It's sad that in a crisis such as this, litigation worries are so prevalent.

I'm a business owner and this pandemic has already taken a real toll. We had to give layoff notice to about 30 employees last week. We are currently classified as essential services.

Small businesses (in Canada) have been the low hanging fruit for many litigation lawyers and Human Rights Tribunals.

From the information provided thus far, and dependent upon its veracity, there appears to be 2 parties that are culpable (1) the Chinese government and (2) The Word Heath Organization.

If justice is to prevail, these parties must be held to account.

COVID-19's death rate is nowhere near what's being reported. They did some free testing in Iceland and something like half of the people tested were entirely asymptomatic. We're vastly under-measuring total cases, meaning we're vastly over-calculating the death rate.

I've mentioned testing speed and availability as primary to opening things back up. The NBA is now assessing rapid-tests as a potential way to get back on the court.

The pregame changes..... show up, shower, and be quarantined. Get tested and wait on results (guessing less than 5 minutes). Go warm up with others post testing. Play game. Get tested again. Go home. Rinse repeat...

Have you been able to access the loan assistance program yet the CRA is facilitating? Has the wage subsidy kicked in for your business?

I had a client nearing retirement just close up shop last week and will liquidate the remaining inventory.

Saw it's trending positively out there in AB. Get things back soon so the stampede comes back!

Thankfully, my partner is a CA and is well on top of things. As you know, Alberta has had a pretty rough go over the past 4 or 5 years. Oil prices are complicit but this pandemic really hammered out any optimism or investment capital in the industry. On a consolidated basis we are probably (revenue wise) 85% reliant on oil, gas and mining with the balance coming from food production, construction, tech and agriculture.

I probably share to much on this forum...LOL. We will be fine but some tough sledding ahead.

Very sorry to hear that your business has suffered such a downturn and you had to layoff so many workers.

Here in the U.S. we may be one of the few countries that ties health insurance to employment, so many of those laid off are scrabbling to get coverage in some way in addition to filing for unemployment benefits.
The last two weeks here 10 million have lost their jobs and 3.5 million of those have lost their employer sponsored health insurance. (Economic Policy Institute)

Are those Canadians laid off able to maintain the same coverage, providers, med benefits etc.?

So, I have to differ with Oahu on "triaging based on the assessed value of one's life" or "triage policy". Even with a homeless John Doe, who has no family that can be reached, and has signs of brain death, must have an appointed guardian to assist in making decisions on necessary life support measures. Those are then reviewed by a judge under most state laws and will then make his/her decision. Of note too, one out of every four hospitals are now owned by the Catholic Church and guided by their religious dictates.

I believe the Emergency Declarations and Presidential Proclamation essentially remove this normal fail-safe, however. The burden and responsibility of the community health apparatus becomes ensuring that the whole survives, not the individual, per se. That code I linked in my response to Wizard, 42 U.S. Code § 247d–6d, essentially states that as long as there is no willful misconduct, you're immune to suit and liability.

I'm not a lawyer, though, I could be wrong. That's just my interpretation of it.

She claimed we weren't essential and needed t close immediately. We have a number of customers that are currently making respirators, a DoD contractor and several other large companies that are deemed essential business. So Friday she has a melt down and goes off on her manager because we are still open. It was sad to hear this because she was a very good worker and typically a quiet person. This pandemic is effecting a lot of people in different ways.


Saw on the news some companies are using cell phone tracking data to determine how well each state is practicing social distancing. For the most part every state sucks.

Imho, we need to have news that Is non-profit. We as a society can not keep this news-cycle. We all need facts not opinions!, and if they went non-profit It might get ugly in the beginning but podcasts and real human interaction with real stories would change people quickly.

Michigan here and its yes for all three.

Same for Ohio. They encourage you to stay home, but it's restrictive when you do go out. You can't sit in restaurants, it's take out only and in some cases drive thru only. For sit down restaurants, many with two entrances now have an "Exit Only" and "Entrance Only." I went to one last night where the doors were propped open so you don't touch them, and they had arrows taped down to the floor to show you where you stand until your food is ready. Take out orders were huddled together on a large table, all other tables in the restaurant are gone.

Stores have Entrance/Exit only too. Wal-Mart has locked all their entrances except for one, and even that has been sectioned off with carts so one sliding door is entrance only and the other is an exit. Other than that, shopping hasn't really changed. For some reason self checkouts are allowed to operate normally, people aren't 6 feet apart there.

You can go to a park to walk, but you can't do anything else. Amenities like fountains, playgrounds, picnic areas, etc have been roped off with yellow tape to keep people away. There's even a small, private park behind my house that has been roped off.
