Still don't see why we don't bring back Bob Diaco. The dude has great hair and did well in 2012.

Does the fact that Purdue’s defensive coordinator Bob Diaco was fired after just one season with the Boilermakers make you really want to pursue him? I think that I would pass on entering the thought to interview him for DC.

That, and did it really work in 2012? I have a weird black spot in my memory of how that season ended, but I feel like that may have been a smoke and mirrors + weak schedule type of season...

C’mon, that was a great defense. Didn’t play a single cupcake all year. Held 7 teams to their lowest point total of the year. Our ML finished 2nd in the Heisman. Plus, our offense was mediocre. Sure, Bama kicked our ass. No surprise there.

They're doing a real search. Doesn't mean they won't ultimately settle for an internal hire, but they've definitely had conversations with Elko and Freeman. They want somebody whose system will work with the current roster they've been recruiting to for four years now.

Are you even an ND fan? We had one of the toughest schedules in the country in 2012---Phil Steele's #1 SoS ranking, actually. We played and beat 2 P5 conference champions. You can say a lot about that season, but a weak schedule isn't one of them.

Does Elko have HC aspirations like Freeman does? If between the two, I like Freeman more but he feels like a one year rental. If the team may regress next year, I'd rather not have a one year rental at DC.

Considering how well the safety’s and the dbs played in 17 under elko, I’d take him back in a heartbeat. Elko and Mickens and elston is a great start to a defensive staff.

Yeah I guess it was. That championship was just so brutal to me. I was a believer. I thought ND was back. I thought that D was going to shut Alabama down.

Apparently I had blinders on my blinders. Because the game happened and Bam! in the face like a Jackson Pollock.

Yeah he reportedly does want to be a head guy too. I feel like you can't even consider that these days though. Coordinators leave, it's just the nature of the business. Other than Venables, pretty much every coordinator from a top 10 program bounces after 1-3 seasons.

Freeman would probably be here (or at LSU) for 2 years tops. I also am not a huge fan of the 3-3-5... the 4-2-5* ND runs seems to work much better for generating organic pass rush and run defense. Just need to have a "ROVER" that can do it all, and ND has had no problem recruiting to that position.

Elko would probably be the same, but he'd likely groom the next guy up while he's hear and he'd keep running the same system.

Freeman was basically running a 4-2-5 prior to this season. Then he got creative trying to figure out a way to stop UCF, came up with his 3-3-5... and then never stopped turning to it lol.

I think he's versatile and smart enough to adjust his 3-3-5 back into a 4-2-5 if that's what BK wants, though there is something to be said about being ahead of the curve on a nationwide-trend towards 3-3-5 defenses.

But Elko obviously presents greater continuity regardless of Freeman being able to run whatever BK prefers.

I'd take Elko as long as it looked to be a "guarantee" that he's be here for a min. of 2-3 yrs. I agree with above post ... I don't want to see a 1 yr. rental for a DC. Heck, 3-4 yrs. from now Kelly's HC job may be available. Something for the next hire to consider.

The 3-3-5 is interesting in terms of is the success due to its lack of popularity compared to a base D or 4-2-5 or is there actually more effectiveness there. Syracuse for example even caused some confusion against not just us, O was just abysmal.

EDIT: Many places that run the Rocky Long 3-3-5 will do it out of recruiting need though. One we should not have.

As an offensive lineman, I hated playing a true 3 down front, and our line was absolutely useless the one time we played a 3-3-5.

A true 3 down front can be difficult because so much of the run game is going to require you to get to the second level instead of simply beating a guy in front of you. It then gets in your head, because their speed beats you a few times so you go early before the first level is fully taken care of and then the d-line can cause problems.

With the 3-3-5, the team we played stacked the linebackers which made getting angles on them damn near impossible. Wanna run a pin-and-pull? Their LB is through the hole before your lineman. Wanna run zone? The middle and backside backers will scrape and clog the line. Fuck it, run a gap scheme dive with a FB lead blocking. Congratulations, you got a one-on-one match up for your RB......with two safeties coming to clean it up.

I haven't been able to watch much of the 3-3-5 being run in college now, but I feel like it you put some of these modern, athletic, hybrid linebackers out there with it, it could be a devastating defense. Guys like JOK, Marist, etc. would be a pain to gameplan for and even worse for a presnap read.

That is why smaller schools run it in relation to recruiting. It’s A) harder to recruit 4 P5 type DL and B) You can pick off hybrids others pass on

Defense also gave up 414 yards to a terrible Syracuse team. What the hell changed on defense post UNC? Honest question, because the last three games this team played, the defense didn't look anywhere near as dominant as they did the games prior.

Guys were maybe hurt, tired. Who knows.

I just shudder at the thought of anyone who is left being promoted from within. Not this time.

If it's Freeman or Elko, sign me up. I'd be so happy with either I couldn't care less which we get.

Highly doubt it's going to be Freeman based on his options and having a hard time seeing Elko happen simply based on finances. Elko really willing to take a pay cut to come back to ND?

It’s been brought up a few times but apparently he’s not very happy in Texas. I think ND would up the ante some to make the move more sensible. So I mean if he’s not happy or fulfilled where he’s at, a move may make sense especially if it’s because his family isn’t happy. ( I have no idea if his family is unhappy just making a point that there are other factors that can lead to a change aside from just money)

He doesn’t need a zoom interview to find out what the job pays. If it went this far they’ve already addressed the pay issue IMO

It feels it's a little disconcerting that we're about 24 hrs past this proposed meeting with Elko and no follow up, anywhere.

I missed the days when potential new would be “spotted” walking around town. Is Stoops still having lunch at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe?

Nothing happened, ND just doing its due diligence by interviewing a couple of external candidates who are at the top of their game.

This is a fact. The strength coach at NDSU has apparently turned down P5 jobs for ridiculous raises because....he is divorced and wants to be around his children who live with mom.

Money is a big thing but worth remembering these guys are people too.
