What’s crazy about the Terry Smith thing is you are seeing a very organized coup of sorts unfold. The Paterno pin is clearly a play at a large faction of PSU fans and important boosters that still adore him. The speech here is clearly planned to some degree to emphasize that Smith has the locker room. If he has players and boosters? Only the AD is needed…

I don't know anything about Smith (the JoePa pin already makes me dislike him a bit), who knows, maybe he is a good coach, but for a fanbase that has been deluding themselves about Kalen Doboer for the past month, that would be a big gut punch. Similar to the Atlanta Falcons having convinced themselves they were getting Bill Belichik only to end up with Raheem Morris (I mean, BB wouldn't have been any good either so it's a wash I suppose).

I remember a time when Chip Kelly was the hottest coach out there.

I suspect after the playoffs - he'll be interviewed for one of the open HC positions... would be crazy if he went to P$U....

I don't see the guy who resigned a P4 HC job to be OSU's OC interviewing for HC jobs again. I think he'll land somewhere as a college OC. I think his NFL and head coaching days are over.

For that matter, why did he leave Ohio State? (I’m sure there were reasons.) Much better situation, competitively speaking, than the Raiders.

He’ll be a college OC if he wants next year, but it probably won’t be on a team that wins the natty.

I'd be so unbelievably in the mud if I were a Penn State fan. Keeping Smith as HC is the literal worst possible outcome after firing James Franklin.

It would be crazy. Was Rhule their only serious candidate? And maybe Key? There was a bit of noise around Lea for a bit, but that seems to have faded.
Is that really the best they can do?

If you were a Penn State fan, you'd be EATING UP what he just did this past weekend paying tribute to Paterno.

He's from PA, played for PSU and has been coaching there since 2014. I don't know about the internet crowd, but I'm going to guess that there is a good enough contingent of PSU fans that want this guy now and that contingent is likely going to grow in the days ahead.

And he might be the only person right now that genuinely wants the job.

Because the Raiders made him the highest paid coordinator in football at any level. A three year $20M fully guaranteed deal.

imagine paying $9M (post offset) to fire Franklin, only to hire his AHC with zero CFB OC/DC experience and zero hiring interest from any other CFB program in his 12 years at PSU. couldn't happen to a better group of people.

Agreed on both counts.

I haven't really followed him or kept up with him in years. Is he still even relevant in the offensive world, or has the game sorta passed him by?

Well, he did well enough at OSU last year, especially in the playoffs. Whether that's a function of having a loaded roster or not, I don't know enough to really say. I know it doesn't hurt. He's just not an NFL coach and struggles to implement his scheme at that level. The Raiders drafted Jeanty at 6 and CK decided then to chuck the ball 35 times a game with Geno Smith who legitimately might be colorblind and unable to tell which players belong to his team and which belong to the other.

I think he would be fine in college, but will probably be choosy about where he goes. I don't see him going to some mid level program as an OC just for the sake of coaching, but if an upper tier team calls he would probably listen. My impression anyway.

Justin Wilcox out at Cal. Former Wazzu HC Nick Rolovich is the interim.

I have to assume they call Tosh Lupoi and I have to assume Tosh Lupoi says no.

How about Tommy Rees? A step back into the college world and one on his way to being HC at a top FBS program. Why not?
I’ve been meh on him as a coordinator but I have a gut feeling he could jump into a HC role and thrive.

They also might have the worst offensive line in the history of the league.

He’s also 2 - 3 as the interim lmao. It’s not like this is some miracle finish

Yeah, I don't know if the game passed Chip Kelly by, but it's passed Pete Carroll by. The OL coach is his son and from what I can tell he's the JJ McCarthy of NFL OL coaches.
