I don't think it's the exciting hire that some want, but would be a step in the right direction. My biggest question is why would he want it now?

Not employed currently, correct? His PSG severance is said to be 22 million Euros.

Idk, we're not exactly in a relegation battle trying to stay afloat. And wasn't he removed from England over corruption allegations?

Again, improvement to Arena. Just don't know how much.

he will at least get you guys organized and defending properly. not saying he will want to play free flowing football but like you said he's a big upgrade over Arena.

He's not necessarily corrupt, he's just too naive/trusting in people.

Describing the Allardyce and Blanc reports:

Report: Sam Allardyce, Laurent Blanc want to be next USMNT boss – ProSoccerTalk

Allardyce is an intriguing possibility. I think his pie-eating, back-slapping, drinking-wine-in-a-pint-glass style would play well in the States. As dublin said, he will get us organized defensively, which we aren't at present. Attacking-wise, he tends to play a direct style and rely on a physical #9 as a target player, which Jozy might be good for (ironically, maybe, since Big Sam went on record when he was at Sunderland about what a good deal it was for Sunderland to trade Altidore away for Jermain Defoe). But I could see it working. Not sure it's a home run hire, but I'd be optimistic about it.

look at Martin O'Neill with Ireland and Michael O'Neill with Northern Ireland, Organization, passion and a bit of guts can take you a long way. i think these principles would fit in well with most US players. Pulisic isn't ready for a whole team to be built around him just yet.

Allardyce is intriguing. He organizes his teams, gets them to play hard, and seems like a guy the players want to do so for. Could be the guy that builds the team back up. I like the comparison to the O'Neill's.

Spurs grab a point in Madrid, crazy.

Dortmund ties APOEL and has dropped 8 of 9 points so far.

Love it, what a result.

(Unrelated, but) I just checked the teamsheet for today's Barca match and I am still confused about how Gerard Deulofeu couldn't regularly get into the Everton team, but Barca still wanted him back. (On the other hand, I always liked Deulofeu and frankly thought he should have gotten more opportunities at Everton. But still.)

Is there a team in Europe playing better footie than Manchester City right now? Look to be most dominant side we have seen out of England in a while-- so far.

Dead on. He's one of those guys who is really exciting to watch in some matches, but makes no impact at all in too many others.

Wow, yeah. They are really rolling. KDB is genuinely my favorite player in the world. I love watching him because he makes exquisite passes look easy. Then you have Sterling playing the best football of his career. Sane, electric. Aguero missing, but nobody missing him. The attacking unit has really gotten in sync and rounded into form.

But it sounds like the real story in the game against Napoli yesterday was how stout the Man City defense was in the face of a relentless high press from Napoli in the second half (they needed a great block from Stones, etc., I get it, but still). If City have the attacking together, and now they are getting the defending and the goalkeeping together ... if they keep this up throughout the rest of the fall they'll have to be considered legit Champs League trophy contenders heading into the knockout stage.

Half-way through the Champions League Group stages.

Team--Points--Goal Diff

GROUP A
Man U, 9, +7
Basel, 6, +4
CSKA, 3, -4
Benfica, 0, -7

United easily getting through. Benfica, the defending Portuguese champs, are flopping.

GROUP B
PSG, 9, +12
Munich, 6, +3
Celtic, 3, -5
Anderlecht, 0, -10

PSG are NBA Jam on fire.

GROUP C
Chelsea, 7, +7
Roma, 5, +1
Atletico, 2, -1
Qarabag, 1, -7

Atletico could really regret that tie against Qarabag.

GROUP D
Barcelona, 9, +6
Juventus, 6, 0
Sporting, 3, -1
Olympiacos, 0, -5

Like a mirror image of Group B.

GROUP E
Liverpool, 5, +7
Spartak, 5, +4
Sevilla, 4, -1
Maribor, 1, -10

Glorified Europa League group!

GROUP F
Man City, 9, +7
Shakhtar, 6, 0
Napoli, 3, 0
Feyenoord, 0, -7

Losing the first game in Ukraine was an upset but time to recover for many people's fun darkhorse Napoli.

GROUP G
Besiktas, 9, +5
Leipzig, 4, -1
Porto, 3, 0
Monaco, 1, -4

Turns out selling so many players isn't great for Monaco. And they're not catching PSG in Ligue 1 this year.

GROUP H
Tottenham, 7, +5
Real Madrid, 7, +5
Dortmund, 1, -4
APOEL, 1, -6

All 5 English clubs lead their groups so far.

United cruising; not looking amazing though.

Dont think an English team is yet to lose in the Group Stages. Pretty impressive.

Anyone see Dzeko’s goal today? Can’t find quality link. Easy contender for goal of the year. So skillful so incredible

Roma and Chelsea are the two clubs I support. So the 3-3 result was illogically satisfying. Dzeko's goal could compete for goal of the year for sure. It reminded me of at least 2 goals Totti scored back in the day. Athletico lost, so both Chelsea and Roma are sitting pretty in the group standings at the moment.

Surprised to see Spartak crush Sevilla. This is not quite how I thought Group E would go. The two knockout stage spots from that group are very much up for grabs. Liverpool need to build on that great performance against Maribor and gain some momentum.

What a game yesterday between Chelsea and Roma. Wow.

I can usually only watch one midweek game a week besides Liverpool's, and I chose to DVR Real/Spurs this week. I chose wrong.

Rangers just knocked out of the Scottish Cup Semis by Motherwell... that's like three or four straight knockout games gers have dropped to Motherwell... wow.

Celtic Motherwell in the final now.

UGH. That was disgusting to watch as a Liverpool fan. Moments of shockingly boneheaded defending plus inability to defend set pieces equals more of the same for Liverpool, i.e. a match in which they were not really outplayed and yet did not give themselves a chance to win.

OTOH, I give Poch a lot of credit for his tactics. When these sides met in February he tried to do his normal high defensive line thing and Mane ate Ben Davies for breakfast. On Sunday, neither Mane nor Davies played, but Poch made sure Salah -- who generally looked in the mood -- wasn't able to pick up where Mane left off (well, other than the one Liverpool goal, which was arguably a Lloris error because it seemed he could have come for it, and in any case Lloris atoned for it later by making a couple of nice saves).

Klopp really has to make changes in the back. It might be time to make Emre Can a center back, for example. Or something. What we are doing is just not working defensively.

Maybe the most amazing thing is that MORENO of all people was the only defender not to make a shocking mistake. His renaissance might be a sign of the apocalypse.
