LA: totally agree; Liverpool has no gripe ("business is business.")

Still, I wish my new root-for team could somehow undercut the big bad boys (though I'll watch Barca every time The Wizard plays.)

I took N. Dakota's post more as just exultant gloating in relief that we appear to be keeping Coutinho, without genuine disapproval of Barca's approach.

Regardless, I totally agree with Hollywood and OMM that there is no reason to be upset with Barca here. Barca and Real Madrid are the creme de la creme for any South American player (really, any player the world over) and it will probably always be that way. Coutinho reportedly wants to go there and I'm fine with it. I'm just glad he's such a stand-up guy that he's willing to be patient and wait till next year to make the move rather than blow up Klopp's plans for this season. (I hope I'm not eating those words anytime soon.)

LOL...why? Because they are going after a player they want? Welcome to the world of international futbol. Liverpool does the exact same thing to clubs smaller than them, like when they treat Southampton like their feeder club.

I root for Liverpool in the EPL so I feel for them, and I completely get why they'd keep him...kid is a stud. But I don't get why their fans would hate the bigger club for going after him, when 'Pool does the same thing to other clubs. "The game is the game."

You took the post too literal. I'm well aware Pool loves taking from the next tier. He's gone next year almost certainly.

That all being said, anytime you can watch Barca or Real squirm is a good day. Huge huge huge money at those clubs. This Neymar stuff was a blast to follow.

Coutinho's transfer request appears to be real:

Now it's just a matter of how serious the player is about wanting to leave and how hard he wants to fight for it.

Not looking good. At all. This makes me think back to when Torres wanted out. The year prior you could tell he wanted out by his play on the field. It hurt LFC bad during the season as they relied on him up front and then he left for Chelsea the following market. If Phil wants out, let him go, take the cash and buy some players who want to play at Liverpool.

Let him go....next summer. If this was June, i'd probably be with you. Too big of a season.

I have to agree. Klopp and his style require full commitment from the players. If Coutinho's heart isn't at LFC, then we need to let him go. Forcing him to stay will only backfire.

Couts probably feels like now is his chance and he can't blow it because he might not get it again. Rumors now that Barca will turn to Christian Eriksen if they can't get Phil. Maybe the news about Barca turning to alternatives is what's making Phil panic now and try to force LFC's hand.

Like I said before, I get it. It breaks my heart though.

David De Gea anyone?? Forcing him to stay just forces him to live up to his end of a contract that he signed.

Philippe Coutinho won't get his own way - but this is the beginning of the end at Liverpool - Liverpool Echo

Liverpool Blood Red Podcast - What next for Philippe Coutinho and why FSG now have no choice - Liverpool Echo

Interesting takes from the Liverpool Echo guys. Basically, while they sympathize with Coutinho, they don't see how Liverpool can possibly sell him at this point in the window, with only 2 weeks to find a replacement. Had he made a transfer request in June, different story, perhaps, but it's too late to ask Klopp to replace a cornerstone of the team. Fair points.

Rangers need to stop losing big games to lower clubs at home... this was a couple years ago after they lost the playoff to Motherwell at IBrox:

Watched the Liverpool/Watford game --- it's going to be a frustrating season for me I guess.

This board knows that I am a novice soccer fan, BUT, I swear that there are many similarities between winning and losing in this sport with the one (Basketball) that I am familiar with. Liverpool is one of the least physical teams I've watched in the top level of this sport. Admittedly, Watford has a bit more physicality than most, but that just helped bring it out.

I began (sloppily) counting the number of interactions (not just set pieces) where physicality (I mean power with a dose of thugness) made a difference. Whether it was close to the goal or mid-field, Liverpool "lost" those confrontations at at least a 70% level. --- this is everything from challenges in the air to butting off runners to screening and muscling past opponents. Liverpool survived by stunning quickness and foot skill, but WOW what a deficit to put yourself in before the whistle even starts the game.

All the announcers were commenting about this (in terms of defending set pieces) after the game, but none seemed tuned into how generically unphysical this team is and whether that sickens the whole play.

I look forward (NOT) to a season full of watching my (ill?) chosen team get their physical @$$ kicked even though winning a bunch due to fabulous lightning skills.

Chelsea lost to Burnley. Arsenal almost lost to Leicester. Liverpool were very unlucky today. But eh, that's soccer. It happens to everybody. Let's not throw the towel just yet. It's the first week of the season. Liverpool will do better in the future, there is doubt my mind.

.... no towel-throwing. I'm talking about lack of physicality. If Liverpool had just one dominant in-the-air player to securely head out defensive corners, they'd be a LOT harder to score against. Watford just walked through that corner "defense." Such a player would also make Liverpool's own corners something more than a blank space in the game.

I'm also talking about getting out-muscled all over the place in mid-field. This turns large numbers of attack-potential situations into funk. People try to dismiss guys like Fellaini as a crude thug, but ManU can employ him as that necessary muscle to thwart many many things. I've said it before here, but even though this is supposed to be "the beautiful game", I'd like to have a few intimidators out there on my side. (( unrequited dreams of Vidal or Chiellini )).

It's amazing how Liverpool continue to concede crappy set-piece goals. The first one was just vintage Liverpool, with no one stepping up to take charge of the ball and an opposing player getting there first.

The second set-piece goal was a little flukey ... Wijnaldum just misjudged it in the air and didn't clear it when he should have, and then it fell to a Watford player, who played it to another Watford player who was actually offside, or close enough that it could have been called. Gini just has to do better there, but even so, it was a little unlucky.

Not a great day for Gini... the second goal happened in part because an attempted Alexander-Arnold clearance caromed off him (not really his fault; if it's anyone's fault, I'd say Moreno's for diving in prematurely and allowing Watford to penetrate down his side), and then Gini blew a golden opportunity to score a fourth goal and seal the game.

But yeah, it looked disturbingly like 2016-17 LFC on Saturday. Ugh.

Early #hottake on the top 6 in the EPL:

(1) Man U -- I wouldn't be surprised if we see an echo of the '14-15 Chelsea title-winning squad in this group: blow everyone away with expansive, attractive football first half of the season, then shut things down and win every game 1-0 second half of the season.

(2/3) Man City - I think they will be a lot more consistent, look much more stable defensively, but I also won't be surprised if they have their days where the leak goals, especially if they have injuries in the back

(2/3) Spurs - same squad as last year, same or similar results to follow, toss up whether they finish ahead of Man City

(4/5) Liverpool & Arsensal - both teams great going forward, both teams will struggle for consistency; team that achieves more consistency will be the one that finishes top 4

(?) - Chelsea - I'm worried this will be a repeat of '15-16 Chelsea. The squad is thin and they looked genuinely bad.
