Parking the bus (a term that is getting overused just because there is so much of it and it makes it sound humorous - the term should maybe be "flooding") is too successful an approach now. Average teams with no hope have become very good at it. Even great attacking teams need luck to go their way to get a goal. In the box it is 5 (counting the keeper) against 2 a lot of the time.
As a tactic it has been around for a long time. For many years that is the style of play the U.S. used. I understand why teams use it: they don't have the high end talent on offense to play any other way, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I feel like if one team is turtling up and the other team is only attacking with 2 players, you're blaming the wrong team for the boring game you're watching.

The extra time should be 9 on 9 and play until there is a goal. But I suppose you can still flood with 9 on 9. It would probably be more dangerous for the team actually trying to score.

For sure, but teams have gotten better at it at a rate of knots. I think it is just easier for coaches to focus on defensive structures and they have focused on it big time. I have been bored with every game I have seen since the first round. I am very happy for Paraguay peoples that they get through but it is not good for the sport.

That was quite a game of soccer. Both good fun teams that could have gone another couple rounds had they not run into each other early.

Paraguay is the byu of soccer

Germany had 75% possession and only scored a goal. German football is deeply broken currently. France has the skill players to overcome Paraguay's total disinterest in playing offense. Someone called them BYU, their total lack of balance reminds me more of Oklahoma.
That was Italy's rep but they have forgotten how to play soccer.

If the bus was parked how did Paraguay get their goal?

Netherlands was thoroughly outclassed like I’ve never seen before. This is a team that hasn’t lost in over a year, and when they last did so still held Spain to almost 50-50 in possession. Against Morocco, Netherlands possession (30%) was almost as bad as Paraguay’s (24%) against Germany. Not only that, but they looked so lumbering and slow out there, almost every time Netherlands got the ball two Moroccan players would race up and suffocate them.

Either of these teams will destroy canada

Lol ya think? We're playing on borrowed time being in the Round of 16 my dude. We've got the 30th ranked squad in the world and we were going face #5 or #6 depending on the outcome of the game.

This is the equivalent of a first round playoff matchup between Notre Dame and Arizona State. We have the equivalent of a puncher's chance, but we're severely outclassed (save about 4 players, 3 of whom are questionably fit) and are going to get caved in by Morrocan possession and pace.

This tournament has been a huge step for Canadian soccer, but I think we're still 4 years away from being able to give a team like Morocco a genuine scare in a game of this magnitude. We have a couple studs in the pipeline though, and 4 years from now Alphonso Davies, Alistair Johnston, Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, Moise Bombito, Jacob Schaffelburg, Ismael Kone and Ali Ahmed will still be in their primes (some at the tail end of it), while Promise David, Nathan Saliba, Niko Sigur, Marcelo Flores, Luc De Fougerolles, Owen Goodman, Sergey Kozlovskyi and Noah Abatneh will just be coming into theirs.

I find it funny reading on social media all the hate PKs get. One of the most exciting parts of the tournament, fairness be damned. I do think an initial 30 minute period of 8v8 would be a pretty cool way to settle it prior to PKs, but that’s never gonna happen.

Somebody plays a low block on you, it's up to you to figure out how to break it down. It has been, and can be, done. Everyone involved makes very good money at their respective clubs and it isn't anything groundbreaking or new. If the other team is going to let you have the ball and play all 11 players behind it, go have a day.

I have seriously enjoyed this tournament because I haven't had to watch religious adherence to time wasting and corner kicks. I'm going to miss this when it is over.

I was rooting for Gakpo after the tragic events he went through. But congrats Morroco
This game giveth and taketh away. That moment lasted 20 minutes. Would have been a story had it stayed 1-0.

Morocco is proving to be a force in recent years. I don't think anyone should have been taking them lightly going into last night.

Lille is going to be able to name their price for Ayyoub Bouaddi. Some English Premier League club will spend silly money to get him.

Can we assume Germany and Netherlands will be looking for new managers for their national teams?

As for extra time and penalty kicks, can we please for just once leave something in sports the way it already fucking is? I get it that no one has an attention span anymore and there has to be some gimmick to make everything quicker and circusy, but just leave it.

Penalty kicks is the gimmick. Let them play until they score a goal.

What idiot picked the Netherlands to win the whole thing?

Me. I'm the idiot.
To be fair that match was more like a quarter final or semi match... I can see Morocco advancing a good bit in this field. I have not been impressed by anyone but France and to a much lessor degree Argentina. Everyone but France has looked vulnerable.
