1. We had terrible starting field position all day long and yet we only gave up 17 points, with 7 of them coming on great field position after Golson's fumble.

2. I thought we did a much better job against the pass, and without Slaughter, no less.

3. We defended the run excellently.

Discuss.

Defense did well but we will still have problems just trying to squat in a Cover 2 if our corners can't tackle well. Blanton and Gray tackled, which is why that worked out. Now we are getting some pretty solid pressure but it still won't be enough if we can't tackle. They did a good job, but we'll have to continue to improve. Experience will help that, but with this schedule, there will be little room for error.

Defense played their hearts out without KLM and Slaughter. Where is Chase Hounshell and how has Tony Springmann surprassed him?? Also i saw very little of Ben Council today it seemed.

Nix and Tuitt pretty much saved the day for us on defense.

We fought.

We fought hard.

I know it was a weird victory, but it was a hard fought victory.

D was decent, B. Jackson had 2 picks (looks good on paper, heh)
I'm looking forward to Wood coming back.

Let me break it down this way:

We have a great DLine.

Outside of Te'o, we have no other guaranteed reliable starter at LB. Fox/Carlo are playable, but nether fills me with confidence. Shembo can rush off the edge, but he's not elite.

Our secondary is seriously weak. Zeke made some great plays but missed several as well. Our corners need to grow rapidly because our schedule only gets tougher. Jamoris is a huge blow if he's out.

-That turnover at the end really upsets me
-Hoping for nothing serious in terms of injuries
-It's exciting to see this many young guns do well on defense
-About Tommy!

Purdue is a good football team. I like their defense. This is a really important win for us.

Go Irish!

Once again Diaco gets the game ball. One of the touchdowns was entirely the fault of offense screw-ups --- asking WAY too much for the D to stop things on a short turnaround and a short field. Also earlier in the game, lack of KO contain by Jalen Brown gave Purdue about 40 more yards than necessary. Purdue scored from there too. Tuitt and Nix get game balls. Motta actually played well and should get his props cleaning up a lot of messes.

With competence on offense and the kick-off return, the D would probably have given up one score all game. We don't always look the prettiest, but we are still one of the best on that side of the ball. As to everything else today.... no comment.

Except: like it or not, Tommy's late drive was kind of storybook. And to Goodman and Toma... RICH Irony.

The defense won this game

I couldn't agree more. Bennett Jackson was solid. Elijah Shumate played well. Tuitt and Nix should get the game ball. Their pressure on the quarterbacks was the key to slowing down Purdue's passing attack.

Well said. We have a really good D line, but many of our LBs are pretty terrible in coverage and our secondary is probably the weakest spot on the entire team. We're great against the run, but our pass defense makes me very nervous.

Overall the D played well today though. Tuitt and Nix wreaked havoc.

Hounshell and Springmann play different position. But, I agree, where is Hounshell, especially today without KLM and Day.

Spot on.

I am curious if the coaches are not noticing how much Carlo/Fox are struggling in coverage. What explains the defensive formation that has Carlo lined up to be one on one on the slot receiver on the 4th and 10???? I think we need to play the young LBs or it will not matter how much our secondary improves with experience.

I think Purdue is going to be a pretty good football team this year. The score was a little too close for my comfort, but we won and beat a decent football team. I'll gladly take the win.

Great Job by the Defense. It would have been nice if they would have stopped Purdue on that 4th down but anytime they hold a team under 20 i am perfectly happy

So we lost 5 starters and still won.

I'll take it.

THIS. If you told me at the beginning of the year that we could roll out that many true and RS frosh with no Jamoris Slaughter and still play very, VERY solid defense... I'd have called you crazy. Elijah Shumate, Russel, etc. all really stepped up. That sack by Russel on the corner blitz was fantastic.

I thought the corners played a lot better today. They just need to improve their tackling. Several broken tackles on the edges cost us big yards. Motta had a nice day, though.
As for the LBs, it would be nice if someone besides Teo could actually make some plays. Trying to figure out what happened to Ishaq, who seemed to be on the field a lot but was pretty invisible.
The d line is the single biggest reason we won that game, especially Tuitt and Nix.
