As a guy who spent most of his life in PA and lives in the Philly burbs, I can summarize this PSU coaching search clearly: it's a cult, an unhealthy one. Not a cult like LBU or DBU or Tight End U. A cult that still thinks like the year is 1994 and PSU is one of the best jobs in the country. A large number of people in central PA of all age groups have NEVER left the state of Pennsylvania. For some, it's like being stuck behind the iron curtain during the Cold War. They know nothing of the country or the world outside of PA.

This mindset trickles down to AD and search committee. Their level of self awareness doesn't align with reality in 2025. They probably assumed Freeman, Deboer or at worst Chesney would be tickled by the thought of the PSU job. They were wrong. All this after giving Franklin a ridiculous raise and extension in fear because he might have flirted with USC in 2021.

PSU is gonna be in football purgatory for years after this shitshow.

I think back to that Orange Bowl, there must have been a moment after PSU forced us to punt that the cultists thought it was finally their moment. They had their big time QB, recruited by their long tenured coach, on the field to drive them down for a game winning FG as time expired. The moment had finally arrived for them, it was all coming together.

Then, the rug was pulled and now less than a year later the football program is in absolute shambles. Brutal. I'd feel bad for them if they weren't the most insufferable fanbase in the leadup to the game imaginable (and the entire preseason and the first 3-4 weeks of this season). The superiority complex and unearned arrogance having beaten SMU and Boise to get there was shocking for me as I don't deal with PSU fans hardly ever.

I also grew up in PA but on the other side and your take is perfect. The only thing I can come up with is Cignetti or KDB is going to go...they just aren't as grimy as Kiffin so they are waiting. It's the only thing that makes semi sense at this point because it's been so ridiculous.

Edit... Cignetti was firing from the hip. He signed and extension and probably isn't going anywhere.

Those losers at A&M absolutely screwed us this past weekend. The committee had to protect bama only because they backdoored into the SEC title game.

A&M wins against Texas and goes to the SEC title, the committee doesn’t have to worry about the SEC game loser not making it.

If A&M won they'd be playing Alabama. Aub screwed us as they could have knocked out Bama and UGA would have played Ole Miss in the SECCG

Yeah, I’d argue VT has a pretty similar ceiling to PSU today assuming that they have a good coach and donor commitment to success. Both have similar access to talent and strong fan support, albeit PSU’s alumni base is larger and certainly more demanding today because of the success of the last 5 years.

A lot more money at Penn State and far greater opportunity in BIG than ACC.

It still absolutely boggles my mind that PSU thought that Freeman would be a serious option for them.

Just absolutely insane. The force of that delusion could stop a tank.
Is there any indication that the folks in charges at PSU thought he was a serious option?

Was it just folks trying to drive clicks?
