Would be interesting. He was a way better safeties coach than Joesph in my opinion on top of being a good DC. Who would coach linebackers?

He brought Tyler Santucci from ND, as a Grad. asst., to A&M and made him LB’s coach. So I would think he’d do that. But if not, I know they are really high on current grad asst. Nick Lezynski.

So, Lou S at BGI, is saying he’s also hearing this has some legs.

Now I’m officially intrigued because he’s not one to speculate.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

As others have pointed out exploring a lateral move like this is going to burn his bridge in College Station. I highly doubt this meeting is happening if Elko isn't intending on making the move.

Burn the bridge? Like the one he burned to ground in South Bend, twice IIRC. He is a really good DC. Jimbo wouldn't be pleased, but there us a reason ND worked with him initially before he went to Aggie land.

I just can't shake the feeling he is using ND to leverage more money again. Isn't his contract up now? What better way to get more $$ than to pit the schools against each other again?

Just as a food for thought thing. Check out the recruiting by Elko’s defense at Texas A&M over the last 3 cycles. It’s pretty ridiculous. 12/13 4*-5* recruits at DB is crazy and is Bama/Clemson-like recruiting for a position group. 11 4*-5* recruits along the DLine in 3 cycles is pretty wild too. Funny that LBer is not far from ND’s LBer recruiting in that it’s a mix of 3* and 4* with some guys being a great fit for this 4-2-5 scheme. Elko would be the homerun hire for ND no doubt about it. He’s a top end recruiter, great DC and would be a phenomenal fit. I’d imagine that would spell the end for Terry Joseph unless he’s moving to LBers but I’d imagine that would be the ND GA or Santucci at Texas A&M

Either a great recruiter or Aggies have taken over Texas recruiting from the longhorns.

Kelly can't be dumb enough to allow that to happen, can he? After all, he was in the middle of it the first time around. I'm thinking, (hoping?) Elko called him, says he was wrong, I see you have an opening, take me back. Money's going to be similar or it doesn't go anywhere.

Like the guys said above, if there really is a meeting (Zoom, I presume) its pretty much a done deal, just working out the details.

Love the idea of replacing Lea with the guy who brought us Lea. They must share philosophies, right?

Could Kelly just be picking Elko’s brain about system fits or DCs who run a similar system? I don’t think we should assume this is an interview

Aggies overtook UT years ago on in-state recruiting. Their main competition for Texas high school recruits comes from Bama, OU, and OSU. ND's presence in Texas has really declined and they are rarely a factor with the elite recruits here. The other factor here for Elko and his recruiting at TAMU is that he is able to recruit players that ND isn't able to recruit or attract, and TAMU has indicated that a championship football program is the goal(see salaries of coaches and facility/stadium upgrades).

Could be sometimes these major schools that recruit at a high level, everyone on the staff has to be on the same page what exactly they’re there to do. Maybe Elko likes recruiting one way, Jimbo doesn’t mind his staff doing it a bit different way (wink, wink)....

Jay Bateman the UNC DC who has been mentioned is a interesting case to crack. Top 10 Ds at Army but a small asterisk due to O style of play. Moves to UNC where the cupboard was left bare talent wise. D is improving and turning in a decent Havoc rate but the #s aren’t pretty, how much due to talent deficit and O style of play shifting the complete opposite?

This was my original thought but if it’s just to pick his brain, wouldn’t a phone call work?

Yeah I also don’t think it would be leaked the way it has if it were just a phone call about picking another coaches brain. Those things probably happen weekly. But again what the hell do I know lol

Lezynski will be a full-time LB coach somewhere. The question is will it be at ND or Vandy?

The “meeting” is a Zoom call no? It’s not like he’s traveling up to South Bend. A zoom call versus phone call aren’t much to find a difference in.

Jay Bateman would be a plan C or D choice for me . . .

I don’t think there’s been any indication either way. Just that BK and Elko are connecting today. OFD said “they’re meeting” and didn’t elaborate what kind of “meet” they’re having.

It could also be related to Elko’s desire to be a HC somewhere.

He was connected to a few jobs last cycle, but didn’t get anything. No mentions of interviews this cycle.

Perhaps BK put in a call and said, “I know you want to be a head coach. The guy that replaced you here spent two full seasons as our DC, and he got that chance to be a HC despite having less overall DC experience than you. Come back here for a pay raise, stay another year or two, and maybe ND can help you out with finding an opportunity more than A&M has.”

Maybe Elko knowsA&M is an NCAA investigation away from a dumpster fire. Maybe he knows they are just a season or so away from a serious decline back down to the middle/bottom of the SEC West.

Related:

BK must really be doing his due diligence already, because some guys in the know on the UC side are saying that ND is one of four big schools putting on the full-court press for Freeman (to go along with LSU, Auburn, and now Texas).

FWIW Loy has been re-tweeting completely random Elko tweets seemingly for no reason whatsoever.

But can he recruit? We need our next DC to be a dog on the trail.

Those better at measuring recruiting would know better, but that FR CB the tv broadcast loved to bring up was a 5 star CB. Looks like 4 other top 200 D recruits. This year, another 5 star this time DE, 3 other top 4 stars
