if it was clearinghouse, i think ND would have reported the issue. ...

Me too. That's why I mentioned Wisne.

I don't think (but can't confirm) that Clearinghouse issues come under the Federal law putting a gag on a school discussing student's academics. Clearinghouse isn't about college grades. That issue has been widely reported for years.

justin utupo is sidelined now because of a transcript and it has been made public.

Was not aware of Utupo situation. Did he report it himself or did Kelly report it?

Notre Dame freshman Utupo awaits clearance - Chicago Breaking Sports

August 24, 2010
By Brian Hamilton

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Justin Utupo might not contribute more than scout-team performances to Notre Dame in 2010, but the school is working to ensure he can do even just that.

The freshman linebacker from Lakewood, Calif., did not practice Monday or Tuesday as he and Notre Dame worked through "administrative matters" that the school was hopeful to resolve in the next 48 hours, according to a football team spokesman.

It appears to be an issue with the NCAA's initial eligibility clearinghouse, with Utupo's records from Lakewood High School being reviewed, though the school would not confirm that.

A former Lakewood teammate of Utupo's, USC freshman quarterback Jesse Scroggins, was recently sent home after coach Lane Kiffin said the NCAA Eligibility Center would not certify Scroggins to play. The optimism that Utupo could return to practice this week suggests Utupo's case may not be as dire.

The first and last sentences seem to me to be in conflict. The first says he may only be scout team indicates he's not currently practicing. I understand a Clearinghouse issue making him ineligible pending clearanace. IF he is I'm not sure how he could practice later unless it's resolved. And if it's resolved he can play in a game.

Unless I read the Kelly comments about Banks incorrectly, Banks only shot this year was scout team.

When Rice was a Prop 48, I believe he wasn't allowed to practice as a freshman. He had to study - full time.

I read Scroggins as a different magnitude as he was sent home from Ballroom U.

Banks is enrolled at ND.

Read a couple updates on Utupo (wrong thread, I know), but the Rivals staff seems to think this may be an error on the part of his HS. He's currently having issues with the NCAA Clearinghouse. I wish I knew more about this process, but I don't. BGIF points out that his former HS teammates were also caught up in this mess. Scroggins & Kevin Anderson of ASU are all being held up by this issue. I think this matter will just take a little time to push through the NCAA Clearinghouse

Very weird... can someone explain to an uninformed person hear exactly what the clearing house does? I thought to be eligible you just needed a 900 SAT or something to that effect.

The NCAA clearinghouse is a tricky beast, many times targeting certain classes that are used as safe havens for students trying to get eligible. Utupo's profile as a student-athlete doesn't match-up with Scroggins, so as Hamilton points out, hopefully this means a quick resolution for Utupo.

Brian Kelly Transcript

Transcript Written by Jerry Strabley

Q. What is the situation with E.J. Banks?

A. “We’re going to bring him out as a scout team player next week, Tuesday, and we expect him to come a do a great job for us.”

Q. Can he compete or just practice?

A. “He cannot compete, that is correct. He is no longer on scholarship. He is paying his own way here at Notre Dame by his own decision. He wanted to come back to Notre Dame and he wanted to be on the team and he wanted to prove himself. So he’s going to get the chance to prove himself academically and on the football field.”

You know what I like how EJ is handling this. A lot of kids would have transfered to JC or something, but the kid wants to be a member of the school and the football team. He is going to work hard to get that scholarship back that he lost. It shows his character (RKG). Hopefully he continues to work hard and we see him on the field next year.

What's going on with E.J. is he now on the scout team, paying his way? I saw in a rivals article it mentioned that it was good to land the Atkinsons because of the loss of EJ and Spencer, making it sound like EJ actually left after all or something.

Last I heard, he was paying his own way to ND and on the scout team.

That sucks. Was hoping he would make it back to the team. Must be a grade issue or something along those lines. Best of luck to him.
