Is there a description of their formula anywhere? I tried looking at the FPI page but couldn't find anything. It really makes me think the same way about the allstate playoff predictor. That at this point in the season, the underlying numbers rely more on opinion and a wet thumb in the air, rather than anything substantive.

SP+ is a similar ranking system that explains its methodology quite a bit. It had ND move backwards from 7th to 8th after this win as well. Basically the computer did the math, and said "ND would have only won that game 40% of the time," so it reacted accordingly. It's important to remember that these are formulations designed to help people know what to expect when two teams play (read: it's meant to help gamblers decide how to bet on a spread more than actually rank the teams). It's not meant to be a determination of who the best team is, who has the best resume, or who deserves anything.

Bingo. They also try to take the luck out of the equation. So the Wu fumble recovery for a TD was taken out of the final score in FPI, so they "count it as a Clemson win." Its certainly an interesting system, but as you said it's more about the spread, predictability, and gambling than ranking the teams.

Just saw Golic is getting let go? WTF. ESPN has done some boneheaded things the last 5 years, but this has to be one of the bigger ones. It's funny that Greenberg wanted his own show, threw Golic under the bus, and it turns out the Get Up show sucks. Why? Nobody wants to listen to Greenberg. Here's hoping Mike lands somewhere he's appreciated.

He's been doing radio for over 20 years, so if he's rusty in the booth I get it. I only saw him do a few games, but he didn't seem that bad to me.

Me either. I’m not saying he’s Romo, but he’s not bad. Plus he’s got other abilities that ESPN can use. He’s infinitely more likable than Kellerman or SAS for instance. That being said I don’t even watch ESPN anymore unless it’s for a game. I’m tired of being preached to about politics. I prefer Golic in the booth over Aikman for sure.....

Is this the time Dan Dakich finally gets the pink slip? I personally can't stand him as he thinks his "take" carries more weight than it does and he is just awful. But how many times can he be in the news before ESPN finally says enough?

I dunno. Dana Jacobson fucked up a few times and they let her hang around for years. Of course, the first strike was being a bigoted Michigan grad.

I listened to Dakich last week for the first time in over a year. Kept it on for about 20 minutes and changed it. Having said that, I read up on the controversy and this is much ado about nothing IMO. "Woke" educators being way too sensitive.

Yup. DD is a bag of Summer's Eve, but woke folk shouldn't be surprised when they get into it with shock jocks.

And just in general, fuck ESPN.... and that includes DD. And all the woke folk.

Big 12 vs Disney. Who runs out of money first?

Big 12 and the overmatched Bob Bowlsby? Versus Disneys Big pockets that used to be bigger before Netflix and Amazon Prime Showed up?

Reminiscent of "fox hunting" Often translated as "the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable>"

Spoke at the FW big brothers big sisters dinner this year. What an icon and great man.
He's awesome. He's often at my grandpa's church down in Florida. He says he was always showing off his grandkids, holding them up for people to see and chatting with parishioners. When @arndtjc and @Irish#1 and I were at the Cinci game 2 years ago he was in the gold seats with us just a few rows down. He stayed for quite a bit after the game to talk with people.

Interesting read. I haven't had ESPN for about 10 years.

I read the entire article. I'm having a hard time understanding the ultimate purpose other than to say: ESPN isn't what they used to be, they've tried different approaches to increase growth and they've largely been unsuccessful. The entire article felt like a former employer writing for the catharsis of saying, "I was told not to tweet political things and I didn't like it" and then somehow tie that to ESPN and the general market trends related to cable customers/streaming, etc.

I think I missed something or I'm not the intended audience.

I came away with the same feeling, it was a strange progression. I don't think ESPN was wrong in what they did. If the author was alluding to that ESPN has gotten worse because people aren't allowed to express their opinion, I disagree. There's certainly a case to be made for ESPN not having an answer to the streaming movement in the market, but if they think more political opinions are the way to go then they're very mistaken. I cut the cord a few years ago because I was tired of ESPN catering more to opinion and outrage and less on sports itself and highlights. I don't miss it, there's enough offerings on other platforms that I've gotten by just fine without them. It doesn't hurt that ND plays on NBC and more often than not on ABC or occasionally CBS.

He's saying go woke go Broke which is playing out everywhere. But He's a half witt, confused liberal so he beats around the bush. That's what he's trying to say but can't quite find the words.
