I thought I read that Golden was lied to about the impeding sanctions coming down on Miami. Sorta unfair to judge him from that if that was true.
He was lied to. But CFB fans are fans of their team first and only have a 20k ft view of other programs. So the particulars of why a coach failed @X is completely lost on them. All they know is he failed.

For instance Fran Brown IMO would have been the perfect guy at PSU to take over for James Franklin. He worked under Matt Rhule at Temple where they turned the program around. He was DB coach under Kirby Smart at UGA when they won the NC in 2022 and was named national recruiter of the year. He went 10-3 at Syracuse his 1st year and was poised to do better this year until his starting QB got hurt. They were 3-1 then they are now 3-4 and he's no longer an "it" guy.

Dude can coach, but according to some replacing Franklin with a coach who'll likely go 5-7 would be a tough sell.

Its nuts!

I am not sure Golden would take the main role in the recruiting scene.
As a head coach you have to, at some level, if you want to be successful. If not "the main role," certainly a major role. You're the face of the program and parents are going to want to meet the man they're entrusting their sons to.
And then of course there's all the media work, the boosters and alumni stuff. All things Golden did at Miami and knows he doesn't have to worry much about as a coordinator.

ESPN reported on Tuesday that it would cost Florida State $72 million to pay out Norvell and his coaching staff. Norvell has a $54 million buyout, and the other $18 million would pay off his coaching staff.
yikes, Norvell might survive, that’s a lot of cash.

Interesting tidbit I heard on a podcast today. Stephen Godfrey, who lives in Nashville and who had a kid play on the same team as Clark Lea’s kid, said he thinks Lea has no interest in leaving Vandy…with the exception if Notre Dame ever comes calling

I think we view Clark Lea how OSU fans view Freeman. I see them all over twitter shitting on people's takes that he could leave ND for the top jobs on the market right now, because they probably view him as their ace in the hole if and when Day moves on (and they may be right).

There is risk of that, although everyone also assumed for years that Dabo would be the next Alabama coach. I don't think Day will be fired from OSU. He might leave for the NFL but I don't know if he wants to. Of course, coaches rarely hang around longer than 10 years or so these days.

Article on ESPN ranks the current openings factoring in what qualifies them.
PSU
UF
OK St
Virginia Tech
Arkansas
Stanford
UCLA

I think a better way to frame that is "PSU and then the other openings". A good coach can figure out how to get PSU to 10-2/11-1 routinely and thus into the playoffs at least half the time. Florida is just too tough of a place -- if Urban Meyer went back there I bet they only make the playoffs half the time. Virginia Tech might be the 2nd best opening in terms of "a good coach can consistently get to the playoffs"

If Jerry Kill comes with Coach Lea, I'm all for it.

I like Clark Lea and give him a lot of credit for his career to this point, but he brought Jerry Kill into Vanderbilt with him and the results are probably not a coincidence. Coach Kill absolutely knows ball and can coach ball.

Had dinner last night with an FSU booster when I randomly ended up at a country club. Long story short, he told me the decision to fire Norvell was a done deal....Then all the boosters were reached out too and they couldn't come up with the money. He told me the Norvell will survive this year 100%. Not sure who this guy was, or if he is believable but this is what he told me just last night.

Edit: He also told me that the move was to try and bring Franklin to FSU

Lea is the first call if MF leaves. Period.

The estimate to bring in a new staff is $100MM, and then the Noles need to come up with another $100MM to buy their way out of the ACC in just 5 years. That's a whole lot of moolah that FSU has been struggling to raise for years.

That's great.

Clark Lea is 22-34 at Vanderbilt.

He's 13-7 since Jerry Kill got there as a consultant last year.

See what I'm saying here? I don't care if he's the first call or the tenth call. There is a very specific question I'd have for him.

Is Clark Lea bringing Jerry Kill with him? If Clark Lea is the first call, that is in my top five questions on that call. As an ND fan, I would gladly compensate Jerry Kill handsomely to come with Clark Lea if I hire Clark Lea as my head coach.

Hypothetically speaking. I don't want Coach Free to go anywhere any time soon. Hence the avatar change.

I mean, Clark Lea is turning things around at Vanderbilt. If he would listen to Notre Dame, I don't see how you don't reach out. He had the presence of mind to bring Jerry Kill in to help him. The only other guy who has ever really won at Vanderbilt is.....James Franklin.

id be worried about Elko's health in the long run, dude aint looking healthy at all and is getting worse every year
Was thinking the same thing tbh. The Phil Collins from Trailer Park Boys comparisons are becoming more and more apt.

By the time MF leaves we could be having a GM hot board and just hiring some play caller like the NFL.

I think that's where the sport is heading. Coaches job is to be a face, run practices, and make gameday decisions. GM builds the roster through transfer portal and owns the recruiting department.

This may end up meaning coaches contracts start getting reduced as their role shrinks and they don't "own" the whole program in the same way they used to.

Idk about the Franklin part, but, yes, the rest is the truth.

Everyone here in Tally knows the deal, and even the hardest of the hardcore Noles fans understand the reality of the situation. FSU boosters do not have money to fling around like that. They'll save the $10 mill and shit can him at season's end.

Most of them think Alford gets the axe at year-end, too
