My amateur opinion is that we have one of those guys in Yedlin, who's still developing but should be very good.

My own sense is that our issue is not one of 'missing pieces'. it's an issue of raising the quality of all of our pieces (and throwing in a couple of world-class talents in the mix, which we haven't done outside of GK).

Right, he shows flashes of brilliance going forward. We have a couple guys who can get forward from the outside back position and make something happen, but not enough we can rely on. Timmy Chandler was disastrous in what I saw of this Gold Cup.

Maybe Rubio rubin can step up earlier than expected. He'll be around 21 by the next world cup and we sure as hell need strikers

Zardes is the perfect example why college soccer needs to go for those with professional aspirations. He had a few European offers when he was 17 or 18, including from some big clubs like Shalke. He chose to go to college instead and has turned into a good player, but has some major mechanical issues. You have to think if he played for Shalke his first touch and finishing would be much better.

and yes, Rubio Rubin, Maki Tall, and Paul Arriola will all be great choices at forward in a few years. The U20 team was robbed of a world cup because of a fluke injury before the tournament started to their key midfielder, Russell Canouse of Hoffenheim. His replacement was AWFUL with tons of turnovers. It was such a star studded team and a shame they only made it to the quarters.

Pirlo

Pirlo

He's just an absolute wizard, isn't he? I am so excited about him in MLS.

One of my favourite Pirlo performances was against England in the last World Cup. He completely dictated that game.

Here's what Paul Scholes had to say in the run-up to that match:

Andrea Pirlo will "destroy" England if Roy Hodgson does not deploy someone to man-mark the Italy star at the World Cup, according to Paul Scholes.

Scholes thinks the Italy midfielder will pose England the biggest threat when they take on the Italians in their Group D opener in Manaus on June 14.

Pirlo may be 35-years old, but former England midfielder Scholes still regards him as "the world's greatest playmaker".

"Pirlo is the complete footballer. Give him time and space and he will destroy you. He's such a clever player and is so composed. If surrounded he'll lay it off. If he's got room he's devastating. Even though England's Euro 2012 game against Italy finished 0-0, we paid nowhere near enough attention to him. Pirlo is not renowned for his athleticism, and he's 35 now, but that day he ran 11.58 kilometres, more than any England player. He also had more passes (131) than England's four starting midfielders. Roy Hodgson seems to have underestimated him in 2012, which surprised me given Alex Ferguson tactics previously to stifle Pirlo. We cannot make the mistakes of 2012 again."

My two favorite Italians are unquestionably Pirlo followed by his complete opposite, a midfield wrecking ball, Gattusso.

Can't wait till Atlanta get's their team. Have a feeling that Blank will spend the dollars to bring in some talent in.

New stadium is going to be bad@$$. Starting to come together. Walked around it after the US/Jamaica game last week.

Thanks for the note LA.
I'll say one thing, if Blank goes out and gets some top Hispanic talent, ATL will be a success. A ton of fans here, especially Mexicans. Gold Cup semis were crazy. Much more spirit and electricity for the MX/Panama game. Several of my MX and PR pals are counting down the days to 2017. Not a Falcons fan, but can't wait to take in some MLS games at the dome. For me personally, I'd love to see some Italians and Germans.

Alright... all this talk about Italian midfielders gave me a case of the vapors...

So. Whose y'alls best midfielders since mid 1990s? Any role but I want your best 4 person midfield. I am willing to take a two deep but I want a starting 4.

------------------------Xavi---------------
Ronaldo--------------------Gerrard------------Zidane

I love Schweinsteiger, but I'm a Germany fan. Not the most educated, but I'd say some good ones are Robben and Iniesta. Silva and Vidal pretty good too.

aha, id even have Scholes in ahead of Stevie G friend!

You are dead to me. A Manc??? Lol

I love Scholes. Gigs less so. Scholes gets my Lunch pail award. Busy, hard worker. I don't see Keane at all as being a better midfielder. I guess he had more domestic success with manU but technical ability, skills, consistency... I think Gerrard was one of the best.

aha not a ManU fan by any means but I still always admired Scholes' game and Keane was just the fulcrum of everything they did for whole time he was there.

They were totally different players, weren't they? We are comparing a 6 to an 8. Keane was a hard-working, hard-nosed, intimidating defensive midfielder, but he had nowhere near Stevie's passing ability and ball-striking ability. Stevie is one of the top 5 passers I have ever seen, no question. Such precision, especially in long passes.

But Stevie to Scholes, that's a debate.

I like your selection here, but as others have stated, take out Stevie G. Roy Keane is teeth, and to have a successful midfield, you need that grit- and no one is tougher than Keano! Scholes, I'd agree with as well.

If I am forming a team, I almost always take Messi over Ronaldo; just a better teammate. If I am looking for raw skill and athleticism, I take Cristiano.

Here is my favorite lineup for the past 2 decades ish

--------------------------------Eto'o/Henry/Ronaldo---------------------------

----------------------------------------Xavi----------------------------------------

Cristiano/Zidano--------------------Pirlo---------------------------Zidane/Messi

---------------------------------------Keano-----------------------------------------

Maldini-------------Cannavaro------------------Nesta-------------Roberto Carlos

FWIW... I think of Gerrard and Keane as distinctly separate types of midfielder. They don't even play the same position. In my midfield I have a Gerrard as an AM which he was boss at and Pirlo as my DM which not only is he far superior to Keane offensively, in longevity, and stats, he is far superior to Keane in overall sexiness.

So I guess you guys should be arguing over swapping Keane and Pirlo, not Gerrard. I have Xavi as a false 9 and Gerrard as a No. 8.

Gerrard never played for a team that sang a real version of YNWA so he doesn't count... ;)

If we expand it time line wise I'll take Jimmie Johnstone over Nedved and move Zidane over to the left...

That's fine boss hog... though your lack of any Celtic players shows clear bigotry...

I can't go without a striker on my list... just me, plus Eto and Henry were already mentioned so...

I see now that I put 5 down and asked for 4. I'm a idiot. If it's four then I lose Gerrard and keep Xavi.
