Polian leaving would be good for special teams, but terrible for recruiting. That being said, I don’t buy it happening

"It has been discussed" is about as vague sourcing as you can imagine.

I'm sure it has "been discussed," but - assuming ND wants Lea and (certainly) Polian to stay - those discussions are probably ongoing.

From the article:
It has been discussed that Notre Dame linebackers' coach Clark Lea and special teams' coordinator Brian Polian would be joining Elko at A&M and Polian was the Aggies' special teams/tight ends' coach in 2012 under Kevin Sumlin. Neither of their names in the Notre Dame coaching directory were linked to their individual pages as of this afternoon.

They are both listed here and Elko and Ballou are not so it looks pretty updated:

Of course it could have been updated after that article who knows. I almost regret even finding it lol because I don't want to get into that game.

I just want this team to continue to develop the toughness and winning attitude that they need to be elite. If someone doesn't want to be here, fine, go. Great culture can overcome the coming/going of individuals. I think they made a ton of progress in that regard this year and hope they can use this as some extra motivation to continue on that path.

There's something different now from the other day. Starting w/ Polian, all the bio pages are under edit. There are no bio pics for Polian, Lean, Alexander & Rees then all of the support staff after them.

???

Well they do have to fix them to reflect their new titles and everyone under them that has a new role.

Does anyone have an idea of who Notre Dame is actually looking at, or is it still all speculation at this point?

No idea but I think it would make most sense to higher Lea as your DC or let him and Elston share the duties. Biggest thing is you don't want to bring in someone and change the scheme up again after you recruited all these guys for a specific defense. I would think an announcement would be made by the end of the week.

Maybe to keep recruiting going well, and to lure Tranquil and Coney back, Jack and Kelly should hire a LB coach. Somebody who comes from an exotic coaching tree might be fun too, like Rex Ryan's tree. Having an NFL background might help make the on-field product better too, and get these guys ready mentally for the League. Do we know anybody like that/

That sounds great until you realize that BVG was a linebackers coach under Rex Ryan prior to his tenure at ND.

If this was going to be the case don’t you think a decision would have been made already or even some more rumblings that this might be the case. Isn’t it as simple as saying ‘do you want th job? How much? We’ll get back to you tomorrow.’

I think they have to make sure they don’t lose Elston in the process of keeping Lea. Also it seems likely that A&M is at least talking with Lea, so maybe some back-and-forth going on. And it sounds like ND was caught off guard by Elko leaving. BK’s comments before the bowl game sounded like, in his mind, this was resolved by the raise he had apparently agreed to. So they maybe needed a bit to regroup.
If going internal though, agreed they should wrap it up soon.

is elko putting together a defensive staff from scratch at TAMU?

From what I've heard, he's likely bringing a GA with him from ND. Also, if Lea doesn't get the DC job here, people expect him to follow Elko but he's been telling people behind the scenes he "wants to stay" at ND.

No one really has much of a clue right now what's going to go down with the DC search, but I think we'll have some scuttlebutt by Friday.

Two things worth the read if you have time.

1) How the new tax law impacts coaches salaries. Interesting to think through how this will work. In many cases, it's going to either put a ceiling at $1m in compensation (non P5 schools) or put more emphasis on who pays head coaches and how. What this doesn't address, is.....

https://athleticdirectoru.com/articles/how-the-new-excise-tax-impacts-coach-compensation/

2) Assistant pay pool versus HC pay pool. Both are rising / accelerating and the numbers in here are interesting. Note that the SEC assistant pool is, on average, 25% higher than both the ACC & B10 & 35% bigger than the B12 & P12. Obviously with the new contracts being signed in the SEC, this will only get larger. However, when you start to factor in the new tax, especially on assistants making over $1m, it will be interesting to see if we start to see a divergence between HC growth rates and assistant pool growth rates.

What else is interesting is the pay disparity between group of 5 HC's and the average assistant in P5. HC in G5 - $0.8m in 2017, with 17% growth since 2013. This growth rate is much slower than what is occurring in P5 assistant pools, which means that the higher price assistants are going to be priced out of jobs that would have been considered "stepping stone" jobs 10 years ago. As these high priced coordinators transition into P5 HC jobs, their higher compensation will likely create higher expectations and less patience (with lack of experience). Increased churn is something we should get used to.

Here is the data - Conference, 2017 Ave HC salary, % increase since 2013, assistant pool salary, % increase from 2013.

ACC - HC $4.0m, 54% - assistant - $3.6m, 33%
B10 - HC $3.7m, 54% - assistant - $3.6m, 50%
B12 - HC $3.2m, 3% - assistant - $3.3m, 18%
P12 - HC $3.4m, 55% - assistant - $3.3m, 46%
SEC - HC $4.6m, 44% - assistant - $4.5m, 45% (Bama assistant pool was $6m in 2017)
