The NCAA Should Shut Down Notre Dame's Football Program

By Dave "I have no friends" Zirin

It's past time that the storied Notre Dame football squad had its program suspended. In a season of heartbreak and horror under new coach Brian Kelly, the Fighting Irish have more than earned what's known as the NCAA's dreaded "death penalty." Historically, teams have received "the death penalty" for illegal recruiting or paying players under the table. The cynics -- or perhaps the realists -- will point out that most of the programs on the college football map are dirtier than a Vegas city council meeting. Why single out Notre Dame? Simply put, those running the football program in South Bend are guilty of something worse than the payoffs and kickbacks that pepper many of the top so-called amateur teams.

First there was the death of 20-year-old team videographer Declan Sullivan in October. Amidst a hurricane, Sullivan was ordered onto a 50-foot high "scissor lift" to videotape practice. Coach Kelly was apparently still angry that the previous day's practice had to be conducted inside, and practice even in inclement weather, demands to be recorded. After the tower blew over, killing Sullivan, practice continued another 25 minutes. Sullivan's death wasn't just an accident. It was utter negligence.

As school President, the Reverend John Jenkins correctly said in an email to students, "Declan Sullivan was entrusted to our care and we failed to keep him safe."

But Reverend Jenkins also defended the man in charge saying, "Coach Kelly was hired not only because of his football expertise, but because we believed his character and values accord with the highest standards of Notre Dame. All we have seen since he came to Notre Dame, and everything we have learned in our investigation to date, have confirmed that belief."

The Sullivan story was awful enough. Now there is the emerging truth behind the September 10th suicide of first year student Elizabeth Seeberg. Seeberg overdosed on anti-depressants ten days after telling friends and campus police that a University of Notre Dame football player had sexually assaulted her.

After the alleged attack on August 31st, Seeberg wrote an account of what took place, was treated at a local hospital, and gave DNA samples to the authorities. There is no evidence that the case was taken seriously and the accused player who has been neither charged nor cleared, remained on the team. Seeberg, according to reports, became fearful in the days following her statement to police that she would be outed as someone hurting the team. She made a point of wearing her Fighting Irish gear around campus and getting fake ND tattoos on her face, all the better to blend in. It all proved to be too much for her and the 19 year old who had dreams of becoming a nurse, took her own life. She was found in her dorm room by rape crisis coordinators alarmed that she'd missed her latest session.

It's a horrible story that shines light on something that occurs on far too many campuses, where sexual assault is part of the culture of entitlement conjoined with big time men's college athletics. But even worse was the response by the supposed adults in charge. Less than a month after the death of Declan Sullivan, Coach Brian Kelly, the guy with all that "character" remember, was asked by reporters about Seeberg's suicide. Coach Kelly repeatedly deflected the question. When the fourth reporter from the Tribune company asked Coach Kelly, he smirked, '"I didn't know you guys could afford all those guys," referencing the financial foibles at the paper.

This is the man who, according to Rev. Jenkins, represents the "highest values" of Notre Dame. He's the sort of man who brings his team out to practice in a hurricane and doesn't pause when a 50-foot tower falls to the ground. He's the sort of man who turns his back on a sexual assault involving one of his players and can't bring himself to show empathy for a 19 year old woman's suicide. This is a program that has officially gone off the rails and it clearly goes well beyond Coach Kelly. If these are the "highest values" of Notre Dame and if the NCAA gave a damn about the lives of the young people in their charge, they would take this program of Rockne, Hornung, and Montana, and shut it down. If the NCAA doesn't have the guts to do it, Rev. Jenkins should do it for them: take a year off, reassess your mission, and try to understand why life on that campus has become so terribly cheap.

I am still trying to figure out when there was ever a hurricane in Indiana. This has to be one of the worst pieces of journalism ever.

From what I know, those who videotape practices are working for the football team. It is voluntarily, no money or class credit involved. He was not ordered, it was something he wanted to do for the football team. Guy needs to get his **** straight.

This guy simply hates ND. Hell he is probably a bitter USC fan upset over the loss. This guy doesn't share the whole story because he doesn't know anything that is going on and neither do we in terms of investigations, etc..., etc... I love how this guy paints a one-sided obviously biased picture of the situation up in South Bend. He is just a hater and nothing more than that. F*&# him!

That is the type of stuff that goes on in our Country these days w/ no backlash, it is sad and ridiculous. The guy needs his nose bent. In the good ol days, if you said something about another man, you better have proof, or you got your *** whipped, literally, or in court.....Sorry, this has spun me off course, but it's everywhere, my dad (60 years old) my brother and I almost got in a fight at the KU/MU game this weekend b/c my father asked a young man in front of him to please sit down (no one else was standing-he was just being a dumb drunk ***), his response? To give my dad the finger and tell him I will "kick your *** old man". He didn't realize my Dad is an avid weight lifter and has been in education for 30+ years and doesn't take disrepect off a little punk too lightly, and that my brother and I don't take kindly to some punk bitch tellin our old man to f-himself, security saved this guy and his friend by escorting them out of the stadium....My point of the story is, it is an example, as is this article, of how people have lost respect for each other and will run off at the mouth, there should be consequences.....Sorry, end meathead rant.

Florida?? They are the angels of College football. I mean..., look how perfect they are. I would imagine the writer would really have to dig to find any kind of dirt on that clean program.

I guess that this is one of the prices that we have to pay for living in the Great American Experiment, but sometimes my dark side surfaces. In the "old days" in these West Virginia hills, if someone assed you, you "settled it" in the park or the parking lot. Preferably you didn't actually kill the as*hole but he remembered the feedback. ... forgive me Lord...shouldn't be writing like this to all these young overly-testosteroned fellows. They're wild enough as it is.

Wow. What a piece of garbage and about 6 minutes of my life I'll never get back. You know what I think? I think that people who hate ND are just chomping at the bit for us to go 0-12 and watch our program implode, and now that we have a real coach at the helm, and not a co-ordinator turned coach, or a golf pro leading us, we're actually heading in the right direction.

It is a travesty that these so called "journalists" capitalize on the death's of two students, because in reality, that is all they are doing. Jim Tressel had practice indoors 4 hours away the day after the winds moved out of this area, and suddenly ND is guilty of murder.

What they don't report on is the unity of these kids and everyone in the Notre Dame family and how they grieved Declan Sullivan. I can walk out of my office right now and see the Golden Dome, I know that there were at least 1000 people outside the Bascillica, and I know at least 1000 inside for his memorial. Journalists need to let the authorities do their jobs. There's already been a few retractions in the south bend tribune for the sloppy reporting they did on the St. Mary's students death. Everyone is so quick to want ND to hang, but think about what type of University we'd be if we had gotten the all star dream coach Urban Liar. It is utterly disgusting to make a mockery of these student's deaths. Let them rest in peace!

This was posted on "The Nation" yesterday. I actually responded in the comments section. I know I shouldn't have but I was so pissed I just had to.

Here's the problem. The Chicago Tribune writes a slanted story which the whole premise was that ND didn't handle the case right because they didn't inform the county about the assault after the suicide. But of course that premise was proven false.

So then last week other "journalist" write slanted stories using the Tribune as their source and slant the information even more with their own opinions.

Then this week this idiot writes a story quoting the journalist who were quoting the Tribune. So basically you have 3rd hand information based on a story that's whole premise in the first place has been proven false????? This is the TMZ world we live in.

So what happens next week? Some hack quotes this guy and skewers the info even more that student's are dropping like flies and the football team and Kelly are covering it up in some huge conspiracy. Just a total joke.
