I am really tired of this argument. I am not going to find my previous post but outside the USC and now the Pitt game, when else did we win in spite of him(and in both of those games he came up big at the end)?

Every game we have one has been in spit of him and everyone else on the team it a team effort. The ball is in his hands everyplay and along with the Wood and Gray he is the reason for pointing points on the board.

There's no "in spite of"... Cold, hard facts....The kid is 6-1.

If Tommy improves his ball security and his ability to find the 1-on-1 matchups, we could win out and make the BCS. All the other pieces are there for a BCS run.

Do I think it's likely to happen? Probably not. 9-3 or 8-4 with a Champs Sports Bowl berth against the #3 ACC team seems much more likely to me, which is still improvement over last season.

And Dayne throwing the ball at receivers' feet and then sailing them over their heads doesn't? And Dayne throwing the ball out of the endzone with the game on the line doesn't severely limit our offense? And how about when the chips are down and Dayne folds like a cheap suit, as he has done repeatedly (I've pointed these out numerous times on this thread)...are you seriously saying that doesn't limit our offense? OK, so Dayne can throw the ball a million miles. That means jack when A. you have no touch, B. your accuracy suffers greatly when on the move, and C. you can't handle adversity.

OK, name the games where we've won in spite of him. You and Jonesman keep saying that, and yet you never name the games: USC, Pitt, and, and, and, and....nothing. That's 2. He's won 4. I'm no mathologist, but I'm pretty sure 4 is greater than 2.

Two of the top 3 teams in the country have quarterbacks that are as good as Tommy Rees. So your some of your claims don't make sense to me. Put in a true freshman who might have more ability wont work right now. Rarely do true freshman qb's come in and light it up like you think Golson can do. Hendrix might be the answer but there are reports out there that he can make all the throws sure but he also makes a lot of dumb throws. Tommy Rees is our quarterback and will be. He might be a turnover machine but hey Rex Grossman lead my bears to a Superbowl. Plus he is 6-1. I dont care if he doesn't throw 400 yards a game like Tony Pike he still wins. Lights are too bright for Dayne Crist and there not at all for Tommy.

Most of this discussion is people yelling past each other addressing two different issues. Issue one: will Tommy ultimately develop a consistency this year to allow our team to show all the firepower it has and be able to go toe-to-toe with anybody.

Issue two: regardless of issue one, is Tommy the best choice for quarterbacking this team now in the pursuit of immediate wins.

These two "problems" are not very strongly related. But continuing to mix them together is like fire and wet leaves --- much smoke, no light.

This whole thing reminds me of the Grossman issue back when the Bears went to the Super Bowl a couple years back. Lovie Smith kept saying "Rex is my QB! He got us here!" when in reality it was the Defense that got them to the Super Bowl. Much like BK is saying " Rees is our QB and he is 6-1 as a starter". It is the Defense, running backs, and receivers that are keeping us in it and winning these game DESPITE Rees and his freaken turnovers. If Rees stays in as starter I just hope the rest of the team elivates its play to cover the a@& of a below average QB. GO IRISH!!!!!!!

P.S. Grossman SUCKED!! IMO

Might as well remove this thread to avoid more pointless babble. BK said Tommy is the starter no question and that is good enough for me. They said Pitt did things that was completely different then what they had prepared for. Took them most of the game to figure it out, BK included.

Rees is a sophmore, has thrown a TD pass in 9 straight games, something Brady Quinn, Jimmy Clausen, and John Huarte (I think it was him) have done at a longer streak. He doesn't fold under pressure either which is something that can't be taught and he already has that. The turnovers is something that can be improved upon.

Bottom line, this argument is silly. He will be the starter with no change in sight. He is not as bad as some make it out to be and he is not as good as we need him to be at this point. He is 2-1 this season as a starter and would be 3-0 is the defense made a stop in the last 30 seconds of the Michigan game.

Tony Pike ran for over 350 yards in his career at Cincinnati; his net yards don't reflect this because of his sacks and kneel downs. Although not a great runner, he could tuck it in and run. He could also throw the long ball to stretch the defense.
The spread offense offers three problems: multiple receivers to create mismatches, the threat of the long ball to keep the safeties honest and deep and the threat of the QB to tuck it in and run and/or perform the read-option. Tommy can do one of these things in an average to below average way, and he turns to ball over big time.
If Kelly plans to stick with him, he should go to a power I and pound the ball to take the pressure off Tommy to run the (for him) impossible offense.
Or play Hendricks. I think if he had we probably would have done better; I doubt if we would have done worse. If Hendricks had taken all the snaps with the first team in fall camp and in the season and played all the games, I don't think we would be looking for a better answer to our QB problem. Dayne showed the same problems last season before his injury and there was no reason to suspect that he would overcome them this year; and he didn't. And Tommy neither could run the ball, throw the long ball nor eliminate turnovers last year and there was no reason to suspect that he would develop these skills this season.
I think we missed the chance to go into next season with an experienced QB with three years in the system, at least twelve starts and the required skills to run the spread offense.
Tommy next year will still be unable to run it. Dayne could but.......

Great comparison. The only difference is that Rex turned the ball over on deep balls (basically a punt) and Tommy turns it over on fumbles/short throws.

Hey HereComeTheIrish, you say with the ball in his hands he is 6-1? Lets be more specific. When Tommy has played for a half or more in a football game he is 6-3. The Tulsa Game he played all but the first series I believe, and the South Florida game he played the whole second half.

Regardless, he turns it over toooooo many times.


Oh well, we have to ride Tommy and I hope he gets better. We certainly need him to if we want to take it to the next level.

This board proves one thing, there is a lot of passion for Notre Dame. And we all love the Irish!

Go Irish, and hope Tommy gets it together.

Duff, what stats are you looking at. Worse stats in every category? I guess if you don't look at Yards per game, More TDs, Less Interceptions, more yards. Oh, you are correct he beats out Dayne's percentage 1.8%. So, you can overlook that if you need. And no worries that great stat of 6-1 as a starter had nothing to do with the stellar defense during that time. Oh, well you hate Dayne and love Tommy. You have the perogotive. But, saying Tommy is better in every statistical category is just 100% false. Absolutely false. Do

Oh, and look at the rushing yard Tommy loses there too -2 to 74 4 TDS for DAyne and 0 for Tommy.

And I am one who thinks our best QB is on the Bench. I think Andrew may be our best QB overall. I just when you say what you said on the stats thing you are totally ignoring the actual stats.

Haven't been on here in a while, but figured I'd throw in my two cents on this issue.

First off I'm glad to have a solid defense with QB play that needs work rather than the inverse. That being said watching Rees is unbelievably frustrating.

Yes he is 6-1 and besides the turnovers his stats look rather solid, but he is an extremely limited QB.

For one he is extremely turnover prone and has shown no signs of getting better at taking care of the ball. Have we won with his turnovers? Yes, but we can't continue to count on the defense to bail us out and at some point (Navy, SC, Stanford) the defense won't be able to overcome those turnovers if they aren't fixed.

Secondly he has limited arm strength and this is a huge issue. Does our QB need a Matt Stafford arm? No, but he has to be able to stretch the field and take shots vertically to keep the defense honest (especially with Floyd/Eifert) and take some pressure off of Wood/Gray. You can point all you want to that throw against MSU, but he has done that only a couple of times in his career. I'm not saying our QB has to be Quinn/Clausen esque either (we were spoiled with those two btw), but you have to be able to make a couple of throws of that magnitude every game (especially with the weapons Rees has) and Rees hasn't shown that ability at all. We haven't played one good pass defense and he hasn't shown the ability to make those throws, the dude has arm strength better suited for the MAC or the Big East and thats just being honest.

If I'm a defensive coordinator against him, I double Floyd (ala Pitt) and make him throw elsewhere. If a defense takes Floyd out of the game the kid is absolutely lost. Great, he had a nice drive at the end of the game against the WORST PASS DEFENSE in the country, the rest of the game he looked like a JV QB who got thrust into action of a state playoff game for the varsity.

I love Rees attitude, his confidence and he can be pretty accurate, but if he is the QB for the next 3 years Brian Kelly probably wont last too much longer. Rees is too physically limited and way too turnover prone to get us to the elite/BCS level we need to reach. He needs to start giving Hendrix and/or Golson some packages to see what they can do.
