFL to watch pee wee football.

Additionally, I have no organic connection to any club. I'm from Minnesota originally but haven't lived there since 2006. I lived in Georgia (Atlanta metro for 4ish years) for 8 years, but left in 2014. I've also lived in Indy briefly, San Diego, and I recently moved to Las Vegas. Cheering for Minnesota or Atlanta (my most logical club connections) is hard as I don't know jack about either club, I don't know the players and furthermore might not like them.

Two: I can't get into European leagues. I know the level of play is high but...I have absolutely zero connection to them, it is hard to watch the matches, and it is hard to generate an interest in foreign teams. I don't want to bandwagon on the big clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barca, or Bayern Munich.

go down and check out your local amateur/grass roots team or even start following your local high schools. Always fun to get into soccer at that level IMO. Kids/folks playing for the love of the game and not for money.

If you live in Vegas, forget about Soccer, unless they have a bunny league. I'd recommend following Atlanta. They are new, so not a lot of history. They are also good, so you wouldn't be a miserable fan.

I'm a lot like you though. While I do follow ATL a little now, I'm primarily an INTL fan. WCs, Euros, Gold Cups, etc.. I do follow Bayern Munich a bit because of several German friends and to an extent my heritage.
