Weird to use Mikel at CB under those circumstances. If it were a big game, I could see going with experience, but in a game like this, you have a perfect opportunity to blood the young fella. Hope it doesn't mean he hasn't impressed.

I got an update last night that said John Terry will be told he is done at Chelsea after this season in the coming days. Hopefully for Miazga that's good news.

He was told that several, several months ago. When Mourinho was sacked there was hope that it would change, but was never going to be the case. The brass was ready to move on. That is why his double yellow last game was so sad for his fans, because he wasn't going to get his proper sending off (no pun intended) in his last game.

Supposedly he rented out Stamford Bridge on Monday to have a final (fun) game with his Chelsea teammates (and I would assume others) at the stadium he called home for 18 years. It will be interesting to see where he plays next, as he does not plan on retiring, and at centerback, a position of need throughout the world, I would imagine he will have a lot of suitors despite his age.

Bayern's practice of hoarding the best domestic talent has paid off handsomely for the national team. Though I have no idea why Goetze hasn't managed to break out yet. Wish they would have nabbed Reus instead.

First soccer game I got into was FIFA 2002. My buddies (playing with Madrid and Arsenal) would wipe the floor with me, until I started picking Bayern. My ethnic heritage is primarily German, and I can trace my ancestry back to Catholic Bavarians. Of the places I've visited in Europe, that region is among my favorites.

So that's why I root for Bayern. I totally get the hate; they're basically the Yankees of Germany. But I don't live there, and it's difficult to follow the Bundesliga as a whole, so that hate doesn't have much purchase on me.

It's interesting that "capitalist" America produced the NFL, with salary caps and draft rules that make it remarkably difficult for one team to stay on top for long, while "socialist" Europe's transfer market is ruthlessly free enterprise.

I cheer for Munich because I started out watching the world cup and my favorite players were Munich guys... Young Schweinsteiger and Lahm. World Cup 2010 had Müller.... Favorite player to date. I didn't have a problem with Munich's practices until Pep. To those crying about Hummels, feel free to tell me where he played growing up.

Had a started watching intensely from the beginning, I'd likely be a Dortmund or Schalke fan. I actually prefer to play FIFA manager mode with Schalke. Munich is boring if you are doing a dynasty.

Isn't it fascinating?? And I have to say, I much prefer the European model. It is so frustrating as a fan to get attached to a player and then see him sent elsewhere for no apparent reason. You howl on the message boards, and the only answer you get is, "salary cap constraints." It really sucks!

For example, I am a big Chicago Blackhawks fan. They have had tons of success by keeping a core of 6 or 7 stars over the last 6 or 7 years, but the rest of the team is completely different from year to year due to salary cap reshuffling. Basically, unless you are a star, you can't stay with one team for very long. Contrast that with soccer, where you have so many players who have time to develop real loyalty to their club and stay there as long as they are being effective on the field. It can't happen in American sports! I hate that.

One bad thing about soccer is the very real issue of the Peter Principle. Lots of really good players sitting on the bench at big clubs instead of being a key player at a middle sized team.

I bet Bayern players on the bench and on loan could probably be a top 5 Bundesliga team. Same deal at the other top clubs.

I do agree. Look at Vermaelen. Captain at Arsenal, (almost) everyday starter. Leaves because he is getting sick of finishing without a trophy (and seeing Kos take his time), to go to Barca. In his two years there he has played in a total of 11 game. 11!

Since that move he hasn't played a single game for Belgium. It sincerely cost him his place, even on the bench as a sub, on the Belgium roster. But hey, he's won trophies!
