Didn't see a thread (except one from 2007) on this, but apparently a December early signing period is in the works.

CCA committee leaning toward recommending mid-December early signing period for college football - ESPN

I don't know if I have a great understanding of what all this actually means so I would appreciate a summary but my first thought was that this was good for ND but I'm not so sure...

1. We probably gain more recruits in January than we lose
2. This would probably just effectively push forward what goes on in late January to late December. So I don't know what practical effect this will have.
3. I think we all hope we will have more postseason success going forward. Early signing would negate any benefit we receive from winning big bowl games.

I had a quick question that pertains to this topic but didn't want to start a new thread for it. As the rules are now, can a player enroll early and eventually sign an LOI with a different school and go there without losing a year of eligibility?

I think it would be in addition to the traditional signing day.

It would allow guys to sign early that have been committed and have no intention of wavering. In that regard, it would allow the staff to focus on those last few recruits without worrying about a "solid" guy getting poached at the last minute. For example, Mora has been contacting CJ Sanders. If Sanders could have signed as part of an early group in December, that wouldn't have happened, and the staff expends less resources making sure Sanders is still in the fold.

I like the idea and thinks its a step in the right direction. However, I'd like it to be a little earlier. I think the end of November that way kids have time to take OV's and put together a thoughtful decision yet there is more time between this signing period and the Feb NSD.

While on topic, I'm starting to wonder about how NSD became what it is today. It's not a deadline, it's the FIRST day that kids are allowed to sign... What turned it in to the hooplah that it is now?

Was it a steady transition from kids committing to coaches, or did some big event occur on a particular year that set a (bad, IMO) precedent?

Not usually, once you enroll in classes you are effectively under scholly. You would have to sit out a year as a transfer. This is kind of what happened with Prestwood if I recall correctly?

I see. I think I still agree with my original thought that this would likely just push up the decisions and most of the same problems would still exist. Plus now coaches are going to have to spend more time recruiting during the season rather than during January when the season is over. I don't know if I like that.

re: 2. I would think it would be hard for your traditional power programs to do their "January Push" in late november/december with bowl games, and holiday dead periods tho right?

A early signing period will only get the kids that are 100% certain where they want go. This will get the other coaches off their back, unless your name is Mora.

I assume the dead periods would completely change if this happened?

In basketball a player can still get out of his early LOI, but they also don't have early enrollees. If you sign during the early signing period do you have to EE or can you sign in december and still finish your last semester in HS?

I think another benefit is preventing some schools from just offering everyone under the sun, getting some commits at positions of need, and then cutting ties with those commits with lesser "star power". Lax posted an example of this in the Oversigning thread. If the (and I can't believe I'm going to use this word about a potential recruit) "threat" of a commit-able offer for a lesser player is around for an early period, some schools may be more inclined to hold off on offering every player they can.

Just asking.

Bringing this all back to student athlete, how does this correlate with early acceptance of the unwashed masses of non athlete Early Admission applicants?

I have no clue. I'm just curious. I'm also lazy. Perhaps others will do the investigative work.
