My piggy bank is finally full so I'm ready to buy my first pistol. I've narrowed it down to a Glock 19 or a Colt Government Model 1911. Give me your best pitch on why I should choose one over the other. I fired 100 rounds with each yesterday and I was comfortable and reasonably accurate with both.

Note that I don't plan to carry, the primary purpose would be range shooting and home defense. Also, the Glock would come with Connecticut-compliant ten round magazines, so the capacity difference is narrowed considerably.

I own both, and shoot them both pretty regularly. My grandfather's 1911 is aesthetically superior, the softest-firing .45 I've ever used, and as an heirloom, it means much more to me. Though that's specific to my particular 1911. Assuming yours isn't an heirloom, it should be a pretty easy call in favor of the Glock19 for two main reasons: (1) 9mm is a lot cheaper and easier to find than .45 ACP; and (2) Glocks are Lego guns that you can service and modify yourself after watching a few Youtube videos, whereas 1911s need somewhat regular attention from a good armorer to maintain.

Counterpoint: 1911s are cool as shit and Glocks are sort of ghey.

Can't argue with that. I did say that the 1911 is aesthetically superior.

But guns are tools, so aesthetics only get you so far. Especially if you're paying ~65% more for ammo and limiting your practice as a result.

How would I achieve that, exactly? And even if I did, how would I ever shoot it, exactly?

Go Glock. Like Whiskey said, much easier to maintain. I find the Glock more accurate, if not the most accurate. The only guns I found to be as smooth and accurate (while also being reliable) as Glocks are Sigs and HKs which both have higher price tags.

If you're not gong to carry, I'd suggest the Glock 17. If you're all about the range and home defense, go with the full size. It'll be more accurate than the shorter barrel.

You can get other mags easily (like ND said). Doubt anyone at the range is going to check your mags, but I don't know CT. And you don't even need to the larger mags for the range TBH. I assume you'd want them for home defense "just in case". If that's the case, no one is coming to your house for a mag check.

Joking aside, I know some who opt for the 19 over the 17 simply because it's easier for their wife to fire and she might need to use it at some point. I opted for the 19 because I carry occasionally, but if this was strictly for home defense, I'd go for the 17 too.

And then once your piggybank is full again, slap an RDS on it.

How about the argument that 45 ACP is a better home defense round because it's fat and slow so there's a lower risk of it blasting through walls and hurting an innocent?

Buy hollow points for home defense. Use FMJs at the range.

Bear in mind that if you don’t hit your target, the round is probably going to go through a wall regardless.

Not sure about the risk, but the 45 will typically be less accurate and harder for the lady in your house.

Very true and good things to consider. I will say that I bought my mom a 26 (with a mag extension) several years ago. Before I bought it, I took her to the range and had her shoot a 26, 19, and 17 (as well as other calibers and brands). She was most accurate with the 17 in range conditions, but preferred the "feel" of the 19 and 26. I think she ultimately picked the 26 because it fits best in her purse, and she can add on extension easily. At home, she has it in her drawer, loaded with HPs in the extension.

As far as the RDS, if truly for home defense, I'd go first with a light attachment or laser. Most home invasions happen at night. RDS is a must for daytime and range though.

Any round that could stop a bad guy is going to pass through drywall with ease. You just have to be aware of what's beyond your target.

Assuming premium JHP, all of the major service calibers easily meet the FBI's benchmark of penetrating at least 12'' and expanding at least .5'':

A better argument is don't miss and always know where your loved ones are. If they are directly behind where you are firing rounds, move if possible. 45 will hit innocents just as easily.

High powered bb guns could probably get through drywall.

I'm going to pull a Koon. I asked for advice and now I'm going to entirely ignore it.

I'm getting the Colt. I get all the reasons you guys laid out for the Glock but this is a gut thing. Firing both, my instinct with the Glock was "this is fine," and my instinct with the 1911 was "this is awesome." I think it's because the polymer felt like a toy more than a weapon.

Now I just need to find one.

That's fine. You'll be compromising somewhat on ammo cost, maintenance/ customizability, durability, and performance, but the 1911 is undoubtedly a sexier pistol. As long you practice, it should serve you well.

Yeah! Why buy one boring ole glock when you can get... everything!

I have a few already, but the others were inherited so not what I would have chosen for myself. I'll definitely be filling up a safe over several years.

I agree on this, but I'd still make the Glock the first purchase. I'm going to bet Wiz will be lusting after and RDS, laser, light, etc.. Much easier and cheaper to get those for a Glock. Ammo cheaper too.

Glocks suck. Get something over-engineered and quality like an HK for not much more.

Ended up getting the Springfield Armory Range Officer 1911. They're doing an "instant gear up" promotion where you get a case, range bag, five magazines, holster, and mag pouch thrown in. MSRP was $940, got it for $800 with all the extra crap so I feel pretty good about it.
