LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Mike Riley lobbied for his return to coach the Cornhuskers next season after suffering a 56-14 loss to Iowa on Friday that capped the worst year of football at the school since 1961.
"When I go to bed tonight, I'll be hoping for that, because I would love to do this," Riley said. "I truly believe I'm exactly the right person to do this. The football parts, I've been doing it so long, we know how to fix, and we also are doing a good job recruiting."
Nebraska is widely expected to cut ties with Riley, who is 19-19 in three seasons. His team finished 4-8 this year, closing the season with four consecutive losses -- allowing more than 50 points in each of the final three.
The 64-year-old coach said he met early this week with first-year athletic director Bill Moos and received no indication of his job status. Riley said he has enjoyed his communication with Moos, hired last month to replace Shawn Eichorst, the AD who tabbed Riley in 2014 and was fired in September after Nebraska's loss to Northern Illinois.
Nebraska lost four consecutive home games for the first time since 1968-69.
Attention among fans and media has already turned to UCF coach Scott Frost, the former national champion Nebraska quarterback. Frost coached the Knights in his second season to a No. 15 ranking and an 11-0 mark after a 49-42 win Friday over rival USF.
UCF will play Memphis next week in the American Athletic Conference championship game.
Kliff is keeping his job you gotta think.

I'd be shocked if Frost is not the new Nebraska coach. So who goes to UF? Mullen?
I think Tech should go after Sumlin if he becomes available today. Already knows the land and a good coach.
Otherwise, they can lobby for the 10th best coach on the market.
I actually think that Frost to Nebraska makes more sense than Frost to UF, putting aside the fact that Frost went to Nebraska. Nebraska is in the awful B1G West where literally the only good team is Wisconsin. Recruiting is more difficult but Nebraska has the biggest name brand in the B1G West and has a name brand to rival Michigan and OSU. 10 wins a year is very achievable.
Then throw in the fact that Frost is a Nebraska guy, he'd get a hero's welcome and a bit of a longer leash. Plus Nebraska hasn't been really good in a while, I feel like the Husker fan base is willing to let the right guy build what he needs as long as progress is shown. Florida fans are still high on the memories of Spurrier, Tebow, and Meyer.
I think he takes the Florida job. All about recruiting.
Sure hasn't helped the last two coaches. Make Nebraska great again!
Chip Kelly picking UCLA over UF is not a good sign for the Gators. They're going to panic and pick Frost and if Frost spurns them then the perception is they are 2nd tier program. They may not be good again for a while.
Exactly. Just because there's not a ton of homegrown talent doesn't mean that Nebraska will always be down. One great hire can resurrect the program. Not to peak Osborne levels, but they can be nationally relevant again. The wisdom is that Nebraska is in a recruiting wasteland, but the right coach should be able to make them relevant again and be able to pull top talent from all over the Midwest and even beyond.
Frost will run to Gainesville to take that job.
You don’t think he’ll return to his alma mater?
I really don't. Unless he doesn't get the Florida job.
Interesting. I hope he heads to Nebraska and forces Florida to go dumpster diving.
Florida may go after Willie Taggart if Frost turns them down. I like Willie T and think he'd do well there.
Yeah they aren't going to be able to progress with that high school offense. It is fine for Navy or the service academies but GT is being held back.A school that needs to make a change is Georgia Tech. Paul Johnson and the triple option need to go.
