Any insider information on the possible IRISH jersey's come next Saturday? Rumblings around the forums (shout out to my boys at Irish Envy) are that it could be something, the likes of which ND has never done??P.S. I'm sorry you get asked the same questions over and over, week after week.

^Nice!

Itchynut (IE)

How long do you seriously think we will be able to keep Bob Diaco upstairs in the booth running our defense and not on another team's sideline as a head coach?I'll set the over under at 2 and take the under.

Matt Fortuna (2:21 PM)

Itchynut, definitely an interesting question. If he keeps it up and continues to harness a lot of the young talent ND is stockpiling defensively, I can see others calling in a year or two.

^This another IE member?

There are a lot of jobs that are probably going to be opening up around college football...What do you put the odds that Brian Kelly has enough of ND and jumps to a gig like California or Arizona?

seriously???!!! SMH

Shouldn't we be worried that once Floyd is gone, we have no big play threat.

<<<-------- HEY!....That's my line under my name

My family watches Christmas Vacation every Christmas Eve and Day. It's tradition, and a movie that we find a lot of parallels in. My pic is going to be changing to something from that movie over the holiday season.

Cousin Eddie, who has a heart bigger than his brain, was certainly on my short list. I was also thinking crazy Clark, when he snaps after the jelly of the month club membership. I may prefer the "Shitter was full!" picture, with the **** hose in his hand. "I'd like to fumigate this here chair, Clark, it's a high quality item."

New goals for Irish with BCS out of reach

October, 24, 2011

With Saturday's loss to USC, Notre Dame needs to quickly rebound against Navy.Brian Kelly and his players openly talked about their BCS-bowl dreams during the summer, after two season-opening losses and again in the midst of four-straight wins.

That chatter is now on hold with a 31-17 loss to USC, a defeat that all but eliminated the Irish from the "playoffs" they so often spoke of being in during the pursuit of their goal.

Kelly downplayed the BCS carrot angle Sunday when asked if he has to find something else to dangle in front of his players after a 4-3 start to the season.

"Quite honestly, and I'm just telling you the truth here, the dangling of the carrot is more about a sound bite," Kelly said. "It's not what we do on a day-to-day basis. We don't come to practice dangling that carrot. We come to practice saying we've got to be more disciplined with our eyes, we've got to do a better job on route adjustments. We're just so focused more on the detail that I think we look too much into those sound bites as to each and every week, each and every day is for us the most important thing.

"We've got plenty to play for. We've got plenty to play for because when you're building your football program you're building pride in what you do. And I think that's the overriding factor is that our guys have an immense amount of pride in what they do, and they want to get better at it."

In other words, there is plenty of season left, at least five games that will shape this team's fate in one way or another, whether or not the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla., seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.

With plenty of young talent on the current roster, plenty more on the way for next season and a harsh schedule looming in 2012, it is fair to wonder if Kelly will have next year in mind when making some personnel decisions during these last five or six games.

Kelly, as to be expected, said that wouldn't be the case.

"It never gets to, I think I said this [Saturday] night, I think you guys have more of a global view of everything," he said. "We just don't operate that way. We're dealing with a day-to-day process. We're looking at how we can improve, how we can stop Navy. We really don't get into that. That's good talk for the radio shows and the pundits; they can talk about that stuff. We just don't get into those kinds of conversations. We keep it really focused on the day-to-day."

Kelly said he would use the rest of the season to continue to build his program, by which he would ultimately measure his success. Three losses seven games into Year 2 put him a little behind schedule.

But one, two or even three more defeats would make the current situation seem like paradise, which makes righting the ship this week against rival Navy an important first step in the rest of a season that, in much of the public's view, is already lost.

Atkinson making mark on kick returns - Notre Dame Football Blog - ESPN

Atkinson making mark on kick returns

By Matt Fortuna

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- George Atkinson III's dad retired on top.

George Jr., a former all-pro defensive back with the Oakland Raiders, raced George III and twin brother Josh only once, when his sons were around nine years old.

"He actually beat us," George Atkinson III said. "I hate to admit it, but I was really young."

Father never raced son after that. Not that he would have had much of a chance, anyway.

Seven games into his freshman season, George Atkinson III has already returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, something only three other FBS players have done this year. The first-year player out of Stockton, Calif., ranks ninth in the nation in kickoff returns, averaging 30.37 yards per return.

Notre Dame's George Atkinson III returned this kickoff 96 yards against USC.And he is already halfway toward his combination of four kicks and punts returned for scores at Granada High School.

"They stop kicking to you once in a while," he joked of his prep days.

Atkinson's 96-yard touchdown late in the second quarter Saturday breathed life into a Notre Dame team that saw itself fall behind 17-0 to USC. The defense then made a quick stop and the offense drove for a field goal to make it a seven-point game before halftime.

Against Michigan State five weeks earlier, Atkinson's 89-yard kick return in the first quarter followed a Spartans touchdown and gave the Irish an early 14-3 lead, one they never relinquished in their first win of the season.

"Going back to Michigan State, that was my second return, so that really builds trust in your blocks," Atkinson said. "And they do a great job out there holding out the blocks and things like that, and getting me onto the kicker.

"You only get to the kicker so many times, so I know you wanna win when you get there."

That breakaway speed has become a trademark early in his career, and it's something Brian Kelly said separates him from other kick returners.

"Obviously there's no substitute for that," Kelly said. "But he's also got pretty good vision. He's been able to see blocks, the setup of blocks, and you've got to have great vision as a kick returner as well. So I think the combination of the very good vision, we've done a nice job schematically of blocking, and then that second-level speed."

Added special teams coach Mike Elston: "He's a very rugged runner. He doesn't look to make a lot of moves and he's an extremely approachable kid; he's gonna do it exactly how we ask him to do it. And he's got great vision."

Atkinson, whose future is at running back, knew any chance he had to make an impact early would come on special teams.

Because of his success there so far, he has had the chance on multiple occasions to look up at the Notre Dame Stadium scoreboard and see his mark.

"You definitely start thinking then, 'I'm here, it happened,' " Atkinson said of his touchdowns. "So it was a great feeling celebrating with your teammates. I always like looking up at the scoreboard looking at seven. You got seven points up there because of special teams, and it's a great feeling."

Irish recruiting update

October, 27, 2011

What, no commitments yet?

As our Jared Shanker points out, that's rarely the case in the immediate aftermath of a big weekend, and Notre Dame has little reason to worry after last Saturday's showcase.

Good news could be on the way soon, however, with four-star wide receiver Jordan Payton. After seeing Notre Dame up-close this past weekend, Payton delayed his originally scheduled Tuesday announcement.

Payton, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound wideout from Oaks Christian (Calif.) High School, is deciding between the Irish and Michigan at the moment.

The second-thoughts of Irish commit Chris Brown, a three-star wideout from Hannahan (S.C.) High School, seemed to have died down a bit as well.

Shanker compiled a list of reactions to this weekend from all over the country, as the Irish brought in recruits from seemingly everywhere.

Among the highlights:
•From the East: Keith Marshall, ranked No. 6 in the ESPNU 150, had a great time during his visit.
•From the Midwest: Joliet Catholic (Ill.) junior running back Ty Isaac has been to many ND games, but he said this one was special.
•From the West: Zach Banner, an ESPNU 150 member, said ND's tradition set it apart from other schools.
