Thanks, Whiskey.

The M&P 9C looks pretty decent.

Looks like I'll have to take a drive to the gun shop again.

Yup. Just take 'em for a test drive and see which one you like best. M&Ps have excellent stock triggers, which seems to be a strong selling point for most. Of the two, an M&P9c feels better in my hand, but I consistently shoot better with the G19, so I stick with Glock.

Seriously considering getting on of these:

Ruger® SR9c® Compact Centerfire Pistols

I've heard some good things about it. Has anyone gotten one recently or have any alternatives that are in the same league?

If you're looking for a compact 9, I'd go with a G19 or an M&P 9c.

Great suggestions. I'd also like to suggest any of the Springfield Armory XD series of pistols.

I'm more of an XD-M single stacker in .45 type myself, but if you're looking to carry a compact 9mm, they offer the XD-S in 3.3" and 4.0" barrel lengths.

Just picked up an FN Fal Parts kit! Pretty stoked about the build. I will be sure to post before and after pics. Only bummer is I ordered the upper receiver and its on a 90 day backorder.

I am considering getting an archangel stock for my mini14 (which is one of my favorite guns to shoot) but I'm not sure how difficult it is to change a stock. Can I do it myself or do I need a gunsmith?

Swapping out a stock should be pretty simple... just a couple screws and maybe some pins.

The Promag stocks are good quality and have excellent fitment. I have an Archangel stock on one of my rougher '43 Izzy's (holy shit the Nazis are coming/Stalingrad built as fast as possible Mosin Nagant) and it was very easy to install. Shouldn't prove too difficult and certainly doesn't require a gunsmith.

Well, well, well I broke down and bought a Glock 17 Gen 4 today after years of not owning a gun. My wife and I were having too much fun lately at the indoor range. They're putting a green guide rod laser on it for me, so I know my wife won't miss if she ever needs it.

I've been shooting for a number of years and have yet to shoot a Glock. I'm sure they're great guns, I just am not a huge fan of the strykerfire internal hammers, more of a DA/SA kinda guy. I've been eyeing a Rock Island Arms 1911 recently however, and would love to own a 1911 platform.

Well I have been chomping at the bit for this build but the new receiver doesn't arrive until mid-Aug. I have all the pieces prepped to refinish the metal and polymer furniture. I'm thinking a matte OD green furniture and dark earth metal.....but still thinking.

Here is a pic of what I'm working with and I will post picks after (note the de-milled receiver, cut in three pieces)

Now the metal is all refinished along with the furniture, just need to time the barrel and check headspace. This gives you an idea of where it was to where it is going...

Finished the build on this rifle a little while ago but just took it out to stretch its legs this past weekend. Had so much fun! FYI - the mag is a CA legal 10/30 Promag. It is not actually a 30 rounder. I just think the small 10 round mags look lame in photos.

Nice weapon. What kind of Upper and Lower do you have? After this FN build I think I may start myself a lil side biz and get my ffl.

Thanks, its just basic. I didn't get too fancy or crazy with this build. It is just a Rock River Arms upper. The lower is an 80% lower that I machined myself. It has a CMMG lower parts kit. This is my first AR, so I didn't put too much money in to this one. My next one will be a little more high end. Possibly even an AR-10. I was thinking about doing an AR pistol, but decided against it because it would ultimately be just a novelty gun.

Awesome man, you can't go wrong with a Rock River (my 1st AR is a Rock River). I am shopping around now and researching possibly doing a MKIII Sten build, while keeping my eyes peeled for another good deal on a FN FAL parts kit. Post the pics of you next build and good luck!

Kind of a newb here with this but shot a .40 this weekend.Also shot a 9 and a .45.

To be honest, wasn't sure what the guns were but the friends I was shooting with were explaining them and with all the adrenaline it went in one ear and out the other. I do remember talk about a Colt 1911? Apparently I shot it.

I have a huge fear of guns for personal reasons but, to me, no reason I should avoid them. It was a great time. My buddy dad had some sort of shot gun he shot and when I asked what would you use that for, he basically said nothing good!

What I do know is I shot 60 round through all 3 guns and hit the "red" roughly 48 times. (same hole hard to figure) Pretty proud of my shooting and so was the guys working the range.

First-time gun owner, on the market for a full-size 9mm handgun. Target shooting, home defense, will not CC.

  • Safety
  • Feel
  • Accuracy
  • $500-ish price point

  • Glocks don't fit in my hand well.
  • The trigger safety only on the M&P makes me nervous.
  • I like the grip safety and tougher trigger pull on the XD.
  • I still want to shoot a Ruger 9mm and the Beretta PX4.

I know I have a lot of shooting/research to do still and I know it's relative to the actual shooters/owners themselves. But I'd still like to hear thoughts and opinions.

The best 9mm on the market in terms of function, reliability, and quality is the Heckler & Koch VP9. It was the gun of the year from guns and ammo a year back. I've recommended it to a few people that I know and they have all loved it. One of the best triggers on the market too. That's by far the best gun in that price point of any caliber.

Good luck.

Take a look at the Sig P226 (Prices per model very a lot) you can find reasonable used ones sometimes.

The believe you can get some S&W M&Ps with a thumb safety.

XDs a solid guns for there price point.

Thanks guys. I'll see if the range has any in stock that I can test. (Hopefully H&K has no affiliation with the Koch Bros. Would be an immediate no for me based on principal alone :usa:)

The trigger safeties, I'm sure are fine, but since I'm a first-timer and I have a kid, my number one priority is safety and the idea that one can simple pull the trigger w/o flipping a switch or depressing a grip safety bothers me a bit.

Yes you can get the M&Ps with a thumb safety. I have a M&P Shield .40 that has a thumb safety on it. I know you aren't looking for a carry weapon, but for anyone that is, it conceals nicely and S&W .40 is easier to get than 9mm when there is a run on ammunition. The down side is it holds one less bullet than the 9mm.

Just purchased a Springfield XD-S 9mm 3.3 this weekend. Seems to be the perfect size for me to carry. As far as home defense, my fiance seems to think we should invest in an assault riffle....
