Can we PLEASE stop talking like Tiger is a threat in big tournaments now?

Match Play, he is a disaster as a pro.

Winless in Majors over the last four years.

He just does not have the same mental edge over other players anymore. There is no more fear factor amongst the top players anymore like there was five years ago, that is for sure.

He might win one more major in his lifetime at this rate, but with the new young blood on tour now, I would not bet on it. The field seems like it has gotten immensely tougher, overall from top to bottom, and that is GOOD for golf.

Good for golf? Not according to TV ratings.

Good for golf? Not according to TV ratings.

Was Jack battling Arnie, Lee, Watson et al good for golf?

YES.

The same will be said for this era of new blood that is going to build on the back of Tiger's successes and then some.

Do you HONESTLY think that ABSOLUTE dominance of one sport is good for ANY sport? (RIVALRIES drive sports and the crop of young players that are out there now are much more likely to develop them, than when Tiger dominated the sport.)

No, because ratings are NOT what drives sports. Relationships with the players/athletes do and the rivalries they promote make sports fun.

And sorry, it has been FIVE years since Tiger has won a major, so can we please stop waiting for him to dominate the sport again?

He is done dominating golf, DONE.

If the ONLY reason that people watched golf is because of Tiger, then fck them, they are not GOLF fans.

I hate golf with a passion but my dad and uncle watch it all the time, otherwise I would not even know who these guys are. That and the fact they push golf on you so much via ESPN, etc.

And the fact that I am sports nut is the only reason that I know about the older golfers. That and Arizona Tea.

Dufner was just on Howard; good interview. Nothing shocking coming from Dufner (shocker, of course), but it was cool to hear some behind the scenes talk about coming up the ranks of the pros and how the mini tours are basically "legalized gambling."

Shot an 82 yesterday, which was by far my best round ever. Everything just clicked, I made my putts, and only lost one ball on the 16th hole. What i was really pleased about was my ability to scramble after wayward tee shots and approach shots. Felt really good.

Tiger was hurting today.

Which is scary to think about. All four days his back was hurting and he still finished T2. I know he hasn't gotten over the hump at majors, but even with a stiff back he played really well. I still like to think he can win a few more majors in his career.

Hell yea! Thing is though the field is a lot thought then it used to be when he was winning a lot IMO.

Well he is still winning an extraordinary % of events he plays in, so he does still "dominate." The problem still lies in the majors. I think some of that can be attributed to his incessant desire to hit driver when he can hit 3 wood with much more accuracy. It can also be attributed to the courses at the 3 rotating majors. Some of these courses don't match up to what Tiger is able to do, whereas Augusta suits him very well. These next few majors seem to fit him better so we shall see. You are right though, the competition has caught up.

When you have to put the word dominate in quotations marks, then you are NOT dominating.

The field has totally caught up to him. IF he wins five more majors, I will be surprised because now the field is as tough as it was back when Jack and Co. were playing.

Tiger's time was nice and all, but his era of DOMINANCE is long gone.

Played my first 9 holes of the season this morning and didn't break 50, so not a bad start for being rusty.

I'm in the market for some new irons. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Went to Dick's sporting goods over the weeked and swung the Taylormade Burner 2.0 clubs and they felt solid -- considerably better than the off-brand irons I've been using for the past decade. The great thing about these clubs is that they are under $300. Anyone got any advice on other brands to look at?

Edit:

I have a friend who's a better golfer than I am and he loves his Burner 2.0s.

Thanks Kuehnja. That's where I'm leaning right now, but if anyone has any others that would be good to look at, let me know. I've always sucked with my irons so I'm hoping an equipment upgrade will help with my confidence on those shots.

Equipment upgrades absolutely make an impact on your game, however, you can't rely on just the upgrade. I suggest going to the range a few times after you purchase the new irons to get some wrinkles out, and even consider a lesson or two with them just to see if some tweaks are needed in your swing. I was amazed at how better my shots were when I upgraded, but when I also got a few lessons with them it was even better.

Thanks GowND11. I will definately make it out to the range with the new clubs once I purchase them. Hadn't really considered lessons, but that is definately something to consider. I typically shoot in the low to mid 90s. I'm hoping this year I can get in the 80s consistently. Right now, those "good rounds" are few and far between.

Anyone watch the Arnie documentary on the golf channel? Arnie seems like such an awesome guy and has done so much good.

I got the Burner 2.0s when they came out and I love them I switched from an adams set a few years ago and noticed the ball flight on them is better and the distance got longer. I just regripped them this past winter but that was after 3 years so the stock grip is great. If your looking for others I would say stick to taylormade but thats me being biased because thats all I play

Get fitted. That's my only advice. Not everyone is built the same physically, nor do they have the same swing path. If you get the 2.0 iron set, take it somewhere and have them modified to fit your build and swing. It'll be worth any extra cost.

Yes. Or just save money and upgrade to a $500-$700 set off ebay. But either way, you have to get fitted.

I took this out of my OP because I couldn't find them for under $300, but I see you can find a 6-piece set for $300.

I bought these new last year and love them. Hit great and more importantly, they're the coolest looking iron on the course everytime I'm out.

AMP CELL Irons - 6 Piece Set | Cobra Golf

I got the silver/white ones because any of the colored ones would clash with my ND golf bag, but if some of the colors match your bag, they look damn good too.

I'm hearing this a lot. Everyone who I have talked to who have used Burner 2.0s says they are great clubs and a significant upgrade over whatever they were using previously. Thanks Fitzy.
