Hey guys, I have a question for you. Let me start by saying that I'm completely clueless when it comes to soccer. I've never played or watched it until very recently. I keep noticing how a good amount of goals scored come from headers via corner kicks and such. So my question is this:
Why don't teams just have 1 or 2 really tall guys that hang out in front of the net?
It would seem that you would have a big advantage if, as long as the ball is kicked well, your guy would be the only one with a head on the ball.
Is that completely dumb?

On corners teams tend to do exactly that....

Of course some teams like to spend record money on a big guy up front and cannot get a decent winger to cross the ball. And then ship him and the terrible wingers out for a massive loss.

Oh, guess I just didn't notice the height difference.

So I haven't revolutionized the game?

I think the tallest guy I have ever seen play is Peter Crouch. He is pretty good with his feet and I think he is like 6'6". That is uncommon though.

Plays for Arsenal and is listed at 6'6". Center back, awkward on his feet a bit, but he reads the game so well. He's dangerous on corners due to his ability to get above everyone to score or flick on.

Cack is right though too, that height is very uncommon in soccer.

I did not know Mertesacker was that tall. I thought he was like 6' 3" or so. Hard to tell with all the little guys out there.

Teams love to put their tall defenders up on corners... And of course use them to defend on the flip... Think Dortmund or LA Galaxy... Two good examples

Jozy Altidore just won a penalty which was converted by Fabio Borini who is on loan from Liverpool to end Mourinho's unbeaten home streak at the bridge. That was a great match to watch as an American Red.

Since I don't have a BPL team, I always root for the team with the most Spaniards (except for Liverpool this year...since they play such an attractive style and since I've always been a bit partial to them since the days of incredibly in-form Fernando Torres), in this case Chelsea. But when Altidore came on, I was rooting hard for him to score a goal, or in this case, make an impact, which he did...FINALLY.

Was happy to see him so aggressive (Torres too).

Well, ManU fans, you won't have David Moyes to kick around any more. Mail says he's gone, maybe even before the season ends. I kind of doubt that, but we'll see.

ETA: Papers seem adamant that Moyes could be gone today or tomorrow. Still, what, 4 gms left in the season? Wild, if that happens.

Having to root for Man U over Everton (because Tottenham would benefit) was like having to root for USC over Michigan.

I'm ok with them losing though.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/moyes-sacked-manchester-united-manager-161000619--sow.html

The Glazer family has decided to dismiss the Scot just 11 months after he was appointed Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

A United spokesperson has denied that Moyes has already been sacked, but Goal UK can report that his departure is "imminent". He is not expected to be in the dugout when United plays Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Player-coach Ryan Giggs is expected to be placed in charge of the team until the end of the season, with the other members of the backroom team that Moyes brought with him from Everton - Steve Round, Phil Neville and Jimmy Lumsden - also set to leave the club. A permanent manager will then be appointed at the end of the season.

Fired in year 1 of a 6 year deal.

Why fire him now? What will 12 points get them? Nothing that I can see. Man that is embarrassing.

So a few items here:
1. Giggs and Scholes will be gaffers for ManU heading forward. I love the Player/Coach idea. I know Giigs is pretty much retired and so is Scholes.; however, I love the idea that Giggs could sub himself in. LOL.

2. Chelsea will play a lower tiered 11 at Anfield on Sunday in order to go for glory in the CL. Not sure what I think about this and it could just be Mourihno head games but I want Chelsea's best team as a Liverpool fan. Man City are already throwing a fit about it too. This game will be stingy I think, as Chelsea have been content to sit back in defense and score on the counter. Liverpool will keep attacking and our defense was atrocious against Norwich. Very nervy fixture for me. I hope that Chelsea uses Luiz and that he gets forward often. SaSaS will be right there in that vacated space.

3. I also saw where Ramires is facing a multi-game ban for striking the midfielder last week. If you did not see it, he basically forearmed him in front of the ref and nothing was called but he must respond to a charge by Thursday. Chelsea may be without his services for the remainder of the year.
