Draft Williams, Walker or trade back. I don't get it
Hey, thanks for at least suggesting another scenario.

Johnson gets a big target TE like what he had in Detroit with LaPorta. Jeanty and the tackles were gone by 10. They're going offense and got the guy who is no worse than the second best tight end in the draft, if not first.

They have the 39 and 41 picks to potentially snag an RB or Edge guy. Five OT were taken in the first round.

I was surprised by the pick, but I don't hate it. Fully expected everyone would as soon as it happened, and here we are, as usual.

I just don't get it with Kmet on the roster and locked up. But in the grand scheme of things it's a weak draft class and there were worst options. It also showcases the work the front office has put in during the off season.

I'm just confused as to what is the perception that Loveland does better than Warren.

I get that they wanted another TE with Johnson's preference of two TE. I still don't think there was concern he was going to be gone if they dropped back. Perhaps no trade partners.

I would have loved for them to snag the OSU or Oregon OT later in the first with adding some draft capital.

Really hoping they get Henderson with one of the early 2's and then PBA with the other. I like the edge from BC.

They could potentially trade him and clear $6.8M in salary.

Taking Hampton, Conerly or Simmons at 10 would have been far more of a reach than Loveland or Warren. They have to build an offense around Maybelline the Mom Hugger.

What they do with 39, 41 and 72 could bring the Loveland pick into a different focus.

Versatility, athleticism, route running, bigger matchup problem in the passing game.

Other than that?

Loveland is the Y-TE Johnson wants. Warren is stronger and a better blocker right now. Loveland turned 21 two weeks ago and can be put on an NFL weight program that gets him to the point Warren is already at in that respect. Loveland doesn't have to be 245 lbs forever and probably won't be.

The dude is a matchup problem, can lineup just about anywhere and hardly ever drops anything. He's super young, too.

Loveland and Warren each are great fits for what their HC/OC are looking for in the TE position. Other guys have already commented about what Johnson sees in Loveland and for the Colts, they really need a TE that is a great blocker and sure-handed target. They don’t ask their TEs to be as much of a vertical threat. Warren is much more of a Dallas Goedert/Zach Ertz type which that Eagles coaching tree seems to prefer.

Loveland is a Kmet replacement, which hurts to say as a fan of his. Even if they don't trade him in the coming months, there's an out in his contract in 2026.

You just described Warren other then maybe the super young part.
But in typical Bears fashion, we have to wait and hope to develop a guy rather taking the guy ready to go day 1.

Warren is not nearly as fluid as Loveland. He’ll be a fine NFL TE but I don’t think he has the chance to be a difference maker, like Loveland.

Correct.

I give Warren a lot of credit for last season. PSU had no WR and you knew he was getting the ball. He caught over 100 passes and had a crazy breakout season.

I guess if people want to immediately run to the negative worst case scenario that's their right considering this franchise hasn't really given us much equity to trust them to this point. It isn't the answer to everyone's prayers nor is it a catastrophe drafting this guy.

Whatever, though.

I'm just jaded by my hatred of Michigan and an underwhelming draft class

Exactly and Ben Johnson saw a similar scenario play out a couple years ago (Laporta vs. Mayer) - just 25 picks higher here.

Loveland is taller too (Laporta is only Jack Larsen sized). I'm not a Bears fan, but if I was getting a tight end - this would be the one I'd like.

Who did everyone want with the pick at that point?

Williams? Warren? Hampton?

When the Saints took Banks at 9, I immediately thought to myself "Now what?"

It's objectively hilarious to see the number of strays Michigan is catching with the "if Michigan had a competent QB in 24 you'd feel differently about Loveland"

Honestly I just wanted to find a trade partner and accumulate more picks. But Loveland is a super fluid athlete compared to most TEs,

10 was always somewhat of a shitty spot and it forced the bears to decide take a #1 guy at a luxury position or take a guy halfway down the board at a premium position. I would have liked Conerly, but that would have been rich at 10.

Warren if it needed to be TE, and trade/cut Kmet.
But I wanted an edge, preferably Williams

My Bears fan friends are the biggest negative nancies I've ever seen and even they don't hate the pick. I didn't really want to pick a TE, but if you are taking one, Loveland is a good choice. I would have gone Conerly at 10, but I also didn't foresee him lasting all the way to Washington either.

Yes this is why i said I wish they would have traded back but don't think they found a partner for that.

Not included, almost 20% of Warren’s catches this year were screens. Warren was a volume and screen merchant. Don’t knock Loveland because Franklin can’t recruit a WR!
