Diaco Makes a Poor Decision

That play had no chance from the get go because a timeout was called. I think they might have had a shot if there wasn't a break between 3rd and 4th down.

I don't know of that was a poor decision. Obviously it didn't work out, but it sounds like he didn't have any confidence in his kickers. Maybe it would have been better to try to run a play, but just lookin at the score I assume that 4 yards would have been tough to come by. It didn't work out, but not an objectively poor call.

Considering what most expected from UCONN this year, I'd say that was a good performance overall. Actually, he should be getting some credit for having his team ready and prepared to battle that closely with a top 25 team.

Great job holding them to 9 points. Cheering for Bob all the way.

I got no problem with the decision Bobby D made.

I feel different about his self-aggrandizing, elitist, self-important, "I am the all knowing center of the universe" self justifying tweet.

It is times like these that I am so glade Bob Diaco is no longer with the Irish program!

Go Irish!

Mizzou was gifted their TD drive by the refs anyways.

BVG has a long long way to go before he is a better DC at ND than Diaco, just saying.

Should've just stayed in his offense. The fake was a poor choice (and poorly executed), but going for it was not.

My choice would have been to take the FG and take my chances in OT.

looked at the kicker's stats

He is only 50% on XPs this year, and missed 3 XPs last year

He is perfect on FGs this year, but hasn't attempted anything over 40 (it would have been 42 on Saturday). Last year he was 4/6 on FGs over 40 yards.

I can see why Diaco might have hesitated; this kicker is erratic (although perhaps the XP misses are due to a terrible snap or hold)

He seems to have the recruiting aspect down, so there's that.

I knew in saying that this would come up. I am by no means saying I was happy with Diaco's recruiting efforts but most of BVG's impact players are Diaco's recruits, so there's that. The player that coach Kelly said he's never coached a player like him before, Jaylon, came to play for Diaco, so there's that.

Not to wade into a "who's better Diaco vs BVG?" argument, but I don't really recall Diaco being a big part of pulling Jaylon to ND initially. I do remember that when Diaco got the UConn job, Jaylon had a few tweets, but was never clear if it was because of the FACT that Diaco was going, or the WAY that it transpired (ie. the way that Jaylon found out).

From the thread title I expected this to be a retrospective about him taking the UCONN job to begin with...

They have had one blocked XP in each of their 3 games this year. The team has two kickers, a long range kicker and a short range kicker. The long range kicker had already missed one kick, and they had had one XP blocked already.

On their last drive UCONN was playing 4 and 5 wide and moving the ball better than they had all game aside from their TD drive. They were at 4th and 5 after an incomplete pass, a drop, and a QB scramble for 5 (where the QB slid, making you think he was expecting another down).

The offense stayed on the field for quite some time after the play, a timeout was called, and then the short range kicker came out to kick a 40+ yard field goal aka NOT his specialty. In other words, the chance to even make the field goal from that far out was low due to his team's bad protection AND his kickers being highly inconsistent from that range. And hell, Mizzou is the more talented team and better at driving 25 yards than UCONN so playing for overtime was a bad move anyways.

There was still over a minute to play so the correct move was to go for it. The incorrect move was trying to fake a field goal on a team that knew they A) had to put little effort into even blocking the damn thing B) knew you probably couldn't make the kick to begin with and C) knew your best shot of winning the game was in regulation.

So the dumb move was trying to fake a field goal. Going for it was the best move, but stay in the 5 wide because minus a drop, you were moving the ball well on Mizzou and had a QB that could scramble for the 5 if need be.

when I saw the thread headline, I thought this was a discussion on Diaco's decision to leave ND

I'll never understand this decision. If you are planning on going for it and not kicking it, why aren't you running an actual offensive play? They had 1 timeout left. Regroup, pick your best 2 or 3 plays. Get a first down and get right back to the line. Clock stops on a first down..

Mind boggling.

I'm fairly certain that was all BK and Jaylon would have come to ND regardless of DC, but maybe you're right. Either way, I'm not impressed with either's efforts in that respect and jury is still out on BVG's effectiveness as a gameplanner. I never hated on Diaco's style, but I wasn't sad to see him go either. I think his success was LARGELY due to multiple NFL talents in the front seven - same can be said for our secondary's success, namely KVR. All in all, I don't care who the DC is as long as they don't LOSE games. The O can win games, all the D needs to do is hold their own. I think Diaco and BVG are capable of that at ND with what they have to work with.

I like what Bob is doing. Seems that UConn is moving in the right direction, but it is going to take a long time. His decision to go for it was correct, but as others pointed out, it was best to just go for it without a fake.

Chalk that up to being an inexperienced head coach. Lesson learned.

He put his players in a position to beat a top 25 team, and had the balls to say we are going for the win now. That will resonate throughout the locker room and hopefully the players will feed off of it.

Surprised nobody mentioned that the fake was the second fake of the day. Diaco's D frustrated Mauk most of the day, but good gawd is UCONN terrible on offense.

Like others have said, the only poor decision was a fake vs normal play. They needed to win in regulation, with the way their offense was playing I don't think UConn could have pulled out the win in OT.
